I've been ignoring Canadian politics since moving to the US, but it's amazing to check in and see that the federal Conservatives might very well take power in the next election. As if the decade under Harper wasn't enough to banish them for a generation. I dislike the Liberals but at least they implemented a carbon tax and it would be a shame if that were repealed.

My perspective has gotten warped living amongst reactionaries, I read that same poll and thought that's pretty great. Only 30%!

Also for reference in one of the interviews as part of the interminable US visa process the questioner asked about my prior NDP party membership, and specifically wanted to know if they were Communists or sponsored terrorism. I said no, but I did wonder whether I was about to be outed as a secret socialist.

I know in Ontario on top of a public places ban, there's some pushing to ban it from rental units both inside and on balconies since it can still end up getting into other units. I can understand wanting to limit it from public places but it also seems absurd and unsafe to basically expect people to go to designated location to get high. Imagine if you were only allowed to drink at a bar.

For a while I lived in an apartment building next to a pair of weedlords (who I think were actually dealing, considering the occasional guy knocking on the door for loving ever and the one time the cops were waiting in the stairwell for someone to approach the door) and not being able to have my windows open all summer long without smelling that poo poo kinda sucked.

I don’t want to smell it, but I recognize that it’s not my right to be free of all annoyances in a public space. Why are people so loving fragile? Yes, it smells bad. loving deal with it; you’ll be okay if you’re briefly annoyed!

It's an intoxicant, I don't really see an issue with no allowing it to be consumed in public places. You are allowed to start chugging a beer while walking down the sidewalk why should a joint be different? If it's really that much of a burden I'm sure the laws will loosen up over the next 10 years on where/when you can consume pot.

I can't imagine that's pleasant but it seems like a pretty big hazard to basically tell everyone wants to get high to commute to and fro, or to do stupid poo poo to try to hide the fact they're doing it.

There's already pretty significant rules on where you can smoke cigarettes (ie not close to any building entrance) - I don't understand why smoking weed can't fall under the same restrictions.

That’s a bad restriction too, and it only exists so the police can harass homeless people and addicts.

If it were about solving an actual problem, it would be a violation that could only be added on to another charge like drunk and disorderly.

I think the problem is when nothing is seen as "your own air."

How do you feel about vaping? There's a lot of stigma around it but it seems considerably less of a problem for everyone else - but from what I understand it tends to get lumped under the same rules.

I appreciate vapers are pumping out marginally less carcinogenic compounds, but city air is bad enough and their contribution is not welcome. Plus the idea is to make a marijuana public smoking ban cast as wide a net as possible to cover anything that might even plausibly allow the inhalation of THC, so as to effectively make all forms of smoking in public illegal. People can get a nicotine patch if they're desperate.

Related I really enjoyed the smoker's whining in this article about a tobacco ban in a Montreal suburb:

CBC posted:

Since smoking in public places is allowed in Canada, Bonnie Feigenbaum, a former town councillor, questioned if the restriction is just.

"I don't think you should be forbidden from doing something legal in the town," she said.
...
"The individual walking their dog at 11:30 at night, smoking a cigar shouldn't be subject to a fine of up to $1,500," he said.

"The individual walking down the wrong side of Côte-St-Luc Road is liable for a ticket," said Budning.
How dare the municipality crack down on my filthy degenerate habit!

This makes sense to me, my dad's a smoker and while he's far more considerate (only after years of telling him to cut it out, but I digress) now than he was in the past, it's still a disgusting habit that ruins spaces around him that other people have to use. I vape a ton of weed but a)I do it in my own space where I'm not bothering anybody and b) I have no problem being told to go outside to do it in public

Of course they'll probably just make a bunch of laws that they can use to harass poor people and minorities but I mean in theory this poo poo shouldn't be complex

You have no problem with being told to go outside? Well, pity that all the new bylaws forbid it outside, then!

I think there’s room for reasonable restriction but this goes too far. There is no problem with smoking outside away from doors and air intakes. That’s a completely acceptable compromise.
