I've resumed watching Full Metal Panic.

In Episode 14, I was disappointed when Chidori teamed up with that rear end in a top hat. I'm not sure what she was trying to accomplish by that.

Episode 15 introduces Sosuke's homeland of Helmajistan. OK, the Khanka Autonomous Region was one thing, but Helmajistan is just a stupid name. Apparently the LNs used actual countries (Afghanistan and North Korea); I guess the anime people felt it would be in bad taste, especially since the US invasion of Afghanistan began shortly before the anime came out.

Edit: Wow, there are a lot of stupid people in Mithril. The ones who aren't are basically just the old man, Tessa, Grace, and sometimes Sosuke.

Also, you can tell Gauron's mech is better than everybody else's because it's red, lol.

I guess I made a slight mistake there. Zaied's mech is the red one; Gauron's is the one with the long white hair.

Thoughts on the rest of The Wind Blows at Home: Zaied is a rather uninteresting case of the Forgotten Friend, New Foe archetype; Gauron even points out how uninteresting he is. I think he did feel something towards Sosuke, despite what he claimed, but only enough to make him slightly hesitate when he had Sosuke on the ropes. I guess it is slightly interesting that Sosuke won in part by being slightly more willing to kill Zaied than vice-versa, though that's probably less because Sosuke cared less about Zaied than because Sosuke had more to fight for; Zaied's only reason given for his actions was "I want to be on the winning team," which isn't very inspiring. Plus Sosuke was actually less willing to kill Zaied at first, which is why is ended up on the ropes in the first place.

I'm a bit unclear what happened with Gauron in the end; I guess he realized he was losing the Lambda Driver clash and ran away? It felt a bit jarring when Sosuke used the Lambda Driver there (why didn't he use that against Zaied?) but then I realized he was just following Zaied's advice about conserving bullets.

The next episode preview is a pretty jarring change of tone; it looks like we're straight back to wacky comedy. Though I guess that makes sense,
since Sosuke doesn't really seem like the type to brood about killing Zaied.

Edit: Wow, the beginning of episode 18 is an interesting payoff of sorts to what I wrote earlier about Gauron gradually burning all his bridges. It seems he has his own project and saw the terrorism for hire as a "side job." After burning another bridge, he's decided to focus on his real evil plan.

in versions of konosuba before the anime, aqua has panties, yes. and in this interview with the character designer for the anime who also handled animation direction on half the series, they talk about how stuff like how darkness's breasts just kind of. grew, and grew. and he admits to being responsible for the bouncy no-bra animation throughout the series. or how he just happened to be responsible for the succubus episode and the scene where darkness scrubs kazuma's back.

it's not mentioned, but i imagine aqua's situation was the result of similar, mm, happenstance.

i love the part where he talks about his goals for season 2 and megumin's cuteness/consistency because i was totally on the lookout when s2 aired and well. the cuteness factor was 10/10. good job, kikuta.

double tangent: sakugabooru credits this guy for the henshin dances in madoka magica rebellion story. what a legend

Juvenile sexual humor is everywhere, sure, but in anime the pantyshot and accidental pervert jokes are weirdly ubiquitous tropes. I can't think of equivalents in western media I've seen.

What's the deal with all the joke in sitcoms about people walking in on someone in the shower? Is it supposed to be funny, or sexy? Someone who knows about Americans please explain

Not to say that Western stuff doesn't sexualize or objectify characters - of course it does! But a lot of anime will sneak in a panty shot or whatever in a scene that's not even supposed to be funny or sexy "as a bonus" in a way that totally ruins the intent of the scene, and that sucks (and similar stuff sucks in Western media too).

I mean, ymmv on this stuff. I love a lot of very fanservicey anime, but I think it's fair to say 'this is gross' sometimes.

It's a complex thing because artists are by nature thirsty af. Figure drawing is a skill mostly honed by drawing lots and lots of nude people and the thirst transcends gender and sexuality, men and women artists partake equally even if you may only notice one or the other. Not to treat artists like a protected class or different from non drawing folk but it's my near universal experience that this is true. Its filtered through a world dominated by a patriarchal lens and there's a huge variety of social stances you can take on whether sexuality is good or bad or maybe only certain kinds of it are good or should it be regulated or if not censored tamed at least, but I think you're always gonna see it because like I said, artists thirsty af.

Personally I wanna see more harmless or healthy sexuality and relationships in everything because love and lust is a huge part of the human condition and we should probably be sharing realistic and good relationships with kids more than we are showing them violence. Love good.

imo the whole thirst/'horny on main' culture kinda bugs me because its basically the end product of a generation of kids being raised on the internet with porn all around them developing a weird self-consciousness about sex. like goddamn its okay to just wanna gently caress something you dont gotta be ironically detached and attack anyone who isnt ironically detached enough about it

I like thirst as a turn of phrase because its cleaner to say than I wanna gently caress this and sometimes horny is too funny a word.

I feel people are using thirst in full sincerity more nowadays than as ironic humor.
