Snowman_McK posted:[re Conservatives supporting Israel] Depending on your faction, yes. There are a decent chunk of Fundamentalist Christians who believe that Israel plays a key role in prophecies regarding the Apocalypse. I just finished reading a lengthy blog series of the Left Behind series, which while not necessarily the sole authority is a really good look at the popular conception of the Rapture and Tribulation for a Fundamentalist audience. In the books (which are supposedly based on a "literal" reading of the Bible) the kickoff for the whole shebang is that Israel is attacked by Russia and Ethiopia (has to be both because the Bible says "Gog and Magog" attack together) where the nations send all their bombers and nukes to Israel and try to destroy it yet it remains untouched. Then the Rapture happens and the Real True Christians are spirited off the planet. Then once the Antichrist arrives, he'll rebuild the Third Temple in Jerusalem, presumably tearing down the Muslim Dome of the Rock. Then at least in their version a whole bunch of Jews will convert to (their brand of) Christianity since the Bible talks about their still being The Church but the Rapture has already happened so mass-conversion of Israelis is in the cards. So yeah, there are a sizeable number of Christians who believe that the 1948 creation of Israel is a key stepping-stone to Christ's return, and literally support Israel politically because of their role in prophecy. My understanding is that actual Israelis have extremely mixed feelings about this, given that it is not the most pleasant take on Judaism and does not lead to rational decisions, but does play a large role in giving Israel money and weapons. If you're interested in an in-depth takedown (both theological and literary) of the Left Behind series of apocalyptic fiction (which sold like 60 million copies and spawned three movies), evangelical (the good kind) blogger Fred Clark spent a decade doing one-weekly posts where he'd take a few pages from a novel and explain them, eventually covering most of three novels (of like 16 total). If you have even the slightest interest in Fundamentalist Christian thought, at least try reading a post or two of his, it's simply brutal how he calls the writers out for being heretics (and hacks): http://www.patheos.com/blogs/slacktivist/2015/11/05/left-behind-index-the-whole-thing/ That's setting aside Conservatives who support Israel for non-apocalyptic reasons. You also have plenty who support Israel as a buffer against the Muslims, or (very charitably) because they're a developed/democratic/modern state, and in general are seen as being "vaguely like Americans" and thus worthy of our support.

So you get a bunch of realtors, meth-hobbyists, and "ranchers" passing bills like "An Act Preventing Any Municipality (Boise) from regulating Uber and nullifying any local regulations that have already done so."

It is very expensive but I've never had fruit as delicious as the stuff I got from a guy in a truck parked by the road on the big island. Honestly though you can find more expensive regions on the mainland where people shop at boutique farmers markets which cost 3x what stuff costs in HI, the bigger problem is there is gently caress-all for employment in HI and what is there pays poo poo compared to those mainland regions. It would still be in our "if we had to move" list because my job allows me to bring my income with me and my wife is a dietitian with extensive diabetes experience which is sadly in high demand in Hawaii, but leaving friends and being >10hr flight time from family really weighs against it. I've been catching up on the thread skimming as usual with lots of explosive news happening as of late, but I recall some folks a few dozen pages back mentioned the ACA and Congress loving with it. Here's my experience with it. Shortly after they hosed around with the subsidies, my mother suddenly did not have insurance. When she called BCBS to ask wtf, they said her plan no longer existed, and if she wanted the same coverage, it would be $910 per month. She settled on a $750 plan. Her original "affordable" plan after the implementation of ACA was $500. Before the ACA, it was $1100. Keep in mind she has no job right now, and they want seven hundred and fifty dollars for any remotely decent coverage despite that. Otherwise her meds cost upwards of $2000 a month because insulin and other lifesaving drugs are increasing in price exponentially. I want to draw and quarter every single insurance and pharmaceutical company ceo. They are some of the most despicable creatures wearing human skin on this earth.
