That, or to make it so that you don't accidentally get all your cash sucked down to zero so you don't have train fare. I know it doesn't take cash to go to Shibuya, but I think that would be the only instance in the entire game of you losing money without agreeing to it.

Also, Merciless mode is starting to get sort of annoying. Dungeons are fine, but both the fifth and sixth palace bosses have moves that are guaranteed instakills and can't be reflected, so boss fights have a really heavy amount of RNG to them, which double blows because both of those boss fights ALSO have obnoxiously long not-fights leading up to the actual boss that you have to repeat every time you wipe. I spent maybe two hours on the casino boss and still haven't beaten it, gonna go to bed and try again tomorrow.

It feels kind of pointless, like it was put in for "realism" but then maybe they rolled it back and had it so you never actually had to pay the late fees.

I mean, libraries usually have late fees too (maybe not a school one though), but there were plenty of times I checked out books from the Shujin library and completely forgot about them. :v:

I just started Persona 4 Golden and just want to say that Teddie is way worse than Morgana as early game navigators go, and also Nanako is the best and the fact that I wasn't courageous enough to stand up for her to Dojima is some bullshit :colbert:

I wish P5 had a proper younger sibling confidant (I don't really count Futaba since she's basically as old as you and the arcade kid is eh), the time spent with Nanako and your friends is easily my favorite parts of this game so far. She's just so happy to spend time with her big bro.

It's interesting how different this game is from P5. I guess...what, ten whole drat years of development will do that? I like that this game seems to place more emphasis on tarot cards, though I definitely prefer the negotiation mechanic in 5 to the RNG Persona roulette. I didn't think I would dig the dungeons in this game being basically Mementos but it's alright so far, having better-ish music helps and the fact that there's an actual story involved makes the randomness easier to swallow.

My PSTV seems to have access the whole drat series, including 1 and 2. I imagine they're a bit...aged, but are they worth a playthrough? I'm reading the P3 LP so I don't really need to play that one I guess.

For Persona 1, PeaceDiner did an LP if you're fine with that. It didn't finish overall, but did get through the SEBEC route at least (which is the "main" storyline). He just sorta stopped working on it midway through the Snow Queen route. It was pretty dang good, and I'd probably recommend it if you don't wanna deal with playing it yourself since it can definitely show its age in places.

Money can be really tight in P5 early on, especially if you're trying to do Palaces in as few days as possible and ignoring Mementos until you build a stack of requests.

Once you get the SP restoring accessory that ceases to be an issue for basically everyone though.

I was always confused when people talked about having money trouble in P5. I think maybe that's a result of people buying gear all the time? I'm still using everyone's default guns in November because gun's aren't really supposed to be for damage, they're about exploiting weaknesses to trigger All Outs, and Melee weapons don't increase the damage of skills so I only invest if they're reasonable number boosts. Realistically, I only get a new weapon if the number value is like a 40-point jump and never buy guns, but I can totally see having money problems if you were constantly buying new gear. Once you hit the fifth palace you can negotiate for like 20k Yen from multiple enemies, so even without the mementos confusion that's basically the end of money trouble.

Also, when the game first came out I saw a lot of misinformation about Futaba's age and people saying she's a middle-schooler, but she's the same age as the MC. She says that her mom and Sojiro took her to get sushi to celebrate graduating middle school, and her mom died two years before the game started, so she would have been in the same grade as the MC/Ryuji/Ann if she hadn't dropped out.

No, the sushi trip was to celebrate her getting into middle school.

I ran out of money a few times in P5; Once or twice during Kaneshiro's palace, ironically. I think I also ran out after making Set with High Counter and immediately fusing Satan (whom I dumped because Diamond Dust, Riot Gun, Psycho Force and Black Viper aren't good enough to justify suboptimal fusion chains!) and a final time in the last dungeon after making a full charge crit Michael. I could have farmed the Mara for money to make Metatron I guess, but I just wanted to finish the game since I feel the final act was kinda dragging.

Persona 0/SMT IF is neat if only because it's the only Persona game that has a canonical female protagonist; Tamaki, the heroine, is a party member in Persona 2.

Persona 1 was interesting, but you need to not play the original NA version that butchered the script and completely cut out the Snow Queen quest.

Persona 2:

Persona 3 classic is alright. FES is also alright. Portable is my favorite Persona game, edging out P5 by a very little bit. I'd love for it to have it's umpteenth remake and get a remaster of P3P that shook up the pacing a bit. I'm extremly biased because Aigis was my first crush that wasn't on a boy when I was 10 or so

Nothing against the FES LP or anything, but I highly suggest you check out Feinne's archived P3P LP, just because the female MC's social links are so much better.

