As far as drivability goes, Atlanta has the opposite problem. Black people use public transit, and therefore the white suburbs have historically been terrified of it expanding to their area , leaving it underdeveloped. They've been working on it with some new trolleys and such, but it's still a city where you need a car. Traffic isn't quite as bad as LA, but there are still certain spots where the congestion gets really bad during rush hour.

I'd try to avoid going too far out from the city. The further out you go the more likely a suburb turns into a republican hellscape of tacky strip malls, and the longer commute you'll need to do every day.

So, goons in good states, regale me with tales of why I should move to your state.

I know this is a few pages back, but lemme throw Houston at you. I moved here a couple of years ago from the East Coast and love it. Living prices are pretty low, it's got some great museums and parks, and it's incredibly diverse. You'll meet people from all walks of life, with all kinds of views, from all over the world. I know Texas has a reputation for being full of MAGA chuds, and you'll certainly run into a few, but there's a large enough liberal population that the local Dems were competing and winning various elections before the national party pulled its head out of its rear end this year. Snow is so rare that the city pretty much shuts down if they think the roads will ice. I don't use it, but according to everyone the bus system is drat fine. Oh, and the food is fantastic. Not just the Tex-Mex. ALL of the food. And servings are ginormous. I gained like 20 pounds moving here and I don't regret a single bite.

Downsides: summer. Traffic is insane, not just in terms of congestion but also because people drive like crazy. The city floods at least once a year (not Harvey levels, but enough to shut down roads), so check out a land survey before choosing your neighborhood or just stay out of ground floor apartments.

Expect everything to be bigger. That's not a joke, everything really is bigger in Texas.

North Bay is awesome in terms of scenery, things to do if you like being outdoors, etc. But Marin in particular is really not diverse at all and basically full of pretty self centered well off white people who aren't exactly mean or intentionally lovely people, just...self centered in that NIMBY way. Oh and it's impossible to buy a house unless you're rich...even if you're looking at a small house, even if you're looking at a lovely house, because people will pay dumb amounts of money for a lovely house so they can tear it down and build a new nice one.

It's basically, the area is super nice to live in so of course the people who dominate the area are the people who can afford to price out everyone else.

If my wife didn't have to work in San Francisco I think it'd be real interesting to investigate living further north.

Atlanta in the last few years has started having that LA thing where it's rush hour all the time. Used to be traffic trailed off around 9:30am and didn't pick up again until 3 or 4. Now you're as likely to find a traffic jam at 1pm as you are at 5pm. Which sucks.

The irony of mass transit is that suburbs who've embraced it can't get enough. The northeast and northwest counties have fought it tooth and nail, but the immediate north let trains in about 20 years ago and kept expanding from there. And it's the Whitest and richest part too.

The actual cities in most "red" states aren't actually particularly conservative. Like I live in Memphis for example, and Shelby County is blue (as is the county where Nashville is, I think). Not necessarily recommending you move to Memphis, but just using that as an example. I would take the advice of people who haven't actually lived in the South with a grain of salt, and I say this as someone who doesn't even like it here; it's just that a lot of people from the Northeast/West misunderstand that the ideological gap is more rural vs. urban than South vs. Northeast/West. Like, you'd be better off in a place like Memphis than you would a less urban county in New York or Pennsylvania or something.

My wife is from rural PA, whereas I was raised in Southern California. She doesn’t want to live somewhere rural, but she has never come to terms with the housing costs here, so she wants to move somewhere like Boise where we can live in a massive mansion for half of what our townhouse costs. We live in a suburb and our 3br townhome with no yard is worth about 950k as of today, which is ludicrous.

But, man, I have the beach down the street, mountains close enough for a day trip, great road and mountain biking right from my house almost every day of the year, and all of good beer and burritos I can shove into my face.

