If you didn't laugh at "Stigfoot", and the way they mimicked the old footage of bigfoot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MICxS6kEzUA you're dead inside.

Eh, it was worth a chuckle, but everything about that segment was incoherent.

I binged though the first two episodes last night and was happy my TiVo has a quick mode to run things 1.3x normal speed. I'm sorry, the team has zero chemistry. I was hoping some would develop by now, but it's not there so there's no joy in them screwing around.

There were so many moments of the Grand Tour that, while scripted, got honest reactions out of everyone. That's lacking here.

To take an example from Grand Tour's last episode, James soaking himself with his tank.

That was obviously scripted as they put that design flaw in there on purpose. But here's the difference.

Grand Tour Script: James is going to get soaked by his car while you guys watch on.

They watch on and have an honest break down laughing moment that's infectious with the audience.

Top Gear Script: Matt Lablanc is going to get soaked. Rory laugh while Chris make a snide comment about how goofy Matt looks now. Got the shot? Ok, let's move on.

Think of how much more fun the figure 8 chain racing would have been with James May or Richard Hammond in the rear car.

The first episode was pretty meh (I am struggling to remember what happened, and I watched it only 2 days ago), but the second episode was a decent enough. A lot of it still feels forced and scripted, especially LeBlanc. It feels super awkward whenever they congratulate each other and shake hands.

That night we performed the rite and opened the gate.
Halfway through, I went to fix us both a coke float.
By the time I got back, he'd gone insane.
Plus, he'd left the gate open and there was evil everywhere.

The problem with nue new top gear is that it wasn't just the presenters that left it was the production company and all the crew. That and JC is pretty well known for working the script over and over until it is tight which is a major issue with the new show. If you go back to the first few series of new top gear even when they had not been working together for years yet there was still a lot of good scripting to make it feel tight.

Even on just an old 1080p TV The Grand Tour looks better than Top Gear. Just... all of it.

I don't dislike the newest TG as much as some folks here, but even at its best it's still very disjointed. Sabine being a maniac in figure 8 racing gave me a laugh. LeBlanc has the odd random joke that lands. Harris is bitchy and Reid is just sort of happy to be there. And that's kind of it.

Yeah, actual video quality is just better for the Grand Tour. Honestly, watching Top Gear on BBC-A at 1080i compressed to hell in FIOS with all the crappy network bugs, hastag overlays, and other programming advertising makes it seem like an amateur production compared to clean 4k HDR without all the extra in screen crap.

I don't know what you guys watched I found it pretty good and laughed several times. Not as good as this season of GT, but better than most episodes of the last. Sure, still too many parts scripted feeling (I have no issue with being scripted, but don't make it stiffly obvious), but it was the same with the last few seasons of Hammond, Clarkson and May, only they also looked pretty tired of it all to boot. Overall very happy with where GT and TG are at the moment, GT a bit more than TG though.

It's a tough act to follow Grand Tour immediately after it airs. If so-called Top Gear had started in like June it might come off a bit better.

This is a good point, going from 4K TGT S2 that had most of the bad S1 bits excised, to newest Top Gear that looks objectively worse and is still getting its poo poo together, was maybe not a great idea.

Also BBC America started running a "best of the last Top Gear" thing before starting the new season to boot.

That said it is AMAZING how terrible Evans was. Has he literally been dissolved in a vat of acid yet? Because he should have been.

I was sad there was no dekatora trucks in Rory's bit... they missed a trick there. Also wandered passed that green/gold Kenmeri Skyline at the start which has a rotary in it. :argh:

The exclusion zone stuff was a bit overwrought considering that risk analysis since had shown the 160,000 residents should have never been evacuated.

I think the Japanese like to play it safe.

Also, why are they still excluding Rory from the challenges?

We're on season 3 right? Rory has been the sideshow from the beginning, which I think is them trying to break from the old series trend of having the 3 of them all at once.

Ha, if they liked to play it safe, then the whole accident wouldn't have happened.

I'm mostly referring to them dressing up in the white clean-suits with dubbed in geiger counter noises.

If you live within 10 miles downwind of a coal plant, you probably live in a more radioactive environment.

More people in that area died from the evacuation (1,600 from stress induced medical complications) than from the actual tsunami.

As far as the rest of the episode goes, it was a lot more enjoyable than the first two. I can't help but think though that Clarkson and Co. would have gotten roasted over that Lexus vs Honda segment for leaning a bit too far into Japanese stereotypes.

I was impressed by how much poo poo got missed out in this episode. I think most of us in this forum could've put together a better episode in terms of things to see and do. The car auction and Rory's piece were the highlights. The 'touge' and drift bits were garbage.

There was so much promise but it fell short. It was fun but could've been better. I wish they'd spent more time there.

It started out with Matt and the two Chrises being the "main" characters. Sabine and Eddie would show up sometimes to do whatever. Then Rory was the normal bloke who would talk about normal cars. So it was ok for him to never get to join in the challenges. But now he's one of the three characters left, he really should get to join the other two.

Rory had the best parts of the episode although I would have liked if they mentioned cool kei cars like the s660 as a way of showing how even with the limitations there are still fun cars. At least that's the direction I thought it was going to go.

I do appreciate that at least they mentioned Best Motoring when they were at the cycle track.

Dude?
I'm really disappointed that they intentionally destroyed that RX-7. It was in such good shape and they did that stupid tethered drifting thing and ruined both cars. The old top gear did crazy stunts with cars too like when they had the 2 cars welded together but they did it with old crapcans, not mint condition icons.

Yeah, I get that the challenges are artificial constraints to begin with, but the show should operate within those constraints.

When those constraints are ignored, it makes the whole premise meaningless.

If reselling them back in England wasn't really the intention, why bother including it at all?

So Harrisssssssss' was damaged on the right, Matt's on the left. Are we to assume that Harris was following Matt trying to twin and Matt hosed up?

None of that damage was there at the start of the challenge. That's all from the tires. Maybe there was something wrong with those cars and they got them for cheap, but it seems super lame to destroy them. Usually for these challenges, they would get them as cheap as possible so it's not like there was anything redeemable about them. I'm guessing the auction was for show, so maybe they bought them cheap before they got there.

Did anyone else notice they were using space saver spares for the drifting?
