Still, it never fails to put a smile on my face when conservatives talk about California like it's some liberal-themed cyberpunk apocalypse. Like in Santa Rosa our biggest problems are rebuilding after the fires and having way too loving many craft brewpubs, and the areas that actually have problems have basically nothing to do with immigration, so I can't imagine what California looks like in the fevered imaginations of these chud weirdos. I've been to southern California a couple times and maybe it's just bias but it always felt a lot like a mix of Orlando and Miami to me. Just a lot of Florida feeling. You know, except for mountains and poo poo.

Southern California is awesome and traffic sucks if you don't have the freedom to live near work. The DMV has far worse traffic IMHO. Also, to make up for long distances and traffic CHIPs are pretty chill about speeding in my experience.

I am lucky in that I have the rare SoCal commute that is 45 miles and 45 minutes. I live in South Orange County and work in North San Diego, so my drive takes me down the coast through Camp Pendleton, where there is no traffic at all. I get to cruise along the ocean at 75 mph, watching the sunrise/sunset as attack helicopters and V22 Ospreys fly around looking badass. I drive a convertible just to take advantage of my commute.

I've never been to LA but my impression has always been that the problem is its really sprawled out and there's not much in the way of good public transportation. Like driving in NYC or Chicago or DC or Philly kind of sucks but in every one of those cities I've been able to navigate public transit much easier. Same in London, Toronto, or Paris. I've always got the sense that LA doesn't have that option as well which is why it has its reputation. And even with those cities it gets sketchier when you start venturing out into the broader metro area and LA seems to have a much wider scope like that. It's absolutely fantastic (other than the rent being obscene, but welcome to SoCal).

If I had to point to some uniquely Californian problems, I'd probably say it's rampant NIMBYism and the overuse of the referendum process to pass pointless bullshit like Prop 65 and FYGM trash like Prop 13. QFT I live in West LA within a 5 minute walk of a train station. Unfortunately my work location/time changes constantly so I have to drive, but I take public transit whenever possible (we've mostly ditched the cars on the weekends). When I do drive my commute is pretty reliably within an hour unless I'm going someplace really far off. Rent sucks, it's true, but I wouldn't trade it for anywhere else. The diversity of people, cultures, lifestyles, environment, opportunities, etc. can't really be matched by anywhere I've been.

I stand corrected. Maybe the problem is that LA is a common spot for people relocating from Middle America and they just don't know how to navigate public transit? You get a lot of that in New York even from just Bridge and Tunnel people. Which is mostly what I kind of figured LA's "problem" was. People from suburbs and outer boroughs who have long commutes.

My issue with LA and most of california vs places like New York is that being so spread out means that you don't get to have many 24 hour places. One thing I do know about LA is that a lot of the suburbs deliberately tried to limit access via public transportation (to keep out the Filthy Poors), and now years later the residents are shocked and baffled that it's really hard to get anywhere. We have the same problem here in the North Bay, you have to take the ferry between SF and San Rafael because Mill Valley (my hometown  ) didn't want BART bringing 'undesirables' or whatever through their pristine yuppie paradise.

Basically someone ( was it Alternate Nu?) linked Alan Watts earlier this weekend for a 1 minute sample of what turned out to be a 4 and a half hour recording and I was stuck on Saturday shifting computers around on SANs so I just sat and listened to him lecture for a good part of the day and it reminded me of why I studied Taoism in the first place. One of the things he talks about in the collection is how there are at least three methods of Natural order to the human condition, the western Original Sin, the "drama" as considered in Hinduism measured by the Kaliyuga and the No Thing of the Tao. Since Saturday I've been paying attention to comments about human nature posted in D&D because I have been trying to reason out how my world view differs from my peers and contemporaries, listening to a guy say the things I've come to think independently over 15 years before I was born was a moment of "drat he already did the work for me years ago, if only I had known I could be further along myself." I will try to summarize thusly: For all the evil in the world, it is a minority. People are part of the natural order and wars, chaos and destruction wrought by a minority are horrible scars on our collective souls (or soul, singular, if you ascribe to the third naturalism) but we only have to fail, evil only needs to succeed once for it to be noteworthy. Like security, systems, by their sheer volume are probably not compromised at any given moment but as time passes the time they will be breached or evil will be wrought approaches 1. Unchallenged, the world could take a shape of naturally occurring evil, but only if the fight is given up.
