I feel like at least Sweden is more friendly than some parts of the US? In Texas you can get charged for possession. In Sweden possession is fine but it’s the dealers that get in trouble. Maybe the Texas is just highly hostile though lol

Wait, you mean you don't waste countless police hours chasing down drug users? But then how do you keep your prisons stuffed past capacity?

Logging back on, all the cool poo poo is gone.

Thanks for listening to my UO story.

I played UO for a year, maxed out all my stats on all five characters, and opened a very profitable little shop outside Vesper. It eventually became more like a job that I paid to work at instead of a game, so I sold my account for a pile of money and never played an MMO again. That's my very boring story.

All I know about UO is that Lord British was supposed to be invulnerable but still managed to be ganked by the players, and someone once held the game ransom by overloading it with slimes.

Iirc, Lord British appeared ingame to make a speach, and someone tried a fire spell just for funsies. LB forgot to set himself as invincible beforehand, and burned to death immediately in front of a bunch of horrified players.

Never touched the game but the way I understand it, instead of being programmed to be invincible, they gave British an item to create the effect. So an enterprising thief teleported next to him and picked his pocket, stealing it. The next random troll attack hit its mark.

I've lived in a windowless bunker my entire life and do all my computing via a complex series of binary taps in an infinite labyrinth of pipes, but what *I* heard was that Lord British was eight foot two with the head of a seahorse and the body of Stephen Hawking. When he accepted a flower from one of his cultists the spell that caused him to forget his true name was removed and he burned alive, frying all DSL lines and sending a lightning bolt through a young Mark Zuckerburg.

What the gently caress are you talking about? Sweden is super draconian about weed.

Cops will go into a trance concert and round up a bunch of random people, drug test them, and prosecute the ones who piss hot for misdemeanor possession of narcotics.

Possession of weed is super super not fine, and, furthermore, most Swedes support this level of criminalization.

Sweden is largely progressive on a lot of issues, but it's strangely conservative on drug policy. It's one of those things where mentioning even being slightly in favor of less draconian regulation on soft drugs can be a political career ender.

That said society, at least among well educated people under 40 in my experience has a pretty relaxed attitude towards soft drugs.

That's mostly a heritage from the myth of the folkhem (lit. (The) Peoples home, basically a welfare state built on obedience and a general concensus among the population). The first time the phrase was used in 1928 was as an expression for a nationwide "dumbing down" and an excuse for the state to take advantage in its citizens. In oppostition to the folkhem mindset was the medborgarhem (lit. (The) citizens home).

When the phrase made a resurfacing in the 1980's its negative associations was glossed over and instead was used as a picture of an ideal society from a time now lost to us. As a part of the folkhem utopia, citizens were expected to work together as a whole for the good of all. And the state.

This leading to a harsher view on those who didn't, drug users in particular. The longing for the folkhem that never was is still a political stance in most major parties and thus the illusion of drug users as a parasitic scourge lives on, both in regulations and in opinions. But as you say, younger generations are more liberal in their views.
