The allies just sunk a hospital ship.

Interestingly, Hikawa Maru was one of the only Japanese passenger liners to actually survive the war (by virtue of being a hospital ship) and is currently a museum.

Hi. We're just here to tell you you've gotten to close to Rabaul.

Down goes a lightning.

Look at all those task forces. It's a target rich environment! Shame this is the only strike my carriers launch!

We see off another carrier strike force.

Grumble grumble stupid carriers.

I still get my kills though!

Raider force out of torpedoes?

Can we name the raider group TF Katori? Just because she's laying on a heap of allied ships and dead marines at the ocean bottom doesn't mean she should be forgotten.

Those task forces are a conga line straight into the waiting guns of the cruiser raiders. I hope they don't run out of ammo.

At this point the Mogami would probably be better off with the *pre retrofit* gun layout.

KILL THE QUEEN!

That's going to leave a mark.

That's more like it.

The captain gets greedy and gets punished for it.

We lose a lot of planes going after her.

A destroyer is taken out.

We see more fighting over Rabaul.

That's not a cruise ship is it.

We see a major carrier strike.

We march closer to Operation Charnel House.

Another bloody day in the skies, with little to show for it.

We lose another sub.

Raid your way to victory!

The lads bring it once more.

Their escorts suffer today though.

The carriers get some planes in the air.

They get a kill.

But the losses are heavy!

Where were your escorts?

The list of losses in the bottom corner grows.

A tanker kills is always nice.

The carriers come under attack that afternoon.

Our losses continue to mount.

Lesson learned, this is a no-go area for my planes.

We get the occasional hit in though!

Today is going to take a long time to recover from, if I even can in pilots.

This is a fleet carrier strike.

The last time I went west from Rabul, it was ok, it seems they have massively beefed up their air cover in the last few weeks!
It should be said, even after losing a hundred planes today, I still gained 105 points on the allies.

There might be another reason for that though.

The way pilots over-report kills, that's going to be claimed as 4 or 5 hundred kills. PACCOM is breaking out the champagne and expecting the war to end in months.

It's probably about time to pull the fleet back to Truk. Sooner or later those bombers are gonna get lucky, and I gotta imagine it's getting harder and harder to get fuel through the encirclement.

Can't the Queen do like half* the map in a single turn? I feel that any attempt at engagement would end like a Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote (genius) cartoon.

*obvious hyperbole. How many hexes can she actually make make in a turn and (followup question) how many hexes are some relevant distances between landmarks?
(e.g. West Coast to Pearl Harbour is x hexes, Pearl to Rabaoul is Y etc)

Yeah, the Queen hid from my raids and can do 28 knots. She'll most likley be safe before the next air phase comes around. there are 3 movement phases or so.

It would have been perfect. I'm a little upset.

Unlikely, its more probable that it was one of the attacks that don't get a combat report, sometimes happens with subs, often times happens to plane recon.

Was there ever a situation like this in the actual WWII where you've got fleet carrier groups, cruiser/destroyer groups, subs attacking convoys, long range bombers, and ground-based aircraft from major bases just going all out on anything they can see within a few hundred kilometers of each other?
