Is Spoony going to be this thread's "That reviewer that shall not be named"? Its ok to talk about him guys, he isn't a pedophile anime.

The interview with Oin's actor was great but it hammered home just how unfixable the movies are. It doesn't matter how much you edit out to make one four hour film if the main cast got increasingly sidelined as production went on. It's not just a matter of the good stuff getting buried, but of the emotional core getting overruled by the need for action scenes.

I think they might’ve been salvageable if they didn’t throw everything away and pushed GDT out at the last second and made three movies for the sake of accounting. Once they did that they had a product that inherently was built around compromises engineered to improve revenue, not to make a better film, and it could only go downhill from there.

Ellis’ video is amazing tho and the ending is phenomenal.

Yeah. Still, I feel like the first movie is the closest to good: it focuses on Bilbo and the Dwarves, it has songs, and aside from cutting some songs and having a few way-too-long actions cenes it's mostly a good adaptation.

It's from movie 2 onward I felt betrayed.

(Why the gently caress didn't they have the elf sing when they arrive at Rivendell? Why the Goblin Town song last only a few seconds?)

I'll be honest and say that I'm probably a bad person to judge the Hobbit because I found the book to be dreadfully dull and I haven't seen nor am I interested in LOTR. I saw the first two Hobbit films and thought they were passable but mediocre and didn't bother to see the third one. So discovering that the prevailing opinion is that the Hobbit films weren't good surprised me a little because I thought I was an outlier in not really enjoying them.

I think a big chunk of the "Lalala, no talking about Spoony!" sentiment comes from SA's historical inability to not be creepy about Spoony. He's always been an epicenter for drama and there was a time where PYF had a whole thread dedicated to his minute-by-minute downward spiral. The caution this thread takes towards mentioning him is warranted.

As for the video, that was a good rundown on Spoony's career. I was never a big Spoony fan but I was occasionally interested in his work, or just privy to the drama by proximity by other creators. I'm also looking forward to Fredrik reading up on the Channel Awesome controversy.

I was wondering if the YouTube offices shooting was going to come up.

As of last night, I've heard the motives were (tossing out the nutbar conspiracy theorists) either a domestic situation (woman vs. [ex]-bf), or an unstable person angry at YouTube restriction her videos (which is just a single worm ontop of a very, very large can of iceberg worms).

The latest NYT articles seems to indicate the latter.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/03/technology/youtube-shooting-suspect-headquarters.html

*e* okay, I know it's a serious article and all, but...

quote:

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital received three patients

That's gotta sting in the old corporate pride a bit.

quote:

Many employees said they had initially thought the episode was a fire drill. Others said they had run when people started shouting that there was a shooter. Two hours after the attack, YouTube employees, including Susan Wojcicki, the chief executive, continued to stream slowly down the hill, away from the office.

0_0 You guys thought it was a fire drill, and it took over TWO HOURS to evacuate?

quote:

Zach Vorhies, 37, a senior software engineer at YouTube ... had been sitting at his desk when the fire alarm went off. He grabbed his electric skateboard and headed for a back exit

Because of-loving-course there's a Google engineer named "Zach" who rides an electric skateboard.

quote:

About 25 feet away from the victim, he said, a man was shouting, “Come at me!” Mr. Vorhies thought the man was the attacker, but he did not see a gun and said it was possible that the man had actually “been taunting the shooter.”

>_<

1) OF-loving-COURSE someone at Google would try to bring memes to a gunfight.
2) Yes, I will acknowledge whoever was doing that might have been trying to distract the gunner and draw fire from others and that's a heroic move
3) Unless he was just taunting the shooter in which case >_< x2
4) This right here is why "a good guy with a gun" will result in disaster. If Zach had a handgun instead of an electric skateboard, and in the fear&confusion of the moment-- when he thought the shouty-man was the attacker-- he would have opened fire. On the wrong person. Then gotten himself killed by either a) the actual gunner b) the police c) some OTHER "good guy with a gun" who just saw Zach gun down a co-worker. Repeat for that guy.

Both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 I think have the same story issue where you ask, "What are the villains' goals?", and you can't get a real definite answer. The Enclave wanted the water purifier in Fallout 3 for..some reason (you can say FEV, but have issues with that point). In Fallout 4, the 'villain' I felt was Father and the Institute, but I never really got a clear idea of what their goal was in my playthrough. I think you have to specifically side with them to figure out what they plan to do (which I think was nuke the wasteland and repopulate it with synths or something).

Fallout 3 felt like they gave random different people responsibility for each area; you had a Lovecraftian homage, you had sci-fi short stories in vault form, you had family drama, political humor etc. depending on which are you went to. They weren't deep, they didn't service the main plot in any way but they were fun short stories in location format. The main theme was muddled but along the way exploring you got some fun little things. I didn't care about the main plot (I found the dad by accident) but at least exploring meant something.

Fallout 4 most of that was replaced with "quirky area where whatever happens ends as soon as you're spotted and they try and kill you". There were a few exceptions, but most of it was just set dressing for the next shootout. If they'd added a cohesive and compelling plot on top of that it'd be a reasonable tradeoff, but FO4 gave us neither. I pretty much gave up on the game when I got to the robot racetrack and after trying various things I finally went to gamefaqs and the answer was "basically once you're discovered they fight you".

I think that's kinda just Bethesda's style. They really want you to be able to cruise through all the content everywhere at your own pace, and the easiest way to facilitate that is to just design everything isolated from everything else. It works fine enough in a high fantasy setting, but FO1 and 2 (and NV) are pretty fundamentally about society and social organization so that fractured way they do things really sticks out in 3 and 4

That's exactly what did happen with Fallout 3 and 4 with regards to each zone feeling different. Todd Howard has gone on record saying that designers approach him with ideas on certain areas and he signs off on them with a carte blanche. So each person goes to Todd and then back to their own project. The trouble is that the connection only goes to Todd and not to other developers, and Todd seems pretty notorious for not being able to maintain consistency between his dev groups. So while you have a wealth of creativity you lack a consistency of quality and cohesiveness because Todd doesn't want to step on someone's toes but then these groups don't talk to each other. So you end up with one area being really well done right next to another area that was half-assed with no explanation for why they are right next door to one another.

It's not as bad in fallout 4 since thy tried to make some interconnected zones with the various raider bases, but the quality swing is still in full effect.

Bethesda's design ethos seems like Valve's "work on whatever you want" approach except with even less oversight or quality assurance.
