Death Valley really was gorgeous, and with a different view around every corner. I expected way more flatness and desert as far as the eye can see, but was misled by my preconceived notions of what a desert should look like. It really was a great way to spend a day, just being driven around, being told about all the geology and history. Most of all: getting away from the convention and the casino's after a week of crowds just washing over me. So thanks again for the tips guys!

Heading to Vegas (for the first time) in March. During my travel dates the “Downtown Grand Las Vegas” hotel looks to be the better deal in terms of price vs. amenities (looks to not be old). Has anyone stayed there? Thoughts in general? Comparable prices include The Oasis across the street and El Cortez. Going solo so would rather stay in a livelier area.

The Las Vegas Strip is where most of "Vegas" is. Downtown is fun, but you can see pretty much everything there in a day, while you can spend a week on the strip, easy. You can Uber between the strip and downtown for like, $20, but I'd just recommend staying on the strip unless you have a particular reason to be downtown. What's your budget? Are you going during the week, or weekend?

I’d want to spend no more than $550-$600, inclusive of resort fees. I think I’m traveling there the weekend of a sports tournament (mid-March) as prices seem to be much higher than compared to other weekends.

Oh wow, yeah, usually that budget would get you a pretty nice hotel, but for that weekend the rates are terrible. That weekend is like, 3-4x the normal cost. I'd recommend going any other weekend in March if that's at all possible. I don't know anything about staying at the downtown hotels. There's definitely a lot of stuff to do in that area, and there are some advantages (cheaper tables, drinks, and food) but you're gonna want to spend a lot of time on the Strip if you want the real Vegas experience.

It's an incredible time to be in Vegas unless you don't care about basketball, in which case you're paying a premium for nothing. Most other weekends you'd be able to at least get an average mid-strip hotel like Flamingo or something for your budget. But not that weekend.

I am going to Las Vegas for a few days in May- just as part of my US travels ( I'm Australian). I'm travelling by myself , I've travelled solo in Europe before with no issue. How safe is it to walk around for a woman at night? I'm not an idiot, I'm not about to wander down a dark alley with hundred dollar bills stuck to me, and I don't drink- I'm usually pretty good at reading a situation.I just need to get an idea if I can walk from my hotel to monorail/ etc at night or not.

Yeah you'll be fine. Basically everywhere that's not a dark alley is well lit, well trafficked, and well surveilled. Alternatively, Uber is really cheap.

If I wanted to take my wife and kid to Vegas for President's Day weekend (weekend after next) are most of the pools open? Is it warm-ish?

Welp, I’ve rented the nightclub at Tao for a party. It’s going to be awesome. What wasn’t awesome was seeing Hakkasan taken over by a corporate party where instead of great music and drinks there was “live karaoke” and full buffets of pretty awful food. It sucked.

What are some more good tattoo shops in Vegas? I’ve had a lot of ink done at both Voodoos, but I think the good artists have all left. I’ve also gotten a couple of pieces done at Broken Dagger. I think they’re a feeder shop for an appointment-only operation, and they are always awesome. I don’t mind paying, but I want really stand-out work, and they have to be able to make room on a couple days’ notice. I know Robert Pho owns, but he also books like ten months in advance. What’s the best $:awesomeness ratio for staying on the Strip? I am used to living in Vegas, not visiting, and this resort fee poo poo has me loving furious. I’ll be in town for 11 nights, and I’d like to keep the hotel under a couple grand. I can slum it on the Boulder Strip for part of the trip if I have to, but I wouldn’t mind living it up a bit, instead. .

Hit up Jeff Parkway he's a friend of mine and SUPER legit. As far as rooms on strip, maybe the SLS, Planet Hollywood, Mandalay has good room deals right now, or MGM Signature

I wonder if he’ll have time for me in the eleven days I’ll be there. I didn’t check the SLS. Right now, I’m just hitting up all the bulk travel sites, like Priceline, and Sidestep.

Hey thread, I'm hitting Vegas for the Labor Day weekend, taking my girlfriend there for her first time, and I need some pointers. I've been to Caesar's the last couple years for the DEFCON conference, and stayed at the Luxor as a kid years ago. I've always been "on" for work, and played it pretty conservatively when I've gone, this will be my first real vacation trip. I got us a tower room at the Bellagio with some points program, and I figure I'll be willing to blow 1600-2000 for a weekend of doing generally touristy stuff, but not going too crazy. I've heard great things about the Cirque shows, and the like; and I'm thinking of surprising her with tickets to the Britney Spears thing. I also know that it's going to be hot as balls, being the last weekend of August. Anything else? Restaurants or experiences are high on our list. I feel like having the hotel paid for opens up a lot of options for maximizing my budget.

I'd argue Absinthe is something you should seriously consider. I've seen a good number of Las Vegas shows and it's still my favorite.

I remember that a long time ago, you could get a limo from LAS to a strip hotel for like $40. This was pre-Uber/Lyft. I remember it being an insider secret of some sort. A quick google doesn't reveal any bargains. Is there a cheap way to get a nice limo from the Airport to the strip?

# ? Apr 5, 2018 20:29 |

Answering my own question here. Bell Limo offers a R/T "shared limo" service for $30. Reviews on the internet indicate that it is almost always **not** shared, but they do reserve the right for it to be shared. You have to book online or in person. I was treated to a ride alone in a black car today. Apparently it's luck of the draw, sometimes black car, sometimes stretch hummer. I asked the lady to stop at a liquor store on the way, she did, no problem. I tipped $15 when I arrived. IMHO, best, nicest, cheapest, easiest way to your strip hotel from McCarren.

Any thoughts on staying in Vegas hotels that are apart of a chain like Hilton, SPG, Marriott, etc? I’ve thought about staying at the Tropicana that’s a Hilton property. I can use or earn point buts I’d prefer to be the middle of strip, be able to and walk see the rest of the casinos.

Elara is part of Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile shops and is a Hilton Vacation Club property. Right across the street is Marriott’s Grand Chateau Vacation Club property. Both are center strip, about a 1/2 block off the Strip, and neither charges a resort fee. I have friends who are fans of Elara, and I’ve done the Grand Chateau. I’d rather be staying in the Cosmo across the strip, but Grand Chateau is pretty decent, especially the larger rooms with washer & dryers, which the Cosmo finally pulled out of all of their rooms and suites. And usually available a lot cheaper than Cosmo, even more so factoring in $39/night resort fee at Cosmo. Also I think you can earn/redeem Wyndham points at the Caesars Entertainment properties.
