a very scummy blockchain company that was listed on NASDAQ got halted today by the SEC because insiders who were issued shares and illegally sold them were trying to get away with $27 million

https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2018-61

quote:

Washington D.C., April 6, 2018 —
The Securities and Exchange Commission has obtained a court order freezing more than $27 million in trading proceeds from allegedly illegal distributions and sales of restricted shares of Longfin Corp. stock involving the company, its CEO, and three other affiliated individuals.

According to a complaint unsealed today in federal court in Manhattan, shortly after Longfin began trading on NASDAQ and announced the acquisition of a purported cryptocurrency business, its stock price rose dramatically and its market capitalization exceeded $3 billion. The SEC alleges that Amro Izzelden “Andy” Altahawi, Dorababu Penumarthi, and Suresh Tammineedi then illegally sold large blocks of their restricted Longfin shares to the public while the stock price was highly elevated. Through their sales, Altahawi, Penumarthi, and Tammineedi collectively reaped more than $27 million in profits.

According to the SEC’s complaint, Longfin’s founding CEO and controlling shareholder, Venkata Meenavalli, caused the company to issue more than two million unregistered, restricted shares to Altahawi, who was the corporate secretary and a director of Longfin, and tens of thousands of restricted shares to two other affiliated individuals, Penumarthi and Tammineedi, who were allegedly acting as nominees for Meenavalli. The subsequent sales of those restricted shares violated federal securities laws that restrict trading in unregistered shares distributed to company affiliates.

“We acted quickly to prevent more than $27 million in alleged illicit trading profits from being transferred out of the country,” said Robert Cohen, Chief of the SEC Enforcement Division’s Cyber Unit. “Preventing defendants from transferring this money offshore will ensure that these funds remain available as the case continues.”

The SEC’s complaint, which was filed under seal on April 4, charges Longfin, Meenavalli, Altahawi, Penumarthi, and Tammineedi with violating Section 5 of the Securities Act of 1933. The complaint seeks injunctive relief, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, and penalties, among other relief.

The SEC’s continuing investigation is being conducted by Ernesto Amparo, Robert Nesbitt, and Adam B. Gottlieb and supervised by Anita B. Bandy and Mr. Cohen. The litigation is being led by Sarah Heaton Concannon and Kevin Lombardi and supervised by Stephan Schlegelmilch and Cheryl Crumpton.

check out the chart for that stock. ticker is LFIN

it got over $70, down to $8, and back up to $24 in just a few days before it was halted. it was basically a shitcoin on NASDAQ. now imagine this exact thing happening except on totally unregulated exchanges

holy crap 7k lol. so how much money can the average person make daily? I remember at like 9k, people were making a dollar a day after electricity?

I see a lot of mining rigs on my local craigslist. one seems to indicate desperation but counters it with "DONT WASTE MY TIME, SERIOUS OFFERS ONLY", and then follows up with "I know a lot about bitcoin because im an engineer, I'm buying a better rig after this".

The thing is the difficulty always increases due to big mining centers expanding and/or upgrading their existing equipment and do things the way they are so often done in China, where it's all about volume and profit margins are razor-thin. If you get a mining rig that's more than like a few months old and are paying anything for electricity, it's pretty much a certainty that you won't earn enough crypto to even cover the cost of the rig and the electricity used.

This had an even funnier application when one mining rig maker "tested" the units which were already very late for shipping out by mining bitcoin for himself, and only sent them a few months later when the mining difficulty had increased enough that the rigs were no longer profitable to operate.

Many Brits Confuse Cryptocurrency with Something Else
The survey has revealed that a great number of British citizens may have an entirely wrong idea about basic crypto-related terms. It shows that despite the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies, some Brits may still be completely unaware of their existence.

It is worth noting that when british people are presented with a survey with 4 options to choose from and one of the answers is really dumb (like 'pull chain toilet tank') then that is what they will pick. 40% of people weren't taking it at all seriously.

I started mining gridcoin today. It'll cost me a few bucks per month but I'll be focusing processing power to help with protein folding and also something about spinning pulsars.I'm a nocoiner so I can afford to just toss money at whatever for fun instead of worrying about my capital gains and my butt being worthless.

It was -25 this morning. I can use some warmth. And I disagree, I don't like donating money as it gets misappropriated constantly. By donating processing, I'm giving them the tools themselves.

this is the finance conspiracy theories of bitcoin sneaking into your blockchain charity.

speaking as someone with a long history of involvement in small charities - really, everyone's just doing their best, and if you want to donate to a charity just trust them to do useful things with it or don't. tied donations are a major, major pain in the arse and really super bad for efficiency 'cos they get blown just on the effort to keep them separate.
