in addition to what the others said, the numbers i'm talking about are specifically for margin positions. meaning people borrowed money from others and used those to open their short/long positions, and they can get margin called if their position is losing too much (because the lender wants their money back). that means their positions are liquidated at current market price. if a long gets liquidated, all the BTC they hold is sold at market. if a short gets liquidated, they are forced to buy at market.

right now, with shorts and longs both very high and rising, we'll eventually see one side get pushed so far that those positions start to close or get liquidated. for instance, if the price keeps dropping, all these new long positions will begin to close, meaning more BTC are dumped. this forces even more longs to close/liquidate, which drops the price further, and forcing more longs to close, etc.

the same can happen to shorts, but since they have to buy to close, the price will shoot up very quickly.

anyway the bottom line is that margin shorts and longs are both very high right now and bitcoin is extremely volatile, so i think the likelihood that one of these sides will get annihilated is pretty high
