When the bad guy catches you sneaking in his camp the way he grabs and talks to Lara does make it seem like it’s going in that direction.

Then you escape and find an assault rifle.

I’m going off memory here since this was 5 years ago or something.

The whole question came up when the game trailer was released. There’s a scene with a beaten and bloody Lara strung up that oozed sexual violence in the way it was framed. The producer of the game claimed that the threat of rape was real for the interrogation scene in response to queries about the trailer.

The game developers and publishers called shenanigans on that statement pretty quickly and said “No. That’s loving not right and not what happens”. To their credit, it’s not that way when the game was released. There’s no actual implied or direct sexual threats (other than the implicit power dynamic), and Lara escapes with (again, as I remember) a knee to the balls and a double-tap to the head.

The original 2013 one that Rise is a sequel to, not Rise. The opening of that game is defenseless pre-badass Lara being chased around by super rapey mercenary goons, and if you gently caress up the QTEs you get some nasty death scenes.

e: I should note that I don't think the sequence is offensive, it's just... rough to get through for people with related trauma and, given how many people with related trauma there are, a trigger warning is fair.

There's no "implied sexual threats" in the sense that there's no threats that actually mention rape, but the way the mercs behave toward Lara is extremely similar to typical depictions of sexual violence and makes it seem like it's about to go that direction. They just end it by shooting her in the head instead of raping her.

I remember some of the environmental deaths seeming weirdly gratuitous as well. It's hard to explain but it seemed like torture porn.

Not seeing them often if you play well is irrelevent to the fact they are quite disturbing and seem to be playing off the fact of inherent sexual threat too.

I've actually been playing the 2013 TR game recently and the game does front-load a lot of Lara getting hurt in various ways, by men and nature both. It eases up quite a bit once she gets the handgun, though.

Earlier this week, I got to the part where she gets the grenade launcher and goes on an explosion-fueled rampage through the cult's village, and it was pretty cathartic after all the scenes of dudes being creepy and abusive to her. "Oh poo poo, it's the Outsider! She's got a loving grenade launcher!"
