Dadbod Apocalypse posted:ah yes...the ol' When Was In Flames Good? twice yearly discussion is back. Has it been six months already? C'mon everybody and weigh in with your opinion on IN FLAMES! The thing is that, I still really like both the Folksy-rear end Melodeath and Nu-Metal sides on In Flames. Hell, there were songs off of A Sense of Purpose that I really liked. It's just the... buttrock? dadrock? Whatever it is that the mixing/mastering they've started using since at least ASOP but that came in full with Sounds of a Playground Fading that enables their newest sound which comes off akin to what bands like Shinedown or Nickelback would do. That's my beef with In Flames.

Like a lot of genres, most of melodeath's gems are decades old at this point. Going through my melodeath ratings I'm only seeing one album in the last 2-3 years that I would consider an amazing release for the genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcA6PloeFCE Basically American s/t era Wintersun

Now I just want a new Amon Amarth album real bad. I didn’t follow them for a long break but I listen to Jomsviking all the time. I didn’t expect to like the super polished production as much as I do but it works well with the direction they’ve slowly going in.

Most of the records in between have some memorable songs, but Jomsviking is just... perfect. Even the narrative of the whole album, relatively simple as it is, works.

I interviewed In Flames and Nevermore years ago and the entierty of the In FLames interview consisted of a spirited debate around Sweden beating Canada in the Olympics for the gold medal and why Peter Forsberg was better than Wayne Gretzky. We also spoke italian to the drummer at the time who spoke a fluent Italian. That's my In Flames story.

In Flames was part of my first metal show ever (Gigantour 2008) and it felt like I was watching Evanescence with harsh vocals outside of the couple of old tracks they played (which weren’t that much better)

Can someone here explain what is it about Converge that makes people think they're inventive? Like, I can appreciate that Kurt Ballou's production gives the band a certain edge / asphyxiating atmosphere (and I actually think that the work he does for other bands' records is fairly cool), but am I the only one thinking that they're basically not all that different from, say, The Dillinger Escape Plan as far as having a very samey body of work sprinkled with some brief moments of ingenuity? Don't want to come off as a whiny jackoff, it's just... always puzzled me. Like yeah, Jane Doe is a pretty baller noisy record, but every other Converge record after feels like they're trying to ape that exact same moment in time, aside from a song or two per record.

In Flames chat: I love Jester through Clayman. I would even say Clayman is one of my favorite albums period. Swim, Brush the Dust Away, Suburban Me, Pinball Map, Bullet Ride, Another Day in Quicksand, Square Nothing, and Clayman are all phenomenal songs. As for modern melodeath, Insomnium and Belakor loving own.

All We Love We Leave Behind is a super fun record packed full of killer riffs and great drumming, every song is fantastic. It also sounds very different to Jane Doe, there's no way this would have been on an older Converge record for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncyUDtp_rJk DEP's sound changed quite a bit throughout their career and song to song they change things up a lot, they split up without having put out a single bad album which is impressive. They also sound distinctly different from Converge IMO. It sounds like you just don't like the kind of music they do, which is totally fine, but saying either band's body of work is samey is pretty weird to me and makes me think of the people who don't like metal who think it all sounds the same. If you're not into and it and it just sounds like chaotic riffing and yelling I guess that would explain it, but there's a lot more going on than that. But basically, I love both bands because they make great music that I enjoy listening to and have obvious passion for and fun with what they're doing. il_cornuto fucked around with this message at 12:36 on Mar 23, 2018 |
