Trig Discipline posted:I'm not going to weigh in on the paper itself because I don't care, but FWIW this is actually more and more common nowadays. The academic journal process is so goddamn slow and stupid that it's increasingly common to submit your first draft to a preprint server before submitting it to a journal, and to invite commentary and dissemination of results at that time. It's not ideal, but people do it because (1) it establishes priority for results and (2) it helps the field progress more quickly. Self-quoting necromancy but I figured I'd post this here in case anyone's interested: A new study just came out comparing articles that appear on preprint servers to those same articles after they go through peer review and appear in a scientific journal. The authors find that very little typically changes between preprint and post-peer-review versions. The point they're actually making is that for-profit publishers add little to the process, but it's relevant to the discussion we were having as well about the reliability of preprints.

Okay, that's actually a very good point. From a quick skim it seems like they're only focused on papers that made it through to (mostly Elsevier) journals, which leaves out any papers that were just such poo poo that they didn't get published at all. Do you actually have numbers for how many preprints don't make it through? That'd be interesting to see. If it really is a super high proportion, that plus this article would kind of imply that peer review functions more as a sort of a gatekeeper than a constructive process, which is interesting. Basically "don't change much" or "gently caress off entirely".

There's no real threshold for submitting a preprint other than "has a university affiliation" or "sponsored by someone who has a university affiliation", as far as I know, depending on the repository.

I'm not sure it's safe to assume that. I don't think most people would put something on preprint servers that they didn't have some confidence in, because the whole point is supposedly to invite public critique from your colleagues. Could be wrong, but I'd like to see actual numbers.

Oh hey, here's bioRxiv's info:quote:Although 30% of all papers currently in bioRxiv have been published, at any one time many are still in journal review, so the overall percentage proportion of preprints that are eventually published is much higher. Avenging_Mikon posted:So about 41 out of every 100 are never published, if we take their "over 50% are published" to its maximum graceful value (59%). That's over fifty percent published within a year of being submitted to biorXiv, and is almost certainly an underestimate of how many actually get published eventually. Some papers get submitted multiple times before they get published, and peer review/revisions for even a single journal can take a year easily. I have no idea how long the tail of the time-to-publication distribution is, but I've had poo poo that's knocked around at the same journal for almost two years with minimal changes (thanks, Ecography!). That being the case, all you can really say from that figure is "the proportion that eventually get published in a peer reviewed journal is somewhere between 50 and 100 percent, and we won't know the real number for years". Avenging_Mikon posted:Further, I actually don't recall, but was the paper we were discussing at the start even sent to prepublish? Because it was just a tweet going "Hey look at my research!" I honestly can't recall either, but people were hating on preprints like those were something that only losers do with unpublishable research, and I was just pointing out that that's wrong for a number of reasons. I don't know about the rest of those who have Facebook, but the number of "B-b-b-but what about bullying?" posts from some of my friends have been amping up a lot since the walkout protests yesterday. It's infuriating, but in a sense I'm glad because it seems that NRA types are making GBS threads their pants. These protests might actually break through the inertia and cynicism and effect real change. Much harder to ignore and discredit teens who actually lived through a school shooting.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of them as well, but it's almost more reductive and insulting than "stop bullying". It's more to the tune of "Instead of asking that guns be banned, maybe take pity on that nerd and talk to them for once, because that's literally the only thing that leads to school shootings." It's coming from the exact people that you would expect it to, ie: People who would've bullied these nerds into the ground back in their day, but view themselves as perfect angels in adulthood.
