I'm not going to weigh in on the paper itself because I don't care, but FWIW this is actually more and more common nowadays. The academic journal process is so goddamn slow and stupid that it's increasingly common to submit your first draft to a preprint server before submitting it to a journal, and to invite commentary and dissemination of results at that time. It's not ideal, but people do it because (1) it establishes priority for results and (2) it helps the field progress more quickly.

It does mean that results need to be treated with a bit of extra skepticism, but it doesn't mean that there's some sort of nefarious purpose or intent to deceive going on. It's actually a pretty good thing for science, all told.

Self-quoting necromancy but I figured I'd post this here in case anyone's interested: A new study just came out comparing articles that appear on preprint servers to those same articles after they go through peer review and appear in a scientific journal. The authors find that very little typically changes between preprint and post-peer-review versions. The point they're actually making is that for-profit publishers add little to the process, but it's relevant to the discussion we were having as well about the reliability of preprints.

Okay, that's actually a very good point. From a quick skim it seems like they're only focused on papers that made it through to (mostly Elsevier) journals, which leaves out any papers that were just such poo poo that they didn't get published at all. Do you actually have numbers for how many preprints don't make it through? That'd be interesting to see. If it really is a super high proportion, that plus this article would kind of imply that peer review functions more as a sort of a gatekeeper than a constructive process, which is interesting. Basically "don't change much" or "gently caress off entirely".
