It's an onomatopoeia for laughing in the same way that 'fufufu' is. 'ke' is supposed to supposed to sound like someone stifling a laugh with their tongue. Incidentally it irrationally annoys me people say it as 'kek kek kek' when the way it's written in hangul is ㅋ, which sounds more like 'key ook'.

Honestly, Mishima's character is really sad to me. He seems like a kid who desperately wants to be cool and good and has the potential to be cool and good, but nobody actually taught him how to be cool and good. As a result, he's just constantly loving up, doesn't understand what he's doing wrong, and resents the world because nobody explained how to be a better person. If someone sat him down and drilled some basic social concepts into him he wouldn't be nearly as bad, but because he's already such a lovely dweeb he's easy to hate and it's unlikely anyone would want to spend the time cleaning up his lovely character.

I actually kind of like Mishima, sure he makes terrible decisions and all. But he's trying so hard to be something, anything at all, that I can't help but feel really sorry for him and wish there were options to actually sit him down and make him listen to why he's doing this the wrong way.

Someone said to me once that Mishima was better than Yusuke and this scene on top of everything else made me question their tastes and yes I'm keeping what happened with Yusuke in mind.

I think Yusuke reads as being somewhere on the spectrum which excuses somewhat his past behavior. Mishima is just a dumb but normal kid with zero social skills, it's a lot easier to get annoyed by him.

Link and similar mechanics in a lot of video games (NWN2's influence system comes to mind especially with Qara), is with some exceptions, you're pretty much suppose to pat their rear end even if they're shady, being stupid, or it's outright wrong or else you're The Bad Guy. Some of it is programming limitations, but it can be frustrating to not go 'hey, stop doing the thing it's creepy' and having it actually matter.

This is a good way of putting it. Mishima knows he's a loser and so he thinks going all-out with this will validate his sense of self-worth. He's actually fairly realistic, and you've probably met someone like him in real life. I actually feel really bad for Mishima, especially here where you can see he's starting to lose it a little bit. Between Kamoshida's abuse and the assholes we met a couple of updates ago (and I can't remember if it's ever explicitly stated how long they've been making fun of /harassing him) but he's been getting it from both sides at school where he's expected to grin and bear it. Combine that with a(n implied) lack of actual friends and the internet as his hobby? Well, you can see where that path is is heading and it's nowhere good.

It's more lot of the links is 'nod and follow along' - like the Qara example, the way to maximize her influence is to keep telling her it's okay to set fire to everything that remotely piss her off or that it's good she refuses to control her magic. About the only S. Link I can think of where it's *not* a good idea to follow the other person's whims on a mechanical/optimal standpoint is Ai's S.Link in P4 where refusing to date her early on in the link is better.

While this is all true... one of the things I should mention at this juncture is that Mishima is not actually one of the links your talking about, as increasing his Link is not dependent on your responses to him in conversation. The thing that increases moon levels is fulfilling the quests in Mementos, that's it; just do that and the level will increase every time you talk to him. And I really like that- while I don't know if I would go so far as to say that anyone planned it to this degree, his link not being dependent on your responses really fits nicely with Mishima and his story. One, it paints him favorably, because it shows that the thing he really cares about is helping people, above how you treat him, and two... well, it allows you to actually speak your mind without fear of reprisal. Because here's thine thing: I really like Mishima and his link, but... you guys aren't wrong in what you've said about him. He is boring, he is annoying, he is unhealthily obsessed with all of this, and frightfully clingy- yes he's been hurt by his experiences, but that doesn't change that for most of his link, he's... really not all that much fun to be around. (Also, I personally enjoy that we're getting to this part of his Link now, at a part when we're experiencing similar weirdness with everyone wanting to deal with some fast-food magnate out of the blue, and nobody on our team really questioning this; good parallel, that.) But as other people have said, it makes sense that he feels this way, and it fits extremely well with his assigned arcana: the Moon is the card of doubt and deception, and is thought to actually be the card the most parallels the shadow self as Jung imagined it. One of the interpretations of it in a reading is how the way forward in life can be obscured by our feelings, how our fears and anxieties can twist and warp our vision of ourselves and our priorities. Mishima is, at heart, a good kid who means well, but his fear that his might be a nothing, a "zero," just as his bullies have said, is corrupting those good intentions, turning a genuine desire to help into a desire for vindication, a desire to be known and rewarded, praised as a hero. The way this is presented, to me, actually strikes the balance between being somewhat sad to watch, and also, being kinda pathetic as well.

Socially awkward, intensely focused on his interests, sometimes does odd things for reasons that make sense to him but not other people, etc.That and his bad behavior is 99% confined to his intro dungeon(which doesn't excuse it, but it minimizes the damage), after which he's just weird-but-harmless comic relief, whereas Mishima is all terrible all the time. Yes, Mishima has some mitigating factors from abuse by Kamoshida/general bullying, and it's obvious his path is going to some bad places unless someone intervenes, but that doesn't make him any more tolerable to be around. Just like some terrible people in real life!
