Axeman Jim, I've booked myself a first class ticket on Virgin Trains East Coast, from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh in mid-August. What kind of train am I looking forward to? What should I expect?

^^^^^^^^^ As I have I. MikeCrotch posted:Paxman Valentas and Intercity Swallow livery. Name a more classic combo. In like 1992 or 1991, my parents rented a house on the ECML just south of York. There was, and maybe still is, a massive foamer hangout a bit south of where we were where the line split. I was 6 or 7 and absolutely loved the 125s and, to a lesser extent, 225s (125s look cooler and made engine noises). I left England after that and only came back after privatization and the vulgar paint jobs that replaced executive and swallow liveries made me sad. I may have some intercity toys in a box somewhere. I wonder. nm fucked around with this message at 07:32 on Apr 4, 2018 |

What should I expect? A Class 91 and DVT (a.k.a. Intercity 225) with Mark 4 carriages i.e the ones with proper sliding doors, not the stupid slam doors they put on the Intercity 125 trains that confuse tourists. The interesting bit will be what colour the trains will be: currently they are in bright red Virgin Trains East Coast colours but the franchise is being revoked mid 2018 due to financial mismanagement. So there's an off chance that your train might look something like this instead - - because as it turns out, this is the third time in eleven years that the East Coast Main Line franchise has been revoked due to financial mismanagement. In the above case, the government had to take over from National Express at short notice (under the nondescript "East Coast" moniker), during which time the East Coast Main Line had the highest passenger satisfaction scores on the entire network. This lasted until Virgin won the contract to run the ECML, at which point satisfaction promptly dropped. Ain't privatisation wonderful?

Likely a 225 as Axeman Jim said but depending on what train you've booked, it may be an HST (they leave KGX at 1000, 1200, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700 and 1800). inkjet_lakes posted:The publicly-owned franchise also turned a higher profit I think? For the last year, waste management facilities in New York and one in New Jersey have been shipping tons of biowaste — literally, tons — to Big Sky Environmental, a private landfill in Adamsville, Alabama. But in January, the neighboring town of West Jefferson filed an injunction against Big Sky to keep the sludge from being stored in a nearby rail yard. Can't help but wonder how many of the residents there were perfectly OK with this (no zoning laws) until a literal poo poo train got parked in their town.

Frankly I'm surprised the other town had any luck kicking the cars out of their local yard. I looked it up on google maps and it wasn't even within town limits. Railroads generally have some pretty substantial powers when it comes to what they do on their property.

I can see this getting annoying as hell on a freight train: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av_Kkh3mp4E Apparently, they point at all important signage as they go. Aka, speed or other warnings. This provides proof to the camera watching them that they did indeed see the signage. It also visually makes sure both are aware of the other's actions. But, even in north america, there isn't many driving accidents as much as either bad maintenance or just mishandling when parked (such as the oil car collision sever years ago in canada).

I'll point at cars and such while driving, usually for my own use, as a "merge in behind that guy" or "go after this guy goes past". And US freight trains should totally do that.

Why aren't they pointing at any of the signals? You'd think, especially since they're non-static and the indication can change, that the signals would be the most important thing to acknowledge.

Isn't that exactly what the driver is doing? Pointing twice, first two acknowledge the signal and then the second time to confirm that it's showing a proceed aspect?

So apparently due to anticipated budget cuts, and the recent spate of bad press Amtrak has received, they are going to cut all special trains and chartered service. This means no more private railcars hauled by Amtrak trains, but it also means no more excursion services using Amtrak crews. It is my understanding that all excursion trains on class 1 railroads use Amtrak crews, even when they use historic equipment (ie: steam) because they're the only crews the class 1's will authorize to operate passenger trains on their lines. This could mean an end to most steam excursions in the US. http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2018/03/28-amtrak-to-stop-operating-special-trains-charter-moves
