People have been decorating stuff like hammers and drills since they have existed, it has nothing to do with "modern people". If you didn't actually have a sense of aesthetics about these things you would not care one way or another, you would be completely apathetic and we would not be having this conversation. Instead you very obviously do care about how these things look, your aesthetic when it comes to these things skews towards the utilitarian, but that too is an aesthetic, no different than chromed metal, blinking lights or minimalist black boxes.

I don't care about RGB but I have my PC in my bedroom so I did have to put gaffer tape over like 10 different "always on" LEDs for the Ethernet port, cable modem etc. for when I sleep. No big deal though.

Wondering if this would be the right place to ask... We have a sapphire RX-480 (well, pending RMA as it is busted right now) - and would like to look into a 1080p 144hz freesynch monitor that is either VA or IPS... Trouble is, I can't seem to find many of those. Most of the freesynch IPS monitors are now 1440p. We'd like to try a different monitor type that isn't TN. Anyone have any suggestions?

look at refurbs or on ebay, most of what you want is going to be 3 years old or more if you want 1080p 144hz, its TN. Most anything ips will be lower than 144hz or much higher res https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F9UC20Q/?tag=dislag-20 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A0ZRR50/?tag=dislag-20 do you have an actual need for ips or you just want it because its better. It will have worse display lag if you play anything where that matters. IPS and high refresh dont really go together Fauxtool fucked around with this message at 03:18 on Mar 30, 2018 |

I have an RX480 GB I bought when it first came out, and a freesync 2560 x 1440 monitor. Am I correct in thinking that there's currently no way to upgrade further that doesn't involve spending northwards of $500?

Yeah we'd like to try something that isn't TN; that being said, my current monitor (an LG w2252tg) supposedly has an 8ms response time, so I'd be curious to see how that compares to, say, a vertical-alignment monitor, or an IPS one... The only one I think that comes close, might be this one from Viewsonic... https://www.viewsonic.com/us/monitors/shop/vx2758-c-mh.html It's an mva panel though - not TN from what the specs state... anyone have experience with MVA monitors?

VA monitors can get really bad ghosting, easily much worse than what you see on IPS ones, so you probably want IPS if you're looking at 144hz and don't want TN. And really, at prices they charge for 144hz screens, IPS is probably the only sane choice in tyool 2018 tbh.

So I am thinking of upgrading my gpu to get some more performance out of my system. I also sometimes get situations where the screen freezes, colors fo wonky and I need to reboot and I'm thinking my preset gpu might be dying. I have a geforce 750ti right now and could get a 1050ti for a reasonable price (I live in Finland so the selection is not as good as in the States), how much of an impact would it have on performance? I have 8gb of memory, Samsung SSD and an i7-3770k processor. I cannot afford to replace everything right now.

It'll be a bit better than twice as fast and use similar amounts of power. If you can get one for close to MSRP it's a reasonable upgrade. Nvidia will launch the sub 1000 dollar cards this summer and the sub 200 dollar ones will probably be around winter.

Hopefully serious rumors coming in over the past 24 hours. Nvidia recently taped out their new gaming card on TSMC's 12FFN node (so 5 months from now at the earliest), and some redditor knows a retailer in India who let slip his company expects the new line around September.

lmao Sad, really. I used to be a big proponent of multigpu solutions for high resolution screens, because at first it was the only way to get high resolutions at high settings working playably at all, and later buying 2 midrange gpus was about as expensive as a single expensive one, but you got decent fps at high resolutions. this combined with: 1) crossfire mostly just worked for me in most games I needed it to 2) games in which it didn't were either old poo poo or indie games that run on potatoes anyway, where a single gpu is fine meant I had basically 0 problems with it. Maybe I was just very lucky in my choice of games and cards, anecdotes and all, but it seemed to worked great. These days, many modern shader tricks don't work with multigpu at all, so it's all trash. The best you can get is that nvidia SLI "AA on second gpu" thing, and that's about it.

What is it with RGB on hardware. It's the stupidest loving thing in the world. They must think we are like children. RGB lights on keyboards. RGB lights on cases. RGB lights on hardware that's enclosed in a box and you never look at it. It's like being in a nursery. I think it's childish and juvenile as gently caress. RGB can be overused as you say, or it can be used to make your workspace look cohesive in an adult way. Don't turn on all the lights. The reason they are RGB is so that you can have options. I'm sure companies got complains that the power indicator was one color, but their numlock indicator was a different color. The answer? just give RGB. My mouse has an RBG accent. It's nice because I can find it in the dark and it tastefully matches my keycaps. Backlit keys can be functional in the same way. If some people want to see the hard work they put into a custom watercooling system, I don't see that as childish either.
