The middle of Chrono Trigger is the weakest portion of the game. Everything up until the end of time is some of the best RPG set pieces. Then you futz about until you get the masamune, do another fantastic set piece, but then it's back to the boring parts until the big climax and the game gets super good again.

With our special guest star, RUSH! YAYYYYYYYYY

Maybe I should actually try to complete Chrono Trigger one of these days. I'm really bad at finishing RPGs. :saddowns: That can wait, though, because I've got some great arcade racing games to play! I got copies of Burnout Legends and Burnout Dominator for the PSP and gave them a whirl. Trip report (partially crossposted from the Burnout Paradise thread, because nobody reads that):

My takeaway from Burnout Legends after the first set of events is that this would be one of the better games in the series if it was released on a home console. Criterion did an impressive job cramming the entire Burnout 3 experience onto the PSP and it's great to drive on these Burnout 1/2 tracks with Burnout 3's gameplay, but the limitations of the hardware really hold it back. The frame rate being halved is a compromise I can live with since it's at least a pretty stable 30 fps, but the big problem I've got with Legends is the fact I can't see poo poo. The resolution on the PSP is so low and the textures so muddy that avoiding crashes can be really difficult. The rubberbanding also feels more blatant than in the other Burnout games, and while this isn't really a problem with the game itself it's pretty uncomfortable to hold the PSP's right shoulder button constantly (to accelerate or boost, depending on your control scheme). I don't know why EA didn't re-release this on PS2 and Xbox, that would've fixed almost every complaint I have about the game. Maybe they were worried about cannibalizing Burnout Revenge sales. Or maybe they thought it was too similar to Burnout 3, but when has that ever stopped EA?

Burnout Dominator is... strange. It was made by EA UK instead of Criterion, and while it has all the parts that make up Burnout it doesn't really feel like a proper one. That's not to say the game is bad, it's just different. I like the fact they brought back the actual burnout mechanic (use all of your boost meter in one go without releasing the button or crashing, and you earn more boost), but there are too many gimmicky game modes for my liking. The problems with the PSP resolution and the system itself are still there, but you can always play the PS2 port instead.

Man, I've been playing a lot of Burnout recently. *insert dad joke about getting burnt out*

edit: I will say that these games look loving amazing when you actually play them on the PSP screen instead of blown up to a TV.

Honestly there's no reason to actually buy digital Wii titles anymore, just pirate those when you get around to having time to play them. Nintendo's made it clear they have no means nor will to move over Wii purchases to Wii U or Switch, and are almost certain to never let most Wii U stuff count for Switch purchases either.

Wii U should basically be considered a retro console already since we're really on the edge of treating the 360 and PS3 that way and it's truly of their generation.

Yeah now that I've had a chance to sleep on it, rushing to throw money at Nintendo over this isn't really the best response, haha. fwiw there's apparently a rumor of the Rebirths getting rereleased on current consoles anyway... no idea how reliable the source is but boy would I feel dumb if that happened right after I tripped over myself to buy games I wouldn't even be playing for a few years.

Just rumors that Kevtris was, but that was probably just about his design for the Super NT.

I guess there is always RGB scart to HDMI adapter if you don't want to go the Super NT route. Or if you do go the Super NT route but want to play on a CRT periodically, especially for super scope, you could use a HDMI to component adapter (they even plan to release a proprietary adapter according to the MLIG video with Kevtris).

I''ll probably end up going that route unless my tv magically works with the HDretrovision cable I get tomorrow (but I doubt it based on tests with similar TVs).

Pretty much this. The part between fighting Masa and Mune and getting to Zeal is the only part that feels like a slog to me (minus the Magus battle and the asteroid landing). Even the ending side quests are fun, and the Ocean Palace and Black Omen are okay because the music rules.

Some dungeons can be a little tedious, but I'll take CT encounters over random encounters any day. They're the reason I've only ever beaten FF5 and will probably never finish another FF game. Even if there aren't actually more encounters than CT, they're so jarring and I can't stand it.

In other news, ordered a slew of HD Retrovision component cables and they should get here tomorrow, stoked to try them out.