There are semi-reasonable rents in SoCal if you go to the less gentrified cities. Still going to run you $1500-1800 for a 2br place though. Looking at $2000+ in the cities closer to beaches and with nicer and newer housing. If cheaper rent is an issue I wouldn’t even try to find a 1 br without a roommate because even the cheapest ones will be $1100+ even the shuttles ones you can find. You can live in central CA; it’s a little cheaper, but not that much and you won’t be near much fun stuff. Also our dirty secret is central CA is a Republican hellscape. It just doesn’t matter much for statewide politics because SoCal and the Bay have like 10x as many people as central CA.

To make it slightly political, we really need rent control in this state. Rent has been rising at at least 5% annually for the last decade and that poo poo is unsustainable. Also it seems likely that Orange County can go Democrat for the first time in a long time. I’m not sure how CA got some of the worst loving congresspeople out of one of the chillest states, but seriously Issa, Nunes, and Rohrbacher are all from CA. I’m very excited to see those embarrassments get their asses kicked out the door.

It was harder than I thought trying to find out who might take Ryan's congressional seat, since most of the articles about "replacing" him are about the Speaker position.

That said, there do seem to be some credible GOP candidates, so watching Nehlen run as a flat-out Nazi will only be entertaining until the 14 August primary, but should prove to be a hoot until then.

So far as who might run in the GOP:

https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/2018/04/11/paul-ryan-retirement-news-wisconsin-house-congress-speaker-janesville/506737002/

quote:

On the Republican side, observers say potential candidates for Ryan's seat include Vos; state Rep. Tyler August of Lake Geneva; state Rep. Samantha Kerkman of Salem; state Rep. Amy Loudenbeck of Clinton; and state Sen. Dave Craig, a former Ryan staffer from Big Bend.

Priebus, the former White House chief of staff under Trump, could easily mount a credible campaign if he desired, observers say.

There's some dispute as to the poll numbers for "Iron Stache" Bryce:

quote:

Ryan polling data provided to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel showed the Janesville Republican leading Bryce by 55% to 34% last month. The poll, conducted March 18-20 by Public Opinion Strategies, surveyed 400 likely voters and had a margin of error of 4.9%.

Bryce's campaign released its own poll Wednesday showing he was in a solid position. The December survey of 400 likely voters put Ryan at 46% and Bryce at 40%. That poll also had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9%.

Take the GOP seat, remove the incumbency advantage, and then apply Blue Wave and things could at least be interesting, though still by no means an easy win for the Dems.

I am very, very much looking forward, in Wisconsin and elsewhere, for journalists to be asking GOP candidates their thoughts on Trump.

I'm a born and raised Ohio girl myself, and I've traveled the country pretty extensively (esp when I was an OTR truck driver) and imo Ohio has a distinctive lack of empathy that pervades its culture. It's kind of hard to put your finger on, and it's not very easy to describe until you've spent a little bit of time there, but something is really hosed up in Ohio in a way that the rest of the country doesn't really seem to experience. I've been to individual towns and small far-flung areas that had a similar distinct lack of empathy, but only in Ohio have I seen it so pervasive and all-encompassing.

One impact of this lack-of-empathy is that Ohio is currently mismanaging the opioid crisis substantially worse than pretty much anywhere else, and if anything Ohio's efforts are probably making the problem worse. (for starters Ohio has a stupid law that basically forces all inpatient recovery centers to be capped at 28 beds, as a result there are basically almost no inpatient recovery centers in Ohio that provide treatment for longer than 30 days.) I would not be surprised if once the opioid crisis has been resolved that Ohio will wind up having been the most severely impacted state.

That's kinda a neutral thing at worst. The Trump tax cuts were terrible, but only because of how much they benefit the super rich (and maybe increase the taxes on some middle class people in a few years IIRC?). I'm not exactly going to be shedding tears over anyone who has a house worth more than $500k.

I've seen this framed as a sort of wealth redistribution from the upper/upper-middle class to the super rich, but it doesn't really make sense to think of things that way; the cuts to the super rich could have occurred independent of the increases to some taxes faced by the upper/upper-middle class, and vice versa.
