Oh, the ending! The High Five’s van crashes into the stacks, followed by Sorrento. The crowd gathers around him because they know he blew up the stack earlier, but he wards them off with a gun. Somehow nobody else in the whole ghetto has a gun. He whips open the door and prepares to shoot Wade, but sees that he has the egg. He instantly has a change of heart and surrenders to the police. I’m not kidding.

So the biggest change the film makes is the challenges. First, there's only one challenge per key (whereas the book has separate keys and gates and the gates can have two or three separate challenges at each) and the clue for each key simply leads to the next key, which greatly shortens up the film. The first challenge is an unwinnable race through New York City because King Kong always grabs and destroys the winner's vehicle right before the end, and the real solution is to drive backwards at the start to find a hidden passage that leads under the entire race. Someone on Tumblr pointed out how improbable it is that nobody out of the millions of players tried this even once, especially since there's no cost to entry and you can leave the race at any time if you want to bail without dying. The second challenge is a bit more complicated to access. Instead of Anorak's Almanac, Halliday's journals are in the form of a huge building in the OASIS that features 3D recordings of important moments in his life from his journals (which serves as an excuse to get Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg acting more), with the Curator (secretly Og's avatar) helping people find what they're looking for. It also has copies of all the movies and video games he considered important in his life. The clue is a moment he went on a date with Kira before she married Og, where she wanted to go dancing but he took her to the movies instead. Because the clue is a creator who hates his own creation and Stephen King hated the film adaptation, you need to go to the Curator and select The Shining (is there some special requirement where you need to know why you're picking it from Og, or does selecting the movie just activate the challenge anyway?). Then you have 5 minutes to get through the Overlook Hotel and find Kira dancing with zombies in the ballroom and do a zombie platforming segment to reach her. The third challenge is just an Atari 2600 in a castle on Planet Doom, with a list of every game Halliday played. You need to pick Adventure and find the world's first Easter egg. If you pick the wrong game or beat Adventure normally instead of getting the Easter egg, your avatar is killed instantly. Once you get to the egg, Anorak offers you a contract to sign. However, you need to read the contract, recognize it as the one he used to make Og sign over his shares of GSS, and reject it. Since Halliday is still existent as an AI in the system, you need to avoid making his biggest mistake in order to finally win the competition. One other change the film makes that actually causes a bit of a problem is that it moves the Distracted Globe party to the beginning of the movie, right after getting the Copper Key. It's not Og's birthday, just Art3mis misinterpreting a clue and taking Wade out dancing. They get super flirty and Wade tells her his real name and says that he loves her. While she's supposed to be freaking out because she's secretly part of some anti-IOI resistance (which appears in the real world for two scenes before IOI bursts in and arrests them all) and he's jeopardizing her mission, it makes Wade look even more like a goober because this is their first date. The only interactions he's had with her before were meeting her in the race, getting Aech to fix her bike after she saved her from dying (and she complains that a "real gunter would risk everything" so he shouldn't have saved her because what), and going to find a clue with her. He just instantly professes his love without any kind of buildup. Any reasonable girl would freak out. But this ends up not mattering because they meet in the real world like a day or two later, and he immediately talks to her about how she's still beautiful despite her birthmark and they start tenderly touching each other as if she's also attracted to him despite looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy with glasses and being completely unable to talk to a girl.

If you want a reference that not everyone would get, during his intro scene Aech is seen dual-wielding the rail guns from Eraser and Art3mis may use the Lawgiver II from the 1995 Judge Dredd. Wade uses a rocket launcher in the final battle that I swear I recognize, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. Might have been from Halo? I know Aech uses an MA5B before getting the rail guns.

WRT OASIS control, there is work being done to put ultrasonic or similar depth sensors, or even cameras, in gloves and headsets to get partial returns and infer body position. It’s super clumsy so far, of course.

