GTA4's 10-year anniversary is coming up, and apparently things are getting weird as some of the music licensing is expiring (mostly Vladivostok FM tunes) and Rockstar has to explicitly patch it out (and will be dropping new music in its place) towards the end of the month.

It's cool that they're replacing it instead of removing/abandoning it entirely.

It's not that Rockstar can't re-license a bunch of the music for the game though right? It's just that they don't want to?

They can just replace one of the channels they're outright removing with the soundtrack to Bully they already own the rights to then. It's a good soundtrack.

They could, but nothing forces the entity they licensed it from to offer the same terms as last time. GTA is a huge cash cow now and they probably asked for a bigger piece of that than Rockstar was willing to give them.

Well they'd have to cut some cheques for those songs and they probably asked for too much.

Licensing is notoriously stupid. You can almost never get something indefinitely, and costs can be astronomical for really dumb things. One of my film profs tried to license a single frame from King Kong (the original B&W film) for a commercial he was working on and they wanted something like 15 grand for it, so they just mocked up a parody of it instead since that was way cheaper to do.

GTA4 just barely registers these days, it's not worth dropping what could easily be a million dollars or more to extend the licenses.

It's especially weird since being on the more modern systems is forcing a more active approach to actually patching it. The same thing happened with Vice City and San Andreas but they only patched the PC version and did reissues of the digital PS2 versions (including on PS4), as well as have strategically-timed mobile versions and, for San Andreas, proper ports of it on PS3/360 where they could have the problem music removed outright.

They did. You can't patch PS2/original Xbox games, but they removed them on PC and later reissues (they had mobile versions and San Andreas also had a proper PS3/360 version) had music removed, including the PS2-on-PS4 versions.

I know Ubisoft has ported the Prince of Persia Trilogy to modern platforms over the years. Anyone remember if they kept the Godsmack in Warrior Within?

Because it pretty much makes the game. You can't have Warrior Within without it.

Yeah, just looked it up. Nothing very good was removed from either one, aside from "Billie Jean". Kinda weird that those two games are loaded with popular bands that should be expensive to license and what gets removed is... Kate Bush?

The other sort-of oddity is that pricing doesn't always make sense. Some of the big-name labels can be agreeable and amenable to something that's more reasonable (and taking an approach of increasing exposure of the band they're representing), while others can basically be trying to get the biggest payout possible and refuse to back down from an unreasonable price tag. Also some rights holders are patent troll-level firms and individuals, they might just own some artist's catalog despite not really being part of the music industry and use it as a source of income to a degree, and there's no guarantee that you're signing your agreement with the same people you did 10 years ago, stuff changes hands.

hopefully it doesn't somehow end up like san andreas where in patching out the music the new port also just kind of hosed over everyone playing because it didn't support old saves and didn't support any mods so people just made a tool to downgrade to the old version anyway

It really hosed them the last time they tried. I also suspect that for a lot of titles they have bigger legal obstacles to clear than Microsoft does, for some reason (e.g. the BC games on XB1 don't respect any region locking on the disc and I'm pretty sure that would be a deal-breaker for Sony).

I still think they should figure something out, though.

This is true too. Backwards Compatibility is such an odd thing to be excited about (and I say that as someone who gets excited about it, like I don't understand the reaction I get) since it's a move that's largely unprofitable for the companies in charge and on the consumer it's like...there is nothing preventing me from plugging my 360 or my original Xbox back in if I had a set mind about it, or picking one up for the price of a new game. I don't even have to do that much for my PS3, since it's already hooked up, I just have to change my HDMI in. Sloth is a hell of a powerful driving force, also why I've re-bought games I have on disc digitally. But Sony's conclusion with how much it cost them with stuff like the PS2 backwards compatibility on PS3's at launch and hacking issues has made them really hinky about it.

PS1/2 backwards compat is totally worthwhile though because getting those systems (which I do own) to connect to any of the monitors tv I have is a pain in the rear end. Well, I still did it, and I have a PS2/saturn still hooked up. But if I didn't have it set up...it would be cool
