I suppose it doesn't have to have a really wide bulb like that, but I thought that'd be a good way to minimize shadows. Clip-on would be ideal though, since I'm trying to do a setup really similar to the one in the picture.

MaxMini has this, it's Russ-sized and Russ-gunned but the turret is KV-2'ed:

E: Also the Demolisher is really more like an engineering tank/urban assault gun (like the Churchill AVRE or the Sturmtiger) the KV-2 was designed as an assault gun but it had a regular 6" howitzer not a high caliber (>250mm) snub-nose like the other two?

Looking sharp! I'm curious about the base: Is that a set of cork layers with overlaid texture paint forming the rock there, with the base proper being covered by crackle paint? I'm interested in achieving a similar effect, and want to figure out a way to roughen up the surface of the cork sheeting I'm using to make the terrain.

Thanks! You pretty much nailed it, although there’s no texture paint on the cork sheet, it’s just roughed up by breaking bits off with my fingers and some clippers, and then sealed with PVA and painted.

I really wouldn't worry about any of this technology effecting (affecting?) miniatures. Gunpla (and similar) have had coloured plastic over a decade and GW are only just using it and even then it's still single colour, only for starter sets and their specialist games instead of multi coloured models assembled from different sprues. The only possible change I really foresee in the future is maybe having heads on a seperate skin coloured sprue, although knowing GW they'll probably be a seperate box of heads you can buy or something.

As for scale models this stuff is hardly bad, it really doesn't hurt to have parts be in the basic colours.

What's funny is that while Bandai is rolling out that two layered plastic technique on the Fumina figure to reduce the need for painting, at the same time they've announced that the upcoming Leo kit is going to have a new kind of joint construction to make it easier to paint

I'm trying to figure out a good way of making Chinese-themed mosaic bases for my Yu Jing.

Mosaic ones seem to be pretty niche, and none of the ones I've found have a particularly Chinese feel. Plus, a lot of the texture stamps tend to have areas of nice detail, but the actual tiles just look subway-y.

I've tried to do something with Milliput, but it's been difficult to work with, at least for a beginner. I'd also rather make a larger area stamp I can put different parts of on bases than sculpt each one.

Any recommendations?

due to the lack of traffic and declining rate of completed entries for the C-SPAM Gunpla Challenge, we have relocated the challenge to ADTRW's Gunpla Thread. But the challenges go on! The rules are simple, purchase any Gundam Plastic Model, and build, paint and customize it to fit the theme of the Challenge!

The theme for the April/May Gunpla Challenge is represent your local state/province/prefecture! What does your home state, province or prefecture mean to you? How could it be represented in the form of a five inch tall plastic robot? The only limit is your imagination!

Everybody get to work, entries are due early May-ish! The winner receives pride in a job well done and esteem in the eyes of their fellow posters, also, every entry wins!

The monthly Challenge of battle damage (I'm Gonna Wreck It!) comes in the form of these KO'd players. This appears on the models as a callback to last month's blood effects (made with Nurgle's Rot and green ink), and the smashed bits of helmet around their bases.
(If alcohol abuse counts as battle damage, we could also include the spilled beer and wine on the bard's base.)

I don't know that I totally agree, with mine I feel like some of the metal scrapes are a little too light, and some of the brown areas are a little too soft and smudgy. I was trying eyeshadow applicators instead of torn up foam for the first time and I don't think I got their use down quite right. I'd like to go maybe 20% further on the weathering, and get a little more depth in the yellow shading.

Yeah that was where I had a pin to hold it on a cork while painting. After the photo I went in with a slightly larger bit and drilled out all 4

Sure, after I posted that I realized that it's probably just personal preference at that point.

Yellow is generally a bold color, so anything that detracts from it is hard to handle. Where greys, dark greens, etc are fairly easy to dismiss.

I'm getting back in to roleplaying games and I'm GMing a game with some friends. I don't have any (usable for fantasy) minis for combat, so I was going to buy and paint ~10 goblins ~10 skeletons and a few larger enemies. I wanted to know what site people generally recommended for fantasy minis independent of wargames? My first thought was to just buy some from mantic, but then I started thinking about how I don't have any paint supplies, so I started reading this thread and now I'm asking my question before I fall into a pit of reading the entire thread for the rest of my Sunday.

Well, Reaper is a good place to start, especially if you're going for cheap minis. Their Bones line features multi-packs of things like goblins, kobolds, and skeletons. Some pretty decent character models as well, with a slightly exaggerated/"heroic" look. There's a good chance you'll need to do some fiddly maintenance on them, but there's a thread for that.

There's also the Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures line from Wizkids, which go for a slightly more "realistic" aesthetic. An advantage is that they come pre-primed with Vallejo Surface Primer; a disadvantage is that they may also require some work.

"Generic" fantasy stuff I like, in roughly-descending order:
  • Otherworld Miniatures: Fantastic for old-school D&D-style monsters (their human sculpts are hit-and-miss though).
  • Reaper Miniatures: Very hit-and-miss, but they have a big enough selection that you can probably find good stuff. I'll only buy stuff made from Bones though if there are no thin/fiddly bits, since Bones are really flimsy.
  • Dark Sword Miniatures: Good for PCs or if you need, and I quote, a "Cheese Cake Pug Princess".
  • Frostgrave miniatures: Some good stuff, but overall I think the sculpts are pretty basic/unexciting.
  • Mantic Games: The price is great, but man are some of the sculpts bad.
  • Games Workshop: Often overpriced, but I like their skeletons.

Correct.
To make it extra easy, put them in the freezer for a few hours first. The superglue gets extremely brittle in the cold, and you can break whatever you glued together apart without fearing undue stress on the plastic.

For generic fantasy, the current guys are Reaper Bones and WizKids Unpainted lines. Both are really cheap and made of a slightly rubbery very durable material. They both have good selections of PCs and monsters, and I know you can get some skellies and goblins from reaper for super cheap. They aren't marvelous works of art, but they're plenty good for DnD.
