Fartbox posted:Well, it appears to be a bear. Just a very angry, agile bear with a clear mission to kill people. Possibly fueled by demonic angst. They also shot it with a cannon and it survived Spoilers for legitimately obtained episodes released ahead of schedule: I'm no bear-ologist but I'm pretty sure the head doesn't look right. Then again the CGI for it is pretty bad so I can't be sure what the intention is. Not having read the book, my guess is some kinda spirit bear that's out of control because Lady Silence couldn't go through with cutting out her own tongue.

they literally name the loving thing as a force of nature, something beyond, in the shaman's death scene with lady silence.

I have enjoyed how they are cleaving more realistically. The bear dragging 'lil Buddy to the firepit was probably the silliest part, and even that isn't out of the realm of the possible. I mean, I think it is pretty clear they are going to go in an increasingly supernatural direction as the show wears on, but I wouldn't be sorry if it maintained this level of campiness and tried to tell a mostly realistic tale with one terrifyingly intelligent bear. If they had left out the bit with it dropping off the seal, one could almost imagine the bear was starving and going mad as it tried to stalk and eat some sailors. The actors certainly don't seem to realize they are in a horror series, yet. I loved the beat after Sir John berates Crozier, and you can see Crozier struggle to come up with better words, or maybe even a retaliatory insult. That was an amazingly well-performed scene with two phenomenal actors!

In the book they deal with Tuunbaq in a very...British way. No lovecraftian losing your mind and babbling like a loonie. No gothic "hair turns white and you go mad." Evil spirit bear? Well by God you Hold Fast with a stiff upper lip.

Naw, I meant that it would have been very easy to write the parts as campy caricatures, but I think they have done a bang up job of making these fully realized persons.

I like the bit with Sir John's last alive thoughts being Crozier cozying up to his niece. Of all the things to have run through your mind at the time of death and its that.

This show is very good, and while I am glad we got like 5 episodes within a week, I am also sad there won't be anymore maybe until like the 23rd.

Having never read the book I'll be sad if Goodsir dies. Who am I kidding he's definitely either going to go crazy or bites it.

I was going to shell the $5, but I don't have Comcast. If anyone does have AMC Premier, you should be able to binge all 10 episodes, according to what I've read.

Liking the series, but kind of wish they'd gone more man vs nature instead of vs ghost bear. The scenes where they're experiencing the desolation are my favorites by far. The cairn scene... chilling. They may as well have been on another planet. Other than that, series is good and I wish Sir John and his perfect white stockinged leg was around for more of it.

Bugger me, I find this show to be unbearable to watch. It's not so much the violence, but the implied, always unexpected threat and the creeping claustrophobia of being trapped by the ice. But then, I've spoken to others about this show and none of them find it remotely scary.

I think it would probably be too much if every character wasn't like "well that's what we signed up for, stiff upper lip boyos".

poo poo son, Crozier sure don't gently caress around. Reminds me of the torture scene from 2006 Casino Royale. My guess is that Hickey is the first one to go full cannibal. And the description of the "bear" reminds me of a skinwalker.

May I also add this show makes me want to find out more of the sailor terminology and tech of the era. For example, double steering wheels with one guy in-between them, covered entrances to get below deck, and the whole discussion about what the dog's rank was was tops when I saw a chart somewhere that shows what a mess rankings was back then.

It's a bit earlier obviously, but the whole Aubrey-Maturin novel series (of which Master & Commander is a part, good movie also) is a crash course in all this.
