It's hard to hate on Irvine because there's nothing there. He barely counts as a character.

It would have been neat if Edea killed Irvine at the assassination attempt. Throw the bullet right back into his dumb cowboy face. Then come up with a new 6th character who maybe has something to do for the rest of the game.

I like how we all talked about the various insane things in FF8 and nobody mentioned the whole “equiping these monsters irreversible drains your memories and erases them, the game only used this to make it so the contrived backstory of the protagonists works without having to give character backstories and is never explored or comes up again”

Three is the least insane final fantasy right? I'll assume so, and ask: On a scale of final fantasy 3 to the thirteen series, how insane is final fantasy 8?

My main thing with Irvine is how he turns out to be so catastrophically useless in the Edea hit, but not only is he allowed to stay on the team, he goes back to being his smug shithead self and nobody has the decency to call him out on it

Also I feel like the never really gives the right amount of gravity to the fact that Cid and Edea run a school of child mercenaries, starting with the children that they raised at their orphanage

God, FFVIII doesn't really 'work' but all the individual pieces sound so amazing outside of that context. It seems like it's trying to play with too much rather than zeroing in on a few pieces.

...my new idea for a writing contest: draw three random concepts or story beats from across Final Fantasy, and write a short story incorporating all of them.

Hmm. How about suddenly moon people, an evil soul tree from the void, and magical nuke stones

I was mostly thinking of this when I disqualified it. An evil knight turns into a demon because of time travel or something. Even funnier in the NES translation because he just threatens to knock you down.

Never forget that all of FFI is a stable time loop.

lobster22221 posted:

Okay, I can do this. The moon people have the nuke stones, and suddenly fire them from the moon at the evil void tree. They're inscrutible aliens regardless, but the tree was a common threat.

I mean, either that or the moon people are void trees... either way we're talking 'weird soft sci-fi', it could be a Doctor Who story with minimal changes.

What if the evil void trees that moon people were nuking happened to be humans from the future?

I would argue that the final boss being the first boss in a time travel story is the literal opposite of insane, and probably the only bit of genuine neat story in the first game

Uuuh also I guess it's the only bit of story in the game now that I think of it

Just because something is an insane idea doesn't mean it is a bad one. Crystal Chronicles whole gimmick was that there a giant monster that poisoned the world to eat bad memories

Not that all of final fantasies idea's were gold or anything. Tactics Advanced had magical judges telling you not to perform specific actions, but still allowing combat in civilian areas, and even rewarding you for other actions. It was because of gameplay, but it was also integrated into the story so I'm counting it.

Time travel demon transformation is kind of insane, so I figured you were saying it wasn't insane because it was a neat idea for the time. I guess I misinterpreted. Also the time travel element was kind of last minute wasn't it?

The word insane is starting to lose its meaning and I think we need to start using other words.

Idk to me it just isn't that insane as presented but ive played a million other RPGs before even touching ff1 and it is pretty subjective in the first place so it's not like you're wrong to think so or anything

Time travel fuckery - which as noted is kind of unique and clever for an NES RPG - aside, FF1 does a lot of neat little stuff I appreciated on a recent replay

Despite the limited palette of sprite resources, it actually does a pretty good job of making every single town feel unique by arranging those resources differently; Pravoka is bustling and cosmopolitan, Elfland is natural, Melmond is a decaying shithole, and Crescent Lake is secluded and quaint.

A lot of craft went into it, for something with an (apparently?) shoestring budget and small team

FF is pretty fuckin stupid in general. But thats JRPG's in general lets not kid ourselves here. Dragon Quest is usually the most straightforward ones and that has hosed up poo poo like watching your dad get beaten and burned to death in front of you.

Let alone with FF like dying to take over hell/heaven, Hyperbolic time underground, worlds combining and everyone's ok with it, Submersible castles via sand, Saiyans, Dreams dreaming their dreams into reality, whatever the gently caress was going on in 13, etc.

Cats and dogs living together, hiding the tv remote, and mixing mayonnaise with ice cream. weird stuff.

That weird poo poo is part of why people like Final Fantasy despite all of its flaws though. Sometimes the game is even good.

Suikoden is a great game, and its pixel art is timeless. And yes in Suikoden 2 and 3 there's a chef, and you can give him spices that are otherwise mechanically disguised as trade goods whose price fluctuates as the game timer ticks. Ice Cream + Mayonnaise makes Fried Ice Cream