The one JRPG with random battles I can stand is Lufia 2 because it switches up the battles with really cool puzzles, and inside of dungeons you can evade the monsters or force surprise attacks, it also has other cool stuff like a built in roguelike and a casino where you can play poker against a reasonably intelligent opponent. It would be a great game if only the story wasn't so generic and boring.

hexwren
Feb 27, 2008

My main thing with CT, though not part of why I never finished it, is that I often get lost and wander around trying to figure out where I'm going, so I'll end up walking through the same screen three or four times and it'll be a scripted encounter screen so it's like "here we loving go again uuuuuuugh"

The reason why I didn't finish it is because I played it on the DS and got to the part where the game is like "welp, go prepare for the endgame, just truck around time for a while" and the first place I found was the optional dungeon and I got stuck in there, brutally underlevelled and completely lost.

Shibawanko

Terranigma is weird because it retains the leveling system of a conventional JRPG while it's just purely an action game. It would've been better if you'd just had a linear progression in your strength only by getting better weapons and armor, and ramp up the difficulty by introducing new enemy patterns, and do away with levels. Magic should just have been free and usable anywhere but based on a magic meter like in Zelda. The enemy patterns are basically really interesting and a lot of work went into enemy behavior so it's a shame they had to gently caress it all up by shoving a leveling system up the game's rear end just because that's what RPG's do. Still my favorite SNES game though.

Bloody Mary is a weird difficulty spike with no really good grinding spots. Better to cheese it with magic rings. It’s the one stalling point in an otherwise pretty fluid game. Besides the stupid 5 minutes of scripted riddle fights before getting to try again...

Terranigma is one of those games where a level makes a huge difference too, so when you cross a certain threshold you go from doing 3 damage to like 20, to like 50 the next level.

When I played Terranigma as a kid it didn't occur to me to level grind, because I was retarded, apparently. I just kept going at her, doing 1 damage per second using that move where you slice through her gem ring and herself, and then jump over the ring to avoid damage. I eventually got her but it took me a really long time to master it, and I had to use a ton of healing items. But when you're properly leveled for her, she suddenly becomes far too easy. They should have just made it so that with a certain weapon, it always takes X amounts of hits, and with a certain armor, she will kill you in Y amount of hits, instead of using levels, that way the difficulty would have been more easy to control and make the experience better. It's supposed to be balls hard, it just shouldn't take as long as it does with 1 damage. The level system is the problem.

I also did the last boss that way, I was at some ridiculously low level by the end of the game, like 26 or something, and I didn't figure out that you can lure him down by turning your back to him, so I just kept dodging all his attacks until he, apparently randomly, came down so I could hit him for 1 damage at a time. I eventually got him too after about 20 tries or something.

Like, if I had to redesign the game, I think I would just get rid of the magic rings, and instead associate each projectile-style magic effect with a specific weapon (elering effect for the elecrod for example, fire ring for the firerod) and make it a simple button press to use it at the cost of some kind of magic ammo. Then each armor can in turn amplify a magic effect if used with a certain weapon, on top of base defense stats, and just get rid of the levels. It should have been designed more like a Megaman game or something like Symphony of the Night. Having to buy the rings in advance and then not have any good opportunity to ever use them since they can't be used on bosses (except a few, for some weird reason) is stupid. I think it's still my favorite game, but that part was just so poorly thought out.

My dudes, I just came across the most interesting curio while scouring for more Mega Drive/Genesis games. You are probably aware that Sega made an arcade version of Tetris, then tried to launch it on the Mega Drive only to get cockblocked by a ton of legal issues, and the end result is that only 10 copies are known to exist. Enter the European market, where Sega decided to transform the Mega Drive into some monstrous eight cart arcade board thingy called the Mega-Tech. And what ya know, they actually put the Mega Drive version of Tetris on it, because of the sound logic that an arcade is not a console, so Nintendo can't stop us.

And that brings us to the present where I just scored the actual cart for it.

Gorgeous little thing. I have no idea where to find the actual Mega-Tech PCB, but I'm going to keep an eye out for it. Sort of feel an obligation to bring it back to life.

I also got a bunch of recent pick ups for Sega's 16-bit system:

The Mega-Tech/Mega-Play stuff isn't really an unusual thing entirely, since a lot of hardware manufacturers at the time were trying to find way to make an interchangeable arcade system. The Neo-Geo and CPS platforms are the more successful and well known ones these days though.
