Did you see the "with consent of the parents" part?? The parents could have told the school to gently caress off, but didn't. They likely approved of the punishment, and didn't want their kids to participate in the first place. That makes what these kids did even more brave.

I didn't realize corporal punishment was still legal in many states until yesterday where one of the kid's mom was talking about this on Twitter. This country is completely backwards and we deserve to be thought of by other countries the way we think of Mississippi.

RZApublican posted:Do they want a new generation of Democrats? Like, a whole lot of them? I'm having this conversation with the principal right now. The middle school kids were kettled in an auditorium, names taken, etc. After I wrote expressing my disapproval, I got a letter back about how they had word of "detractors" coming to the school, and so in the interest of children's safety they put them out of sight, out of mind. But her public e-mail pronouncement was "This is email is sent to let you know that students were peaceful and respectful this morning at Middle School. We had a small number of students who chose to walk out of class and they assembled in a safe space. Those students have returned to class and everyone is following their daily schedule." Trying to decide how many rounds I want to go over this. Claiming that they had to kettle the kids due to a safety threat to me privately, and publicly saying "a small number of students participated" while not mentioning this alleged threat to their safety is some pretty lovely double dealing.

In any case, you're right, even if it is revealed that Trump has been loving Stormy on the Oval Office desk every other day, it is unlikely to bring him down on its own. But it would result in tremendous embarrassment for pretty much everyone around him, and the ship would sink with him at the helm.

I'd just thought that since the state was always sort of reasonable even when it was swing-y and not mostly blue that they wouldn't have laws that allowed for corporal punishment. Hopefully after this midterm poo poo like this will start to go away for good, even though I won't be around to enjoy the wave against Rs this year and in '20. I was paddled a couple times in Mississippi. Once in the first grade when I didn't come in from recess promptly enough. I was six years old. Again, in high school, for 'defiantly playing chess.' I was fourteen. It was just a light tap, followed by the principal slapping the sole of his shoe hard to make it sound worse than it was, but it happened. This all was mid '80s/mid '90s
