Interesting that comes up since GameSpot recently deleted and apologised for a tweet that called the old Lara design 'over-sexualised' and implied she wasn't an icon before her reboot redesign, after a feminist complained it's slut-shaming and enforcing patriarchal modesty norms.

The older Tomb Raider games definitely marketed themselves on sex appeal. Believe it or not those pointy triangular boobs were provocative back in the day and Eidos certainly played into Lara's image to move units, even if they gradually toned it down over the years. That isn't to say TR2013 doesn't have its own share of problems in the kind of torture porny way Lara is introduced. It's that whole Whedonesque angle of taking some waifish girl in peril, mercilessly beating her down for an hour, then saying it's feminist as long as she comes out of it beating up the bad guy. Fortunately TR2013 doesn't totally veer in that direction and becomes more of an action romp by the end, but I'm curious what kind of framework this new movie is going to lead with.

Well, the poo poo can go both ways right? I work in middle-to-high school education and it turns out that kids and adults alike are often super-duper extra lovely to girls who commit the sin of developing early or growing boobs that are “too big” for their age cohort. Like, if you can name a problem in education somebody has tried to blame it on a student’s boobs. Parents will sit in a meeting straight-faced and blame their own kid’s inability to self-regulate on a classmate’s choice of shirt. Or argue against including a kid on an athletic team or in a performance on bullshit modesty or self-esteem grounds or “other kids and dads will be distracted” (a real argument often tossed around by athletic staff). Is a girl getting bullied by her peers? Harassed by strangers? Do other girls like her too much? Too little? Do boys like her too much? Too little? Grades too low compared to her classmates? Grades too high? Did she place in honors math? Regular math? Is she depressed? Is she really happy? Did she get assaulted? Welp, boobs are for Adults Only and she should’ve thought about the consequences of her choices before she put those adult boobs on in seventh grade. I tell you, in my day we had responsibility. trilobite terror fucked around with this message at 16:26 on Mar 15, 2018 |

I played Tomb Raider 2013 to completion, and I can't recall anything except for that hilarious bit where Lara's nerd crewmember goes off on his own in enemy-territory to impress Lara, gets himself fatally injured, and when she finds him he hands her what was worth dying over: a wrench.

I can get behind dress codes when it comes to the girls who are legit dressing way beyond their age, but the codes were alway bullshit when it came to girls who just happened to develop earlier than the others. Like I was nine when I went through puberty and for a while I'd get poo poo for wearing the same normal-rear end t-shirts as other girls just because I already had tits. But like a twelve year old running around in booty shorts and a crop top, I can see telling her to put something else on fwiw, even if the reasons they give usually come out loving stupid.

Dress code poo poo is always super stupid. I mean, I grew up in the golden age of hipster jeans and g-strings, going to a public school and still managed to do alright. If I didn't, it's because school is boring as poo poo and I was a teenager, and would have rather have been doing basically anything else.exquisite tea posted:She looks like a pretty dead-on representation of nu-Lara Croft from TR2013 onwards to me. Guys can wear the Bro Uniform (tank top and some Donald Glover-rear end shorts) to absolutely no complaints as long as they're not rocking the hawaiian shirt with no tee underneath thing, but that's not seen as "too mature", it's just seen as "literally not wearing a shirt". i think there should just be a "don't wear something you should only wear to the beach" rule. it doesn't blame girls for boys' "distraction", it's just like, school is not the beach. short shorts? beach. crop top? beach. button-up with no shirt? beach. really really deep-necked tank-top? beach.

Then I went to a private school and the even the socks were like $8 a pair, and you needed three types (school, sports summer, sports winter), and they all have a coloured stripe on them, so no, you can't just wear a pair of normal white socks to sport. I know private schools need to turn a profit, but drat, the uniform shop there was such a ripoff.

School uniforms need to be totally revamped. Mine didn't have one, but so many of my friends who did experienced a huge amount of sexual harassment when walking to/from school in a uniform, way more than they'd get when in casual dress. There's something very hosed about forcing 12 year old girls to wear an outfit that has become one of the top porn tropes in the country. At least give them the option of trousers.

Then again they are also the lowest quality material possible, and as soon as the kids get them they start altering them to their standards, its also kind of a relief never having to worry about what to wear every morning. Also I think the ubiquity of the uniform sort takes the steam out trying ro fetishize it.

School uniforms for public schools in my country are made in a way to look as the most uninteresting thing ever and that can be bought by anyone, anywhere . Like white shirt or polo, gray/darkblue skirt and there's always the rule that the lenght most be under the knee. SADLY, men over here will always harass you in the street no matter what you are wearing. You could be the fattest older woman wearing jeans and a huge t-shirt and some guy will whistle and say something sexual. You could be 10 and be dressed just like a kid, and some creep will stare at you like a steak (This did happen to me when I was in elementary school. Made my mother super angry). It's like they got so use to that behaviour that the moment they see anything with long hair or boobs they have to say something, stare at, make sexual advances, etc.

Yeah in case it wasn't clear, I'm not arguing that it's kids' dress codes that are the problem here, but until we as a culture move past men being loving atrocious to children those children shouldn't be forced to dress in a way that so many men sexualise. I'm sure if we give them alternatives men will just start sexualising those as well but, eh, you do what you can. I suppose my complaint here is less with the nature of school uniforms and more that kids are forced to dress that way.

When she was fourteen and in high school my wife once got pulled into the head office after class because a male teacher complained to the principal that her skirt was too short. She told the principal that the teacher probably shouldn't be looking at her like that and then she got to hear a gross little speech where the gist was that men can't be blamed for their behaviour and women had to keep this in mind when choosing what to wear. She didn't get punished because on this occasion, it was "clearly unintentional". The girls uniform at this school was a polo shirt, optional sweater, skirt and tights, so I don't think that's at all a barrier for this sort of thing. I honestly think it'd take putting them in dystopian grey overalls to stop some people fetishizing high schoolers. Anyway that's (not) my school uniform story.
