John Charity Spring posted:Is it good? It seems alright. My main impression is that fortified town attacks are much harder than in Warhammer. Siege towers can only be used once, and boiling oil equipped gates kill half of any infantry that try walking through them.

Fangz posted:I played a bunch of Thrones of Britannia, ask me anything Can troops attack walls with ladders as standard (like warhammer) or do you need to build ladders for certain units to carry in the campaign map (like previous historical titles)? Do factions get proper navies and what are they like?

Boiling oil in total war games is always incredibly overpowered

Genghis Cohen posted:Can troops attack walls with ladders as standard (like warhammer) or do you need to build ladders for certain units to carry in the campaign map (like previous historical titles)? You have to build siege stuff to get on to walls. I couldn't climb them. quote:Do factions get proper navies and what are they like? There's longboats and stuff. I didn't do a lot of naval combat. It felt less tedious than Attila but I dunno, I never got very far with it.

Boiling oil is at 200C, water is below 100C. One is a lot nastier.

Also they did use boiling water in medieval sieges, it's just that oil has that special touch.

How did the AI handle the campaign map changes? Did you have to constantly deal with the AI sniping undefended villages?

Yeah, oil gets much hotter and sticks instead of bouncing off, which is especially important if the enemy wears armor. The heat doesn’t work immediately, it needs time to pass through clothing and armor.

Fangz posted:You have to build siege stuff to get on to walls. I couldn't climb them. Thanks. Shame you can’t launch a daring escalade immediately, I think that’s a pretty cool way of representing attacking a town in an era that mostly lacked sophisticated siege equipment. I’m still definitely playing as sea vikings though.

Also I imagine the smell of crispy-fried Bob is super demoralizing to an attacker. Plus it's all slick and makes it harder to keep your footing while making your way up.

Have there been significant changes to the battle maps? While fidelity has been getting better with each game it still feels a bit cut and dry most of the time so more often than not battlefields look like abstractions of real terrain rather than genuine areas where battles would be fought.

Burning Oil made siege defense even more trivially easy in ME2:TW's expansions. You could just put your dudes in the interior of the gateway and the oil would burn 90% of the attackers.

It’s insane that gates just got infinite boiling oil and could dump a full cauldron every 15 seconds Maybe balance it to pour much less frequently and only if the top of the gate is manned. Or have a limited number of pours that you activate on command, like a dwarven gyrocopter’s bombs.

Billzasilver posted:It’s insane that gates just got infinite boiling oil and could dump a full cauldron every 15 seconds I think the best compromise would be being able to pour the oil manually with a decent cooldown.

An important question for Thrones of Britannia: can I light everything on fire again? Watching everything burn was my favorite part of Atilla, even if it did murder my computer and didn't really add any tactical advantage.

There was a lot of stuff being lit on fire, yes. Most viking units (well, the ones with axes) automatically set buildings on fire around them.

I had such a lot of fun with the agents in Shogun 2, its a shame that none of them since then have been fun.

I liked the rock paper scissors aspect of agents in Attila but once you got a high level agent operating in your lands it's almost impossible to get rid of him. Agents in Warhammer are fun because they also fight in battle. The minotaur agents for beastmen are hilarious.

I wish agents would just go away. That way I don't have to get a mod every new game getting rid of them.

Is there a Shogun mod to make the agents behave like Warhammer heroes? Would really like to have an oversized magic ninja or foreign veteran laying waste to the enemy battle lines