My wife and I went to see Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and for most of the movie I was not having a good time. Then Lateef Crowder showed up as one of the vampire aristocrats who are the baddies in that movie. He's a capoeira guy who has done some pretty sick fight scenes so I perked up, thinking there would maybe be a capoeira fight scene in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. Then I calmed down because I realized it would be silly to have a capoeira scene out of nowhere in a Twilight movie, they probably just cast him because he's a handsome dude who looks good in vampire robes. THEN the vampire family who are the goodies in that movie were assembling a bunch of their vampire friends to help them out when the final throwdown with the baddies happened, and two of their friends were Brazilian shaman vampires and Brazil is where capoeira comes from. So then I got super excited because we would definitely be getting a sick-rear end vampire capoeira fight scene in the final throwdown. Then when the final throwdown happened Lateef Crowder got bitten by a werewolf in the first twenty seconds and died. That's the most ripped-off I've ever felt in a movie, but if someone dragged me to Ready Player One and I saw a character wave a pulse rifle around and then they fired it and it just went pewpew or whatever, it'd come close. Thank you for reading, here are some Lateef Crowder fight scenes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqGDrROPSlc

I like how in a RPO thread I’ve learned yet another reason the entire Twilight franchise is terrible. P.S.: the way Meyer describes vampires in the books leaves them horrifically pale, including the ones who are native Brazilians, then you remember how there’s a bit in The Book of Mormon how people will be made “white and delightsome” in heaven and welp. As for having to play Adventure, I can only think back to the Freelance Astronaut’s Let’s Play of it, including pipes! insistence on singing the Brick House baseline the whole time. King Kong: millions of players yet no one ever considered how to fool King Kong by distraction, or ditched a vehicle for King Kong himself and rode the giant ape to glory, or even somehow mucked with the code to invoke 1986’s King Kong Lives and fell old banana breath with a literal broken heart!

It doesn't seem to cost anything to run the race (except what you expend for fuel, repairs, etc.) and you can leave whenever even if you don't finish, so you'd think after the first thousand people you'd see everyone trying whatever the hell they want that doesn't get them killed.

He can't pick them up and fling them that fast, the animation we saw doesn't have the speed for that. Does he just stick his hand on the track blocking the entire track? And then also stick his rear end on there when some of the cars in the stream start jumping higher than a Kong-hand? I’m picturing a really smug King Kong just sitting in the middle of narrow street, leaning against one building, feet just narrowly not ripping the awning they’re balanced on across the road, blithely ignoring engines revving and honking while he sips on a water tower’s worth of Ecto Cooler. People would attempt to emulate this on other worlds to where “Kong blocking” would be a frustrating OASIS meme. Why is every silly idea we come up with more fun than a single idea Kline managed?

Because Kline thinks that playing a lich in a lovely arcade game is the height of tension or that references are the height of comedy. It also doesn't help that his understanding of geek culture and the internet tapered off at the early 2000s.

I think it's more like the creativity of nerds hunting easter eggs or speedrunning stuff is so beyond the pale that most audiences wouldn't get it. Like players wouldn't bother with the search or platforming in the Overlook because it's much faster to go to a corner 40 feet from the entrance and walk diagonally backwards into it while repeatedly crouching since you'll phase out of the level bounds and the game corrects by dropping you at the nearest valid coordinates which happens to be the platform Kira is on. That's not to say Kline would've thought of anything like that, but that's why you don't get tidbits like that in the movie.

It is kinda weird that he didn't make any reference to Nintendo though. Maybe it's because he was in his mid-teens when the NES came out but it was a much bigger deal during the 80s than the 2600 was. There was actually a particularly painful reference when Wade was listing off all the poo poo that he (and of course Cline) likes and he just randomly drops Beds are Burning by Midnight Oil into it. That actually made me hyper focus on that reference because there's no loving way that he knows what that song is all about let alone any of their discography. At the very least he could have made a joke about the frontman being a poo poo politician but nope.

I'm fairly certain that Cline doesn't like/care about any video games made after the big crash of '83. This is a man who got so hyped up over the Atari Landfill being found that he filmed himself driving across country to get there, but doesn't mention Nintendo once in his book of 80s nostalgia.

The only time I'm aware of that Cline mentioned a Nintendo thing was that snippet from Armada someone posted where he namedropped Shigeru Miyamoto, and that mostly just established that he has no loving idea who Shigeru Miyamoto is

I looked at the full list of references in the book. There's apparently one reference to Donkey Kong early in the book. The most recent game the book mentions is Super Smash TV from 1992. The most recent fiction in general is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from 2008, which is just thrown in as a reference to being crap.

Is there any relevance to a song about forced relocation of natives in order to do nuclear weapon testing, to anything in this book?
