Skwirl posted:If she's being played by an actual preteen I think they'll avoid overly sexualizing her. What tv shows do now is cast an older, sexier, actress and have some sort of aging ray and hopes everyone forgets that the character is still supposed to be an actual 12 year old (Hi Gotham). For live action stuff the "literally born yesterday, but has the body of a 24 year old" trope (fifth element, 50 first dates) is way more common than 9000 year old demon with the body of a twelve year old, although still creepy for similar reasons. Leeloo is thousands of years old, she’s just not familiar with Earth culture. And we must have seen a very different 50 First Dates.

They're talking about the character's childlike qualities, whimsy, need of guidance/protection. All male fantasy bullshit which come from/lead to an attraction to inexperience or youth. Basically coded gross poo poo in the guise of something more benign.

Alright, I blew up the pics and the make up and wig isn't as bad as I thought but that dress/fur coat combo has to go. Anna is legit gorgeous, and they got her out there looking like a Law and Order hooker.

Terrible people really are pissed off that they made Starfire and Domino black. I've seen some pretty great meltdowns. I'm really happy that Rob Liefeld came out and said that comic Domino has always been black.

I'm liking those meltdowns even more now than I have in the past to see those racist attitudes having no purchase in the mainstream in light of what Black Panther has done. Now It's all enjoyment and no guilt for me, let the tears flow!

Like, the internet wasn't what is was now when MCD was cast as the Kingpin, we had no social media so we couldn't see people flip their racist poo poo out but you still heard some people bitching. When they cast Candice Patton as Iris here was a bit of a murmur but since she was barely a blip in comics there wasn't as much. But Starfire is hugely known from TTG ad holy poo poo has this been hilarious to watch.

Honestly it would've been funnier if they made Raven black because she's the one with the weirdest fans and they would've exploded.

Production isn't handing out fur coats as courtesy between shots. And it being fake fur is irrelevant, in case someone thinks that would be a point. But considering the entire get up looks like a stereotypical 80s hooker, the simplest explanation is that it was an intentional design choice. I'm hoping it is just part of a gag or joke at Starfire's expense (maybe poking fun at her earlier designs) but whatever. WB has been at this long enough to know they could have gotten ahead of this by releasing some official character shots, but as with most of their DC stuff, they don't really seem to care. Finally got around to seeing the Legends finale. It was pretty great. The season ended much stronger than it started. Looking forward to the next season. I think my big issue with the first few episodes this season was that it appears they knew they wanted to turn the show into full comedy, but didn't bother trying to actually transition the show properly in that direction. So suddenly characters were being put in "lol RANDOM" scenes and it was jarring for me (and they didn't make any sense in general). But they did eventually hit a stride and the comedy became much more natural. I am glad they found a way to embrace the badness of the team without making things so stupid I couldn't keep watching. The team ends up endearingly bad, instead of just unwatchably bad.

Yeah unfortunately, there is plenty of info out there about beauty standards and where black women fall within them. The most depressing of which was the study where very young black children preferred white dolls over black dolls because they were "prettier".

The predictable racist backlash is awful, but Starfire really does look loving terrible in those pics for reasons having nothing to do with Anna Diop or her race, and I can only hope she's supposed to be badly dressed there. The wig, makeup, and dress all make her look like a particularly bad drag queen. As ToastyPotato says above, the smart move would have been to get out in front of the set pics with more official costume shots, but I guess they just don't care enough. Which I suppose is fair, not like it'll matter too much by the time the show premieres. Barry Convex fucked around with this message at 22:02 on Apr 12, 2018 |

I talked about my experiences with this and my sister in the Misogynoir thread. It's really hosed up. There's other factors, like colorism, hair etc. It's a really layered problem that just goes back to how white people were able to define our society's beauty standards and how badly it's hosed everyone up. Like you might hear someone say "I don't date black girls" and think it's a preference, but really it's internalized racism. because think about it.. You really don't find any black women attractive? Africa is huge and it's people are varied. When you throw black Americans into the mix, the pool gets even wider. We don't all look alike. If you general 'you' can't find any of these women attractive, examine your drat biases.

I don't mean to get all after school psa but I can't understand the disconnect between loving comic books and cartoons about heroes who set out to do the right thing and then getting on the internet to be racist or bully people. Like did you totally miss the entire point? "It's so great the way these characters are helping people, welp time to go hurt some feelings"
