I love Ghost in the Shell and my friend wants me to play this with him so I picked the most GitS looking faction and I'm trying to build a list and was wondering if you guys could help.

I'm likely getting the Aleph (not Steel Phalanx) starter pack https://store.corvusbelli.com/products/aleph/280801-0219-starter-pack-aleph
I want to get it up to 300 points. What units do you guys recommend to get there? I've never played this game before so I have no idea where to begin.

My friend also recommended this: https://store.corvusbelli.com/products/aleph/280831-0399-aleph-support-pack

Proxies are amazing. I personally almost never play without a proxy mk5 and/or a proxy mk2. They're also super Ghost-In-The-Shell-y. Deva functionaries are also worth having, particularly the MSV2 Spitfire one for active turn murdering.

Netrods are cool but do actually have downsides (scattering off the board, no way to defend themselves), so remember that.

Even if you aren't super into steel phalanx, I'd recommend you have a myrmidon with smoke grenades somewhere near your list. Smoke is very good in this game and ALEPH have some of the most elite models with multispectral visors. Similarly, don't turn your nose up at some of the Greek heroes. Achilles/Ajax/Hector/Penisthelia to a lesser extent can all totally take over games by themselves, and I'd recommend trying them out. I would try to proxy the different ones in games before you commit to buying any of them though.

It's very possible to play an entire list where every model has effectively two wounds, but watch out for guns with shock ammunition (SMGs, Multi Snipers, viral anything, etc).

You have access to Nagas and Dasyus, which are both absolutely terrifying mid-field roadbumps/incredibly capable specialists. The sophotect is literally a top tier specialist and is also ridiculously survivable.

Most units in Aleph are good, but you will probably be outnumbered all the time. I hope these random snippets help.

Edit: definitely read how proxies work though, they have really weird rules that give them downsides that veteran players will be able to use against you (can't be part of coordinated orders, become useless when isolated, you can only ARO with one at a time)

It is very likely that this year Aleph will get their starter pack and other models remade as part of the new Vedic sectorial - probably in a 2-player box with Ariadna Kazaks, that is rumoured to be announced at a Gencon in August. Current models are good, but the new ones will be in the current, bigger scale, so be prepared.

Calde

Another thing worth mentioning is that Aleph will likely be receiving a decent influx of new models later in the year for their Operations Sub Section, colloquially known as the "Vedic" sectorial due to the Hindu names on those units. A lot of the current Vedic models are the oldest sculpts in the Aleph model line and there's a decent chance of new models for things like Asuras and Dakinis being announced, perhaps even as soon as Gencon in August.

Anything released after Ice Storm is current scale. I think there are a couple of things before that, but couldn't point them out accurately enough to guarantee you anything.

The new JSA box, being the newest product, is at current scale. The old starter box is not.

The scale change came about years ago, likely around when they moved to 3d modelling for sculpts. I took a quick look around and there's a few theories on the exact date they changed over but early 2013 with the Bao troop box seems a believable guess.

Pierzak compiled a model release schedule here that should help with avoiding the old sculpts. It's mostly the ancient Aleph starter box, the old Garudas (they've been redone already), and the Dasyu/Naga sculpts from the looks of things.

Tournament report: came in 11th out of 18. I think that's 1st place among beginners.

Match 1: Annihilation vs Corregidor
Loss 3-9 versus experienced player

Took comedy Su Jian list. Opponent took a 3 man Jaguar link, 3 Morans, HMG Intruder and something else. I chose to go first.

The sheer number of Koalas made me very wary of using a Su Jian aggressively. To add to that, his troops were mostly deployed prone in good cover, and getting LOS to one would expose me to back shots in the opponent's turn. Lone dude with panzerfaust and adhesive launcher was deployed as an ARO piece. One impetuous Kuang Shi exposed himself and was missed by the adhesive. The other two Kuang Shi were in a link. Having borrowed models to proxy, since all mine are in pieces getting prepared to be painted, I very quickly forgot who my lieutenant was and got him killed by a Panzerfaust. :v: In the same coordinated order I stood up a dude to put him into Suppressive Fire as a future ARO piece. Mistake was doing it this early. Spending an order to put him and Kuang Shi Controller into SF ended up with him getting glued.

Next I moved the Kuang Shi link. Tanked a few Koalas. Next order I activated them again, moved up again, tanked more Koalas. No Koalas left on that side of the table. I kept spending orders on one of the Kuang Shi, moving him up. He climbed on to a building with one of the Morans and chain rifled him. Moran and Adhesive Launcher dude missed. Next order I moved him up a little again and chain rifled the Adhesive Launcher as well as putting myself next to the HVT. I think that was my last order.

He started his turn by moving up his Jaguar link. Over the course of three orders the Kuang Shi murdered two of them and put the third in dogged. My two Kuang Shi went dogged. The rest of the turn I don't remember.

Second turn I don't remember almost at all. I don't know what I did, but he stood up his Intruder HMG and proceeded to shoot up a bunch of dudes since he was one inch out of SF range. Forward Kuang Shi would have blasted him if Jaguars hadn't put it into Dogged earlier. He also advanced something or other and managed to make my Sophotect unconcious.

