Odd question:

I read most of the books here involving Eisenhorn and his successor in the floating brain-chair. Sorry, it’s been a while.

Anyways, are there any books set in the 40k universe that are more sci-fi, weird atmospheres, and sense-of-scale focused rather than what are essentially action/intrigue/spy novels? I loved the ones I read, but I got a little tired of those tropes (I also noticed many objects in the universe were called like, I dunno, slag-lance or rip-coal. Those two word combos Abnett uses worked for a while, but after long grew stale).

For instance, the Baba Yaga under water environment was SO COOL. Any thoughts?

Try some Rob Sanders books. Atlas Infernal, Legion of the Damned, and his two Adeptus Mechanicus books are all solid. He's good at Weird 40k.

Legion of the damned is super under appreciated at least for the scene in the church where the marines murk some armed ecclesiachsty dudes and owns the priest

Don't count on Relic being given the Warhammer IP anytime soon after that boondoggle.

So I'm just finishing Cetaganda (Vorkosigan Saga book, although my personal skul-gun places it in the Dark Age of Technology, only prior to xenos contact (or in a portion of the galaxy where they haven't been encountered yet) and the AI revolts).

I need a 40k recomendation, what should I read next?

More of the Vorkosigan stuff tbh. You’ve still got another 10 books or so to go and there’s some really fun stuff in there.

And maybe a sideline into the Five Gods setting; Curse of Chalion and the Penric novellas. Those are all terrific. Bujold is one of, if not the finest writers in SF/Fantasy, keep going on her stuff.

Pawns of Chaos is an old-but-good one, set on a planet where the Imperial authorities have been cut off from the rest of the galaxy so their technology (the thing giving them an edge over the indigenous population) is gradually wearing down.

It was mentioned before but legion of the damned basically hits all three of what you are looking for.

There also needs to be a book that is legion of the damned vs Alpha marines or Night lords.

I don’t know how I didn’t know this, but last night I learned that Titus in ‘Space Marine’ was voiced by Mark Strong, which is pretty awesome. I’m aware that he also voices Eisenhorn in the recent Xenos game as well.

He clearly has a good time with the franchise, I wonder if BL will tap him to narrate one of the audiobooks at some point.

I feel like the Doom glory kill system would lend itself well to space marine melee combat. Only so many slash slash slash splat sequences I can tolerate. Ripping a demon arm off and beating in its skull with it adds a certain spice.

Space Marine's execution system is fine in theory but in practice it is too indulgent with how long the animations are. It's the sync kill problem from the dawn of war games except you're still taking damage. Execution heals should really have faster animations and just turn you into a whirlwind of death instead of lovingly head stomping each ork one at a time. Leave those for the mini boss executions.

How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

DOOM seriously perfected the execution. It flows so nicely with the gameplay without needing any particularly noticeable or egregious rule changes that compromise the challenge.

Unfortunately Deathwing has nothing of the sort and unless the Enhanced Edition is truly transformative it will remain a soulless dull husk of a game, while also really underselling the power of both the player character and the enemy. Genestealer hybrids with normal assault rifles hurting terminator armour as much as melee attacks irks me.

I really enjoyed in Space Marine that you can just execute the guardsmen and grots without stunning them, and sometimes the animation is just a casual backhand and they die.

How can you call a game with that thunder hammer soulless? That fucker was so much fun to use

Or the assault cannon for that matter. Really most of the weapons felt great to me

This can all be fixed by making you just as invincible during executions in Space Marine as you are when you do glory kills in DOOM.

EDIT: Turns out April 10th is the last day to submit. Just did some finishing touches on my submission and sent it in.

Since you didn't get accepted, would you mind telling us what your story pitch was?

Long shot, but does anyone know why "Tales of Heresy" seems to be the only HH novel missing from Audible? Black Library has it for $54 which seems pretty loving ridiculous for an audiobook, but that's the only place I can find it.

Am I missing much if I skip it?

It's just a collection of short stories. Blood Games and After Desh'ea were pretty cool/good and are worth reading, but I honestly hardly remember what the rest were even about. (Other than The Last Church, which is essentially the Emperor going full Dawkins on the last surviving priest on Terra.)