Since this is sorta being the general Persona thread more than the SMT thread is: Replaying Persona 2, I really wish Nyarthalotep would show up again. (P5 final dungeon spoiler) I'm surprised Yaldabaoth wasn't explicitly a minion of his; Don't they even share the black butterfly motif, or does Yaldabaoth not have that and I'm just misremembering?

I wonder if they'll continue the colour motif and have Persona 6 be green and greed themed.

The compendium is INSANELY expensive so even getting hundreds of thousands of yen from chests and shuffle time you'll run out if you want to start optimizing, though.

The best way to hunt the gold shadows is, once you find them, to back out to where you can't see them on the minimap anymore and have your team spread out and search the floor themselves. They won't run from your teammates, so once one of your party members gets into a fight with it, recall everyone so they rejoin you and then join the skirmish your teammate is having. Sometimes you'll get unlucky and they'll run away on the first turn, but P3P seems to have a really high rate of having those floors where only treasure hands appear, so it's pretty easy to get the needed medals at that point.

Also I agree, the compendium prices are ridiculous in the postgame and really limit how wild you can go with fusion. Surprisingly though, Im playing Merciless and the P5 compendium is totally usable once you get to the midgame where you're making money hand over foot. The thing that made me super upset on my first playthrough was that I didn't max Strength, not knowing it allowed you to remove the fusion level cap, but once you enter the final final dungeon Strength gets permanently locked off, so if I wanted to see any of the level 70+ Personas I was gonna have to grind out all those levels and all that cash, but entering that dungeon ALSO locks you out from fighting the Reaper who is the best source of both EXP AND Money in the game.

Also, I'm at the very very end of November and the only Social Links I have left are Strength (can't do because my level isn't high enough to fuse Bugs/Seth), Empress at 7, Hanged at 7, and Tower at 8. I'm gonna make it my dudes. Currently in Mementos doing a few loose missions and unlocking Tower 9.

One of the best advice I can just give anyone here is that if you're doing a second playthrough for trophies, just look up the p5 perfect playthrough guide and follow it. It'll get you exactly what you need.

Also you're gonna hate knowing this but I'm like 90% sure you have to read all books in one playthrough. You can't just read what you're missing from your last playthrough.

Neither of those things are defined. Sojiro just says he heard about Joker through a friend of Joker's parents and took him in because Joker reminds Sojiro of what he himself used to be like when he was young. He worked with Wakaba during the course of his former job but we're never told what this was though it was likely something black box program oriented considering the nature of her work.

both

And Kanji's portrayal is, appropriately, very complex. I'll spoiler tag this just in case but they're really light spoilers and not related to the main story at all, but I'm gonna talk about Kanji a lot:

Kanji appears to be gay from what you'd see on the Midnight Channel, but further development turns out that it's less about being into guys and more about feeling more comfortable around them than women, who he finds judgmental and genuinely mean. This sort of conflicts with the fact that he's definitely attracted to the """""boy""""" he's talking to when you're following him around town, so for a large portion of the game his sexuality is meant to be interpreted by the player as gay. This changes when he finds out eventually that the aforementioned boy isn't a boy and so turns out he's straight, and from that point on it's openly acknowledged by the party that Kanji has a crush on Naoto and is not gay. I'm not really up on social politics or whatever, but I think that's a fine portrayal, but maybe blogs would refer to that as "problematic" or something, I'm not sure. The real complexity comes in the form of Yosuke, who CONSTANTLY shits on Kanji for being gay in a "ew we can't share the same tent on a school trip because ur gay" kind of way and is one of the main reasons people tend to hate Yosuke. However, as someone who works with teens, I think this is a pretty accurate portrayal of a high school guy - but the interesting thing is that the end result of that portrayal is people thinking Yosuke is an rear end in a top hat and being a lot more empathetic toward Kanji and the struggles he's going through, and it makes his whole "wanting to be accepted for who he is" plight a lot more apparent and relevant to the player when even your teammates aren't totally ready to accept him. I don't know if that was the dev's intentions when deciding the characters, but that's definitely the result I've noticed from people I've talked to who played the game.

The final boss theme in P5 is kinda eh, but the one that plays after you beat him is pretty good. The final boss theme of P1 was kinda forgettable and I can't even remember what plays for the final bosses in P4 and if it's any good or not. I wasn't a fan of New World Fool. Crawling Chaos from EP had some good moments but it was pretty underwhelming in general.

e: I went and checked. Ameno-Sagiri and Kuzumi No Okami's themes aren't that good, but Izanami's is pretty cool.

That said I find it weird the bonus boss just has Rivers In The Desert too. The game feels weirdly budget-y at times.

The second part. His replacement is kinda annoying but not nearly as much.

WRT homosexuality, apparently Yosuke was going to be a gay option at one point in development, based off of some files from TCRF from Yosuke that sounded like a romantic confession so... Who knows?
