If anyone is looking for some new melodic/symphonic power/prog metal ala Symphony X the new Borealis album is out on March 23rd and this is the first single:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqlqxJaEzhM

This dude has some loving pipes ( very Russell Allen ) and the riffs are super catchy. The chorus is a bit poppy maybe but the song gets very proggy in chunks around the solo which is fairly par for the course for these guys.

The highlight is this guys vocals though, gently caress, I'm singing along here in very poor initiation and wish I could sing like this.

I don't know who mixed this, but the constant THUDATHUDATHUDATHUDATHUDATHUDATHUDATHUDATHUDATHUDA sixteenth notes on the double bass ruins an otherwise decent song.

This may be the hottest take I'll come up with all year, but Nu Metal was better than the Post Grunge and Metalcore that took it's place (I remember Killswitch Engage doing a photoshoot with them standing around a grave marked "Nu Metal"), just because it actually produced a few really good pop albums and a handful of actually fun, if dumb, songs. Obviously at least 95% of it was still really terrible.

That opinion could also be entirely down to my age though.

eh, when i talk about metalcore i talk about like, burnt by the sun, coalesce, botch, deadguy or integrity. i dunno what to call that killswitch engage poo poo, isn't it just mallcore? that post grunge poo poo was terrible, but thankly it seemed to pass europe pretty much. i mean we did see puddle of mudd on MTV, but it was never popular here, just a curiosity.

that said, i was into the first korn & limp bizkit albums when they came out mostly because i was also into sepultura's roots that sounded kinda similar. it passed pretty fast, i think the third nu metal album i bought was the first slipknot and by the time iowa had come out, i was knee deep in noise rock, sludge metal, grindcore and death metal and that was the end of my nu metal phase.

If I search metalcore, google suggests KSE, Bring Me the Horizon and August Burns Red but I don't know if google is a good source. It's not really a genre I know much about so just read mallcore for metalcore if that makes me post better.

e: lol, scrolling down slightly, the other two suggestions are As I Lay Dying and Metallica.

Dyna Soar

i think that stuff is like, göteborg style melodeath with even more melody while the stuff i'm walking about (which precedes killswitch & co) was also called metalcore and combined hardcore punk with slayer & a lot of dissonance.

to clarify i guess they could be called relapse metal & mallcore instead of metalcore, hah

Genres can be broad. Melodic At the Gates ripoff metalcore and 90s stuff that really emphasizes the hardcore part are both under the same umbrella. It's not like mallcore is a real classification.

sure, i just never really followed that branch of metalcore. it's just curious how meaningless the term has become while still staying in use when the trend seems to be towards microgenres instead of broad umbrellas like that.

that's what i think of when i think of metalcore, but i was also a teenager when all of those bands were hitting their stride. converge and integrity are the only bands from that era still making new music, anyway.

coincidentally i stopped listening to metalcore for the most part right around that point when bands like KSE and Lamb of God started getting big

I remember kind of liking KSE's Alive or Just Breathing when I first heard it, then listening to At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul for the first time a week or so later by pure coincidence and being amazed at how much KSE had ripped off their riffs.

hah, i don't even want to know how it's used now. i love poo poo like quicksand or lungfish or drive like jehu. same with emo, rites of spring and sunny day real estate were really good bands but then at some point emo turned into mallcore.

Hardcore in general seems to have a problem keeping it's genres on track, Emotional Hardcore going from Jawbreaker to Taking Back Sunday to "anything vaguely whiny that scene kids listen to" being another example.

imo it's pretty safe to think that if a band describes their music as (prefix) hardcore, they're not probably not hardcore.

You can at least draw a straight line from SDRE to mall emo. But Fugazi to like...Pierce the Veil(?) is labyrinthine.
