this whole unruhe book makes me think that it'd be pretty easy to collaborate with some tankie friends on producing a series of print-on-demand collected works of various tankie leaders, since i imagine much of that stuff is in the public domain.

genius.

i'm gonna do it and make 10s of dollars.

Just odd that there's so little analysis in the Western left wing press of a country with a ruling Marxist-Leninist party.

Edited to add, I'm limited to reading in English which probably doesn't help. I could imagine the French left taking a more active interest given the colonial legacy.

i spent a few months there, its pretty nice.

politically its very close to vietnam, though it remains overwhelmingly agriculture based economically. it never really had land reform or collectivization like vietnam or china though, their short attempt at it was insanely unpopular because Laos didn't really have a landlord class like vietnam or china, most families were independent farmers. I think the state retains more control over the economy than in Vietnam and China nowadays, but it still underwent a doi moi-like privatization very early, like still in the 70s only a few years after the pathet lao took over the country

also yeah we totally hosed them, there are vast areas of the country that are totally hosed from our mines. there was a bar in luang prabang where all the furniture was built from old cluster bomb shells (admittedly kinda cool if you dont think too much about it)
