retraining is a good idea, but teaching middle-aged coal miners how to program is idiotic. there are other fast-growing jobs in the trades that would come a million times more naturally to someone used to heavy machinery. alternately, nursing and related medical jobs take 1-2 years of training, pay very well, and are in high demand thanks to all the demented old ppl. but unlike mythical programmer jobs, these jobs might require leaving your lovely coal factory town and moving someplace better. gov't should also provide help with that aspect if there's demonstrated commitment from the worker. either way there's also plenty of precedence for the idea that coal miners might be too dumb 2005 op-ed posted:There has been fierce competition among states hoping to attract a new Toyota assembly plant.
