I like how this shows how the priests dedication to peace isn't a passive decision for them. Out of love for their god they've done their hardest to give up violence, but all of them are violent people by nature. If they weren't, they wouldn't have gone after Mammon to begin with! Living peacefully is an active struggle for them against themselves, hence the ritual self abuse.
