I will always love this show and it will alway be one of my favorite things because of Tom and Mike and jon, but I feel like it's sort of at a low point because of the callers. none of the good regulars call anymore, the new ones are trash, none of the weirdos and random oddballs call anymore except Avalanche bob who is annoying as gently caress. Most of these regulars right now woudn't have made it to the end of their first call in the WFMU days.

I tend to agree, caller quality has gotten much worse since the move from WFMU. That said some of the regulars were irritating as hell (ugh the Greggulator, Z man, the list goes on) so maybe this is just more purestrain best show. Avalanche Bob sucks mighty powerfully but Tom is gradually turning on him / losing his patience, which amuses me greatly.

MGMT episode was great. I never really listened to them, but those sonic boom stories had me in stitches. Guy was a total mess back then. Static noises for 3 minutes is also fine. Maybe you're not listening to it live, but I enjoy the breather on a show I can't really pause. He could ban all the sick people for a while, not fun listening to people moaning and sniffling, it reminds me of my own mortality and fragility and that's not Best. ecigs for legs was Best.

Kat from Raleigh calls have been an automatic skip for me since I came back and I gotta say it helps. Steven Universe is my favorite show on TV but geez do I wish the fans'd stop calling without seemingly having ever listened to Best Show. Avalanche Bob calls got old real quick too, but I'm starting to enjoy them again with Tom finally starting to turn on him and Bob just completely obliviously running on with his promo.

The callers aren’t the problem it’s just Tom is getting soft now and just won’t hang up on anyone who likes anything he has ever done, including the best show

yeah I skip anyone who calls in to be like "my life has slightly improved Tom" (Jessica from Ithica did this a lot) or anyone who is super obnoxious and annoying like Kat Cuts down the show length and I miss zero good content so it's a win win

It's the type of person Cat is, to take all your good will, empathy and support and then stab you right in the back. Constructing an absurd "Punching Down" and sarcasm is a moral failing narrative to feel big about themselves and control of the situation rather than pitied and tolerated.

I mean it's kinda helpful cause the show is so long and I just skip those calls the second I hear that voice, it's just a bummer that no one gets bad company'd anymore. That was one of the bits that really sold me on the show in the first place, but now he's just incessantly tolerant of all these whiny boring people and it just grinds the momentum to a halt and kills the mood for humor.

I think if Tom went absolutely brutal for a month on GOMPing, Bad Company-ing, and general berating of callers a new equilibrium would hopefully form. That's what we need once a year, not No-Dude-Vember. As I post this Kat from Raleigh calls in to the show to make sure she didn't get GOMPed.

It's kind of funny, I don't think there has ever been a caller so universally disliked. Even on that FB group there was a bunch of people telling her to go away but the thread got deleted. Don't worry. She has assured us that she PM'ed Tom and let him know that she doesn't think his treatment of callers is appropriate.

It’s got to be a tough situation for Tom to handle. She isn’t technically doing anything wrong, but virtually the entire audience is ambivalent or actively dislikes her presence on the show.
