For instance, let's say I want the Control Panel. But, I don't really remember that it's called the "Control Panel," but I know it's where the settings live. So I hit the windows key and type "settings." The only thing that pops up is the "windows store app" for settings, which is a pared-down version of SOME of the control panel stuff, but doesn't have half of what I need. Or, if I want the Administrative Tools and start typing "adminis" on the start bar, it brings up (for me) "Change user account control settings" by default, until I get to the second word. If you type "control panel" but accidentally click on "settings" (which it brings up as the second option, until you start typing the word "panel,") by accident, "Settings" will come up as the top option whenever you type "control panel" from then on. It's loving broken, everyone knows it, and you absolutely 100% need a way to get to the features you need without having to shot-in-the-dark search for something. There's nothing wrong with still having a start menu - it's not broken and lets you see what you have installed, as well as gives you shortcuts to things like settings pages. Why remove it? Doing so would only further obfuscate the actual file system, a la mobile devices.

Gotta say as much as I was bitching about win10 in the "aint broke dont fix it" manner it's actually net improvement over 7 in many ways. Well I don't think you're that average, but yes if you don't make a shortcut yourself, this is the easiest and fastest way to access any functionality 100% of the time. Much as Jerry Cotton is usually wrong, I’m pretty sure Intel was supporting the radiation-hardened 386s it was selling for critical applications at least until production ended in 2007. Products like that don’t go without support. Sadly it doesn’t seem to be on Ark to get the exact support status but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Intel would still support them now.

Well my anecdotal experience is that since win 7 onwards I had much fewer calls from mom and grandma due to the search function. I told them to just type in mouse to do stuff with mouse, or type in display to change display settings. It works much better in 10 and even goddamn cortana will get you where you wanna go in windows utilities. If they cant find it, the first thing is a bing search term that'll redirect to a ms support page or forum. The annoying thing about the janky win10 hybrid settings/control panel is that people used to control panel now gotta figure out where the gently caress their settings are, but i've learned where everything is after like a month of using it. I'm pretty sure MS would go the new settings way but they'd completely alienate the tech crowd probably. I mean I agree it's half assed but it's a compromise. 10 for average user is user friendly, and anyone knowing how to use run won't care because you can bypass all this. You wanna talk poo poo UI let's talk all the touchscreen apps. Somebody handed my an ipad and I couldnt loving do anything as it's so different to everything im used to.

Windows 8 was an abomination. Stupid poo poo, like when I needed to copy information from a PDF into a web interface and it displayed my PDF as full screen and I couldn’t figure out how to window it like a real OS. Even now I keep forgetting there’s no decent native option for PDF’s or viewing images and it keeps opening stuff in Edge. Oh right, that’s a great catch-all for everything. Microsoft Edge. Or you get an alert asking if you’d like to make this application a default and when you say ‘yes’ it just tells you to go to settings.

the worst thing about windows 8 is that microsoft said huh, you know, this UI we built because ~touch screens~ would be fantastic on a server OS when we rolled out windows server 2012 on some test machines at my old job, we just laughed and laughed before realizing wait, gently caress, we're going to have to move to this and actually use it

Since Windows 7 I've been using Free Launch Bar so I can have a couple of popup menus of apps down by the Start button. No need for icons on the desktop, or even pinning apps to the task bar.

I vaguely remember something from Alias or Autodesk maybe a decade ago showing a proof of concept using two mouses for design work. First mouse was like your traditional mouse and the second was your pallete of tools that you brought over and clicked through to use whatever modifier you wanted. Closest I've seen is the SpacePilot which just moved your view in 3D space.
