I think there's a huge appeal in the idea of authority and power over a fantasy space like Star Citizen. People buy $2,500 JPEGs thinking it will be crewed by the very best, and servile, guild members, who will be more than happy to be on their amazing captain's fancy ship. A lot of these people try and buy friends when they buy JPEGs.

After they've bought into their idea they are inclined to defend it to an extreme degree because it's not just a GAME, it's their ticket out of a lovely real life situation.

Most of this is bullshit. Nearly every single person who is toxic online will only act online. The people who are actually dangerous, will be dangerous with or without social media, and will often act without making a notable online presence.

I think I saw something in there about entitled rage. It's just people bitching about some piece of media they enjoy.

That's all just masturbating yourself as a victim.

Yeah, I've known people who were abrasive, obnoxious and argumentative online, but in "real life" were amazing people. It's really weird to see someone you know as a calm, selfless and amicable person, display a completely different personality in online discussions. At least some of these people I am absolutely sure it's not just some inner bully unleashed by the safety and anonymity of the internet - as they had every opportunity to act like this in real life. I certainly concede that some toxic people are bitter and toxic in real life (some repressed, some not). But a subset of toxic online personas are people who for some reason are extremely handicapped when interacting without body language, in writing, and/or similar reasons. It's quite fascinating, really.

I had a WOW obsessed fucktard threaten to stab me in the eye after I did not award him a drop in a raid about 11-12 years ago. Thought nothing of it until I found out he had gotten my address from another officer in the guild (because no big deal right?). Him and his alcohol addled loser girlfriend then decided to road trip across the country and "visit."

Only through luck and I'm guessing some human decency was I informed prior to them arriving at my doorstep by the same guild officer that gave them my info, after he found out what they were doing. I then confronted the idiot and told him I would file a report with the police did he get just how much poo poo he was in and answered "we are just going to Disney bro!"

From that point on my enjoyment of MMO's ended, haven't played one since. We ended up moving because my now wife was always worried whenever she saw someone loitering around our apartment. Friendships were ended. I'm guessing this is a pretty minor event compared to a lot of the poo poo that goes on nowadays.

Yeah, there's always people who take things too far, but he "got it" once reality was presented to him. Off the top of my head, I can only think of one time an Internet rivalry, with no other outside connections, resulted in notable violence. It was some Korean MMO player killing somebody.

Out of all the people on the Internet attacking each other on a constant basis, like infinity per day, nearly all the actual situations where real person to person harm was brought into the real world was due to romantic obsession.

The problem is there is still a cost to, in this case, proffered violence. What right did he have to make my wife basically live in fear for two years? Simply because he got it when confronted still left a psychic scar with me and my wife. Who is to say this doesn't occur thousands of times a day, except, instead of an adult male ready to take action it happens to a 14 year old girl still not sure of her self and overwhelmed by the threat of violence so she acquiesces to the psychos demands?

I agree that domestic violence is still far and away the single largest culprit for violence but this new area of violence around internet interactions is a growing and I believe silent area of crime.

Someone said it earlier, there is a sizable group of humanity that simply can not differentiate between reality and these fantasy worlds that are being created every day. They become so deeply mired in these power fantasies that nothing is off the table. Access to these fantasies created by online venues are still relatively new in regards to tracking of crimes originating from them. I would say that when numbers do get tracked they will be very close to what is seen within statistical populations.

Well this should make for interesting Twitch monitoring. No Star Marine, No AC, just the PU put to a tougher test.

Once again, Paul Jones gives a brief glimpse into the whipped dog culture for artists toiling under Chris in desperate hopes of find his approval and avoiding his wroth. Chris himself doesn’t have the talent to take his illformed ideas from puffy cloud concept to finished piece; he can’t even precisely articulate exactly what it is he’s wanting for New Ship #132... He is hooked on the power trip of being presented many options and rejecting most or all so more time/money can be wasted in the effort of finding his favor. And then when it finally does get his approval, inevitably a lot of the work gets shown to backers who point out obvious flaws like “hey but why is the cockpit view so terrible?” and the stage is set for the redesign work to come.

It hasn’t begun production of course but it’s more than ready to sell...

Paul Jones is excited about the sizzle reel opportunities this new starter ship presents...

Lando excitedly details the extent to which their entire asset-centric, mechanic-deficient development priorities are backasswardly whacked.

It's more that 'threatening people over the internet' is considered of a much less significance that 'threatening people in person', even if the attacker is using the internet in person next to the victim. It's something that it's taken a while to get traction on because almost everyone _knows_ that you don't threaten to kill people without being considered a loving idiot. Unfortunately law enforcement is taking a while to catch up with the concept of the 'threat' _always_ being real and being all zero-tolerance on aforementioned loving idiots.

Same for the people that threaten any direct action against a person physically without a loving good contract in place and preferably a promoter.

I'll disagree with the idea that some people cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality; we've had a good number of years of research that simply poo poo all over that because it was the central tenet of 'Violent games cause violence'.

What we _do_ have is a bunch of second and third wave dark triad out there linking arms and generally being awful; There's also a bunch of other people along for the fun that aren't dark triad, but they'll enable the gently caress out of them for short term gain. The problem (as I see it, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink, mine included) is more that we've anonymised the voice from the person and levelled the playing field to stop those nudges away from being a shitlord that tend to happen in meatspace.

XK posted:

Yeah, he isn't though, it spilled into the physical world. When you have someone threatening you or harrassing you in real life it takes on a whole different level of real which frankly blows.

Threats of violence are never okay. As it pertains to Internet threats versus real life, in my 25 years of dealing with poo poo flinging on the Internet, I never felt as threatened online as I did by random assholes I happened across in real life.

I got shot at by a guy because I didn't let him hang out at my house during the school day. He thought it was funny. Later, he robbed my house.

There's always going to be lovely people. I'd rather have them be someone text yelling at me in a game. People have always been terrible to each other, it doesn't require online gaming for them to be awful.

Dude, I have had actual fistfights with strangers over stupid video game stuff, have seen multiple people quit their job or get fired over doxxing, had a friend break and enter the house of his online crush (to fill it with balloons... she didn't know he existed) but I've never, ever, seen someone put blue cheese on their tacos.

Like, I play Japanese freemium games (because i suck) and they don't have any way to chat or contact other players. I'll let you guess why things ended that way.
