Apparently he left that band a few years ago then rejoined recently, I think they mostly did events and dance stuff rather than being a real "band". He's kind of a flighty and weird dude and I get the impression that he doesn't really need to work for money, he just does poo poo for the fun of it. As for how popular he is, I only have one Japanese friend, when we had a conversation about NYE her family apparently all watched the big singing show unless Genki Sudo was fighting. Then I showed her the video of him kicking the weird American dojo guys in the nuts.

I want to see the man who produces music and sings and dances kick american dojo dudes in the nuts. Also the hierarchy for things that are big in japan is: taylor swift, people who were on tv variety shows last night and are attractive, major idols, people who are on variety shows to be "funny", everyone else fit into that last category. Judging how many people know something even the least bit fringe is hard to do since the japanese ideal for pop culture consumption is to only publicly admit to knowing the most general or obviously popular thing in the eternal struggle to be erm.. a normal person.
