I was channel surfing with my wife and she flicked past the channel that shows WD down here for just one second that lined up exactly with that gif. I then had to explain why I burst out laughing.

I'm not sure I would give the show this much credit, but I've not noticed this myself. I'm hilariously bad at catching biblical references though so me not seeing it means absolutely nothing. Was this something like in the first season?

Well, on a strict theological basis, Purgatory is the wrong word. What I would mean is the much more pop culture Left Behind sense, where the apocalypse is a test of character for people who need to prove whether or not they're worthy:

quote:

Based on a dispensationalist interpretation of prophecies in the Biblical books of Revelation, Daniel, Isaiah and Ezekiel, Left Behind tells the story of the end times (set in the contemporary era), in which true believers in Christ have been "raptured" (taken instantly to heaven), leaving the world shattered and chaotic. As people scramble for answers, an obscure Romanian politician named Nicolae Jetty Carpathia rises to become secretary-general of the United Nations, promising to restore peace and stability to all nations. What most of the world does not realize is that Carpathia is actually the Antichrist foretold in the Bible. Coming to grips with the truth and becoming born-again Christians, airline pilot Rayford Steele, his daughter Chloe, their pastor Bruce Barnes, and young journalist Cameron "Buck" Williams begin their quest as the Tribulation Force to help save the lost and prepare for the coming Tribulation, in which God will rain down judgment on the world for seven years.

Or movies like, well, Purgatory:

quote:

Britton learns that Refuge is actually Purgatory, where the gunfighters are stranded between Heaven and Hell, hoping to hoping to find a redemptive grace that will bring them salvation as they struggle not to backslide into final damnation.

Sounds pretty familiar to Walking Dead plotlines and zombie media in general. But a lot of the characters in The Walking Dead have arcs that are curiously centered around looking for some kind of inner peace that would suggest they're "ready to go," and this gets super loving ham-handed before too long. I think the strongest sense you get of this is when Tyreese is dying.

It's a little much to give Walking Dead credit so much as recognize that it has a really muddled set of religious references throughout that don't add up to much.

The complete lack of dramaturgy and subtext is really a thing of beauty. I can't get over this last episode: Must get doctor to Hillside. Spend 30 minutes building up this God Leadeth The Blindth thing. BAM doc's dead there is no god gently caress you. Another doctor shows up and goes to live in the trailer.

I'm thinking they had 2 different writers who never meet, both coming up with different doctor subplots, and by the time someone realized this they've already shot too many episodes and need to get rid of one of them. They could've had some meaning to all that, but just said "gently caress it" and laughed all the way to the bank.

In my mind it is worse than that because the ~other doctor~ showing up in Hilltop means there is a god in TWD's universe...he's just a jerk.

Like, it could have been a relatable story about losing or keeping faith, but instead we literally watched this god come down from heaven to gently caress with Gabe Old Testament-style for 50 minutes.

As for the writing, I like to imagine a first- or second-year film student, set up on a folding chair with a mechanical typewriter on a tv-tray, banging out script pages in a field, ripping them off and throwing them over his shoulder to a PA seconds before they start shooting it.

No time to think, no time for continuity: just keep pushing forward!

Ok, yeah I understand now. I'm a big fan of that kind of storyline, and there's a British show that I absolutely loved how they handled that. I don't know if I think TWD really engages that concept. If they do it's by mistake by having an apocalyptic setting it automatically brings the ideas of being left behind, and continued existence is basically used to gauge your worthiness/unworthiness. For the continued use of characters trying to find peace, that might work better if that was "a hard choice that worked" but instead the show constantly shows people looking to stop killing as a weakness that can result in others being killed, so the show has so many mixed messages and themes that we can probably assume they have NO messages or themes by intent.

TWD I assume is still making AMC a lot of money, but continues its ratings slide as more and more people give up on it.

The synopsis for the first two episodes of FTWD s4 are out. The premier was co-wrote by Gimple and pretty much confirms it's gonna be more or less "episode 17" of TWD season 8.

However, the first two episodes have been released to critics also, and Forbes really likes it. I'm pretty sure this is the same Forbes writer who's been trashing the main show the last few years and hated the first two seasons of FTWD so that's a good sign at least. https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikka...y/#f17b3d7465c0

http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/fear-the-walking-dead/news/a852272/fear-the-walking-dead-season-4-spoilers-crossover/

quote:

Fear the Walking Dead is set to look VERY different in season four with a "new look and a new atmosphere".

Along with Morgan (Lennie James) crossing over on screen, it turns out that there has been a crossover behind the scenes as well with The Walking Dead's director of photography Michael E Satrazemis joining as a directing producer on Fear season four.

So they are giving FWTD, a show that had it's own very distinctive look and atmosphere with the Mexican and US Southwest vistas and things like MARKETTHUNDERDOME, a look that will be much more like...The Walking Dead.

:suicide:

Also, a disturbing lack of Strand in that interview. :colbert:

The show got Gimpled. It was nice to know you, Fear the Walking Dead, for the one season you weren't poo poo.

Goddamn I want to give it a chance though. Please break my expectations, Fear.

ED: I find it hilarious how much Fear improved to the point we're all defending it and concerned for it. When Season 3 started the attitude was "Let's not even make a thread for this poo poo, it's just going to get lame and dumb as gently caress anyway, let's watch to laugh at it" and 2-3 episodes in we were like "Hey, this isn't bad.." and it just went up from there.

Say what you will at least the production value on GoT is at it's absolute peak. I've seen movies that look way, way, WAY less cinematic than the last season of Game of Thrones.

It's unfortunate that while it was getting all that plastic surgery to look pretty it also got a lobotomy.

They better not try to turn her into loving Alpha because I don't think I could take the character STILL learning nothing from her "constantly loving around and betraying Rick's group never works out well for her. Also making deals with the Saviors and loving around and betraying them worked out worse."

It was supposed to be sad when Simon gunned them all down but if Rick showed up at the start of the season with his people and mowed them all down, I'd been 100% cool with it. Not just from some meta not liking them but a "these people are untrustworthy dicks that want to take slaves and feed people to art project zombies." gently caress them.

Episode was still high on the trash ratio. Butthole vision? That Dwight-Tara “let me prove I’m trustworthy” bit was telegraphed from scene 1. Swamp zombies. Teleporting zombies. No one bothering to look at the sound that literally drew them. Doctor Highlander. “Let’s all believe in God..” time. But at least plot moves forward? I donno.