Third turn I did some stuff I don't remember, and ended by advancing the Su Jian near the enemy HVT. There I made a huge mistake. I had no targets and was going to put him into SF. I had to choose between exposing him on the enemy turn to two units, exposing him to two units plus the Intruder HMG or hiding him further back but giving an easy approach to a Boarding Shotgun Moran. For some reason I forgot that I would get an ARO on each instead of just one to distribute against all of them (enemy had used all his command tokens), so I chose to gamble on putting him further back. I also forgot to put him back in combat form. On the enemy turn, Boarding Shotgun took out Su Jian - my rolls went completely unlucky. This opened the way for him to advance a Wildcat or Tomcat (some kind of cat at least), shoot another one of my CG and secure the HVT.

Up to the end it was very close. If I hadn't made that mistake with the Su Jian I might have had a good chance for a close victory.

Opponent ended up getting 7th place overall.

Match 2: Frontline vs USAriadna
Total victory against beginner player

I took Kanren Sophotect and got first turn. The enemy list had two Foxtrot, two Desperadoes, Dog Warrior (?) and Antipode, and the rest was filled in by I think 5 heavy flamethrower Grunts. All but one failed their infiltration roll. The one who succeeded was in an infuriating place that made him very difficult to chain rifle without hitting my own model. I couldn't leave him because then he would have back shots with a flamethrower on a bunch of my guys.

Took two impetuous and two regular orders to finally get rid of him, but no losses suffered. Moved one Kuang Shi up, climed on to a building and killed a Foxtrot. This required a number of orders as he kept missing and making armor saves. This also provoked a number of AROs that missed my Kuang Shi, and ended up with the enemy dropping smoke so that I wouldn't template the five dudes who I would have a shot at. I proceeded to completely forget smoke goes away at the start of his turn and didn't put my Kuang Shi in a position to take advantage of that.

With my last orders I put Assisted Fire on my Rui Shi, moved it up to cover that side of the table and put it into SF.

On his turn he started by moving one of his Desperados. Dropped a bunch of smoke to not provoke AROs then got MadTrapped while advancing. This blocked an advance down that side of the table. Then he moved the Dogs. Kept dodging or shrugging off Chain Rifle and Kuang Shi hits, but slowly accumulated wounds advancing down the table. Managed to take him out one order before he would have been able to Chain Rifle the Rui Shi.

Second turn I started slowly and cautiously advancing and taking out models with the Rui Shi and Kuang Shi. His second turn he target fixated on those two units and put himself in bad positions, and I got very lucky with rolls. Third turn I again advanced, took out all of his unit except for a prone Foxtrot on a building, and put everything into suppressive fire and LOS of it. He chose to die with dignity and go out in a blaze of glory, but didn't take out any of my models.

Result: total wipeout, no models lost. I don't remember what place he came in.

I'll write up the third match later today.

You can check the sculpts history in photos on https://human-sphere.com/index.php?title=Main_Page. Main clue is general design change and non-potato faces.

For example, here is new Garuda:

Here is the older one:

almost always you would want a newer sculpt, not only they are prettier and in the current scale, but they are easier to build, have less moldlines and residual crap to remove

Yu Jing got massively updated with Red Veil starter, the old scale sculpts are: Support pack (new models just announced, coming in June), Celestial Guard box (coming later this year), Shang Ji (legacy unit, almost 100% will be completely reworked), Ninjas without bow. Pretty good in general.
JSA got completely updated, with several units (Asuka, Haramaki, Raiden) forcefully retired with complete replacements. Keisotsu special weapons box is coming very soon, Aragoto will be updated. The older sculpts that won't get a facelift are probably Karakuri and O-Yoroi - the latter is not that bad compared to some big rear end robots in other factions.

IA will likely not be out for a while. It seems unlikely it will be in the Gencon box (As then we'd have two starter boxes with Yu Jing), and we know Tunguska is the next sectorial. I'd say the fact that CB has been pretty quiet about it is probably pretty damning.

Good write up mate, very interesting games. I realise this might just be a typo, but Moran Masai are AVA2 in Corregidor as well as vanilla Nomads - did your oppo actually use 3? The only way to get more than 4 Crazy Koalas in your army is to take Lunokhod Sputniks as well, which have some serious drawbacks.

Vanilla/Bakunin can get more from having Taskmasters as well. I'm curious what you think are the drawbacks of Lunokhods. They've done some really good work for me in the past.

You're right, I should have specified max 4 koalas in Corregidor.

Lunokhods have some possibilities but I don't consider them a mainstay of competitive lists (which Morans are). They suffer from being a unit with mostly short-ranged weapons which, while faster than average, still has to get up the field, while being very hard to hide from AROs or hunting enemy offensive pieces due to Silhouette 4. This leads to a need to spend orders on them in order to use the koalas effectively at all. They are usually limited to deterring aggressive AD or DZ-raiding pieces, but even then you really need big terrain to hide them behind, they are far easier for an opponent to take out than a S2 model which can deploy prone. To use a Lunokhod as an attacking piece, you need to spend the orders and then commit to an attack with the heavy shotgun - potentially very high BS, but burst and range are very limited and it has no skills to leverage modifiers, like, say, the Rui Shi or Bulleteer, which are probably the best models of their type.

I am aware of their advantages - climbing plus with their loadout can be very useful, they can take marksmanship L2 from supportware, all good stuff. But they will be difficult to use whereas Morans are a quasi-cheerleading piece which denies your opponent options right from deployment, and can still score objectives from the midfield. I think Lunokhods would benefit massively from some sort of forward deployment skill or from tweaked weapons - the Akrylat Kanone is very rarely used as you're banking a lot on B1 without strong modifiers, while a HFT is great on a cheap or a very tough model, less so on a model with 1STR and 3ARM which is fairly expensive.
