Libertarians are Republicans who want to seem more intellectual. The Volokh Conspiracy, blog full of people claiming to be libertarian, is the best example of that and how fast their opinions on something depending on Republican versus Democrat. My favorite was that the Volokh guys claimed in 2016 that Obama proclaiming May to be Jewish Heritage Month was anti-Semitic an then in 2017 saying that it wasn't a problem that Trump was surrounding himself with a bunch of anti-Semites because antisemitism just isn't a big deal in this country. Libertarians are thoughtful, intellectual, principled individuals who just so happen to always side with republican policies even if they directly contradict something they said a year before.

They probably think they can actually get in there and make some important points and maybe reach a new audience. Its dumb but its probably a virtue to not give up hope that you can reach someone. But that's not what Greenwald is doing. Its pretty clear he thinks he has mutual ground with Tucker and they've bonded.
