Back in 2012 my wife had an internship in DC for the summer. We moved into a hotel in Falls Church VA with our 1.5 year old kid and never EVER drove in the city that entire summer. The one time I even came close to that was taking the freeway through DC to Baltimore early one morning as we left the city in the wake of the direcho that knocked out power to our hotel for four days.

Also beware because DC/NOVA recently installed a ton of toll roads that require EZ pass, no way to pay cash, and will send you a big rear end bill in the mail for a penalty because you didn't pay the toll, even though there is literally no other way to get around. Make sure you have an EZpass transponder if you drive near there, basically.

It's worth every penny to me being in the DC area to be a little closer in so as to not have to deal with the traffic most of the time. I take the bus or metro to work most days the only times I drive is when I have to be in super early before the buses/trauns start running.

Worth it to not sit in line and pay on my phone while watching tv at some point.

You can pick up a convenient 'EZpass To Go' or similarly branded transponder at various rest stops and supermarkets. It's preloaded with $20 in fares, you can instantly stick it on your vehicle, and then you can register it online to use it like a normal one.

I can't believe anyone actually uses toll roads instead of adding 3 hours to their drive time by taking local roads to circumvent the tolls.

Maps and roads aren't static, and need constant correction. When I'm not being a professional map nerd at work I spend some of my free time correcting map issues and update requests as well.

When I was working in DC but living in Virginia there were days where I considered just running myself off the road to my own demise rather than sitting in traffic yet again. DC is hostile to human life and this is reflected in its roadways.

There should be a support group for anyone that had to travel through the 495/270 spur corridor. We lived 9 miles from my wifes office, door to door. Fastest route was via 270 and it would still take her an hour if she left by 6am.

Also Google Maps is really good about correcting its route to save you time. On one road trip it suddenly has us turning off the interstate to take small, unlit country roads that nobody could have ever predicted to let us skip sections that were heavily backed up due to construction or accidents. Sometimes I still need to tell my mom to stop fiddling with routes in her head and just use Google, because she always wants to turn off at some other exit and take back roads that she "knows" will get her there faster. Every time she goes against her GPS, she ends up stuck at endless red lights.

It isn't one long truck either. There are two trucks where you can barely see the bottom of the second truck in the middle. Two blades per truck I think.

Sometimes there's a teensy accident when they're transporting those turbine blades. Of course 'teensy' for one of those blades translates to 'whoops that'll gently caress up your year LOL' for everyone else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FWQh8N-A2A Apparently the blue truck was tailgating the turbine truck and its escort vehicle and managed to clip them, causing everything to go FUBAR. The truck driver got away with minor injuries but another driver smashed into the turbine and was pretty badly injured. Edit: the real fun way to transport them is to just attach the base of the blade to the truck and have the rest of it just hanging out there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cnHui4pFBU Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Apr 3, 2018 |
