From the moment it started you could tell Bitcoin was going to be garbage and it keeps proving itself right. I’m just surprised it’s lasted as long as it has.

A guy on the last page mentioned how that power could have gone into protein folding or SETI research -- that's because before bitcoin, that's exactly what people were doing with their spare processor cycles. Folding@Home and SETI@Home are research projects that distribute what is essentially mining software, except instead of just having your PC do worthless calculations, they're using it to simulate how biological proteins fold themselves, which can actually help find cures to real world diseases, or to analyse the enormous amount of interstellar transmissions that are picked up in search of intelligence. You can just download the software, fire it up, and calculate useful data in the background while your PC is under light load. I doubt people would have been building 5 GPU mining rigs for protein folding, but it's really depressing when you think about the amount of computing going into blockchains that could be put directly to actual real world use.
Yeah I've had WCG projects running for years now. Though I think they've been pretty slow adopting GPU calculations.

So Block went ahead and followed up a video clip with a deadpan "Cool" again, but this time it was in Russian. (I assume. He could have been saying something else in Russian, saying "cool" in some other vaguely Slavic-sounding language, saying something else in a Slavic-sounding language, saying "cool" in a totally made-up language, or just saying gibberish in that made-up language.)

I almost fell over laughing at that song. It doesn't help that while "Vova" may be Putin's nickname, it sounds a lot like the English word for a part of a lady's womany bits.

It's still amazing that a "currency" (fake commodity) where engaging in literal ponzi schemes without any attempt at obfuscating that fact whatsoever whose only legitimate purchasing power is internet drugs and illegal porn.

I was going somewhere with that but honestly buttcoin still being a thing just makes absolutely no sense any way you put it.

The most important thing most of these people care about Bitcoin purchasing is actual real human currency after the value's increased. Very few people are actual true believers in the concept, although they may give it some lip service if they're invested enough that they have to start believing.

People go kinda feral at the prospect of get rich quick schemes. If all you have to do is lay some money down and get lucky, it's all the adrenaline and sunk cost fallacy of gambling.

It really is a sweet book, too. It has a good message and the only way you could possibly find the content of the book political is if you’re a giant raving prick like Mike Pence that thinks “it’s okay to be different” and “it’s okay to be gay” are political messages.

If Pence weren’t a homophobe, he’d have put out a statement saying “we welcome this book being released alongside our own, with its positive message of tolerance, and we encourage people to buy both, since proceeds from both are being donated to charity.” But he’s not saying that, because he’s a giant fuckwitted homophobe.

It's possible the daughter Charlotte runs the account and doesn't really care about or even is personally against her father's homophobia, so she's happy about John Oliver's book; though it would imply she's not actively discussing it with her father or trying to change his mind despite the things he's said and done. I'm assuming the proceeds of the Pence book are partially being donated to that conversion therapy crowd John mentioned Pence supported too. I'm probably going to buy the audiobook later today, but I don't want to buy the Kindle edition since no-one I know has a Kindle besides myself and I'd rather give the book to my sister since she has a 2 year old and another kid on the way. That said, if it doesn't start being sold on Amazon outside the US in the next short while I'll probably just buy the Kindle version as a or give a straight donation. I wonder would there be a point asking about it on Twitter or has someone done so already?

That's quite an assumption. I can't find anything that supports that. The BBC says "Proceeds of Pence's book will be donated to Tracy's Kids, an art therapy program, and A21, a charity which aims to end sex trafficking."

Oliver's book seems like a legitimately nice way to communicate a difficult issue to children, and Pence is a tremendous loathsome rear end in a top hat, but whenever John Oliver was talking about trying to outsell the other book mainly to piss off Mike Pence... I wasn't quite on board. Seems like the daughter would probably be more invested in the book than her father.

As a book it seems lovely, as an attack it seems poorly targeted.
