Count Jackula went off the deep end REALLY loving quickly and got turfed from Channel Awesome for being a legit crazy person. Literally the last video he uploaded on the site before he got bounced had a giant swastika on the thumbnail with no context. And the one that preceded that one was "Yeah, Carrie Fisher's dead, but HOLY gently caress I jacked off a lot to Slave Leia from Return of the Jedi as a kid." So yeah, I don't care what Count Jackula has to say about literally anything.

DoctorGonzo1969 posted:I think you mean Count Jackula, right? I watched a couple of his videos, I thought he was alright until I heard of him blasting Dan Olson for the Ghostbusters reboot controversy. Something about Dan calling James Rolfe a misogynist and Jackula getting pissed off about it. I remember he'd left the day after going on some Twitter tirade about how him and Horror Guru were the only two people on Channel Awesome supporting PewDiePie. Yeah, that's him. He ends his video by saying that Dan was an underhanded sneak for writing an article about how 8chan was full of child pornography, because he was really going after gamergate but did it by trying to take away their website instead of just criticizing them openly. He also repeats the 4chan talking point of Dan being a pedophile for writing an article about 8chan being full of child pornography. He seems like an incredibly bitter person who has never forgotten a single slight, no matter how small or imagined. It's just more validation for the observation that people who make a point of saying that they don't do drama are in fact hugely toxic people who cause all their own problems.

Just checked, and there are currently 18 people listed on the site as producers (technically there should be no more than 17, because Nash announced he's leaving). We're getting close to a third left of the amount of people on the site when this whole thing started.

Superbunnyhop did (another?) VR video, and it's shockingly positive coming from him. Price ranges are gonna have to fall way, way down for that stuff to be more than something that exists out there, I guess for me though.

Part of what helps is just getting something out that can be mass-produced, so as to streamline production on (and improve upon) the kinds of parts that weren't available cheaply even just a few years ago. There's also a lot of disparate technologies that're only just now starting to be brought together like foveated rendering and the Vive's wireless adapter. Even the Vive Pro's just a glorified dev kit for things like the pass-through cameras.

Two comments: 1) They're down 25k subscribers. Which isn't much, compared to their 1M+ subscribers, but that's more subscribers lost than most content creators will see in their lifetime. And it's the only time in-- forever?-- the subscriber count has gone down. 2) Tony Goldmark leaving. Read his tweet thread and boy oh boy did it miss the point. His grievance boils down to "SOME of the stuff looks bad, I guess. I was going to stay, but when I asked management for a personal response, they didn't send one right away. How DARE they do something to snub ME? That's way over the line. I'm leaving. But still, all those #ChangeTheChannel people who just want to watch the channel burn, gently caress 'em." So Tony, if you were so hard up for an apology, are you going to offer one for calling Allison (and others) a paraphrased "crazy bitch who is only doing this because she has some sort of grudge". Tony?

Of note: #ChangeTheChannel has unlinked and disavowed the Fan Document. When I read it, there were, I dunno, five sketchy stories. Mostly unsubstantiated fan whinging like "one time I met Rob at a convention and he was rude to me". Or another was "I met Doug and I felt like he didn't appreciate me enough." And one about producers-- I dunno, stealing booze from Doug's bar? I haven't looked at it since, but it just continued to slide downhill from there. My guess is that it's now the text equiv of that "TGWTG EXPOSED" image that gets passed around.

So far today, 11 people have left Channel Awesome. Brandon Tenold actually tweeted that he'd left too: https://twitter.com/BrandonTenold/status/982773513525215232 And Ask Lovecraft posted on his Facebook about leaving: https://www.facebook.com/AskLovecraft/videos/1717117571687187/ He'd been publicly frustrated with the site's lack of response and I recall he'd said something about refusing to upload his videos to the site until they gave a response. Seems he finally got fed up enough to leave officially. Shaun K also left: https://twitter.com/bigred_13/status/982724305535434752 In addition to these three, we've had: The Last Angry Geek, Rocked Reviews, Il Neige, Sursum Ursa, The Dom, Calluna, Some Jerk with a Camera, and Nash. That's 11 people who have all left. Ryan Molina of Battle Geek Plus has also said he was considering leaving as well: https://twitter.com/ThatRyanMolina/status/982705122529558529

So, what are the chances that CA holds another huge talent-pickup? Will they get anyone? Will the site just be full of naieve 15-year olds who don't have the real-world experience or maturity to steer clear of a bad deal-- because EXPOSURE IS AWESOME and they'll be the next $1,000,000 You Tube Star?

They’ll probably just revert to being a youtube channel doing Doug videos. They still seem to have tons of money to throw away, and they don’t seem to care about anyone else featured on the site. And they don’t care about video quality or learning or growing in any way. They’re in a kind of George Lucas circa 1998 situation, just doing a garbage passion project for reasons only they understand. I wonder if so many people left today because they gave some kind of crazy ultimatum.

Honestly it makes me a bit skeptical because it makes him sound like some guy who's really into cryptocurrency or some other tech nerd craze where he's so besotted by the rhetoric of revolution surrounding it I'm not sure if he's really reliable on this subject or being particularly objective.

SteelMentor posted:$5 Some Jerk only left when he realised they weren't doing the 10th Anniversary special any more. It seems like cancelling the Anniversary was at least partially a reason for a bunch of producers. Nash and Calluna both said that they had considered staying until the special was finished, the project being cancelled last minute was just an extra reason to leave now. I get that expecting CA to be better about communication now was a bit of a stretch, but you'd think they would want to do something, ANYTHING, to try and keep their new people from leaving. Now it just shows that they don't really care for their new talent, and will probably keep them from being able to find any new people, if they even decide to try and find new content creators. At this point, I think they'll wait until they drop below 10 producers, and just shut down the site to focus entirely on the YouTube channel. Thinking on it, it's probably for the best they don't bother trying to find new talent or patch things over. They've proven they're poo poo at management at any level, so cutting ties with other producers and going it alone with just Doug and whatever cast his show needs seems like the logical endpoint.
