I'm a bit confused as to what Proteus Jones's usual typing position is, because my normal typing position has my fingers on the home row and my thumb in the middle of the space bar, so regardless of how I want to hit it it's a pretty serious movement or contortion to reach the alt key. Compare with the ctrl key which is just a slight rotation of the hand to get the pinky down there.

How can you even comfortably crouch jump without using Control and Space? -e- Oh, Alt... Remember keeping a button pressed in a game just to have Windows interrupt to tell you about sticky keys? Lurking Haro has a new favorite as of 13:31 on Apr 13, 2018 |

This tangent makes me remember that I use right Control/Alt/Shift/Windows keys so rarely they might as well not exist.

I guess it's not far from the Windows key, which is the Windows way of starting a program, though, so not that big of a deal. Compare with the ctrl key which is just a slight rotation of the hand to get the pinky down there. Huh. On my Mac, I hit the ⌘ (ALT is in the same location on Windows keyboards) with my thumb and cross my index over the thumb to hit space. My hands don't move from the typing position and it's no harder than snapping your fingers in terms of the dexterity required. I actually had to do it just now to figure it out since it's mostly an automatic thing for me now. Like this: For CTRL I have to actually lift my hands, but I rarely use that unless I'm either using RDP to some Win boxes or using a Windows VM. It is much more of a pain, and I always forget and use the wrong combo. Honestly, for Win keyboards I feel CTRL and ALT need to be swapped considering how often CTRL combos are used while typing. Both thumbs on space bar normally. Curl one slightly to reach the Cmd key, other stays on space. Use pinky for control.

Typing chat: Both I and my ex learned to type on early-80s word processors/late typewriters, which led to me having a very efficient hunt-'n'-peck style, I get about 40wpm hammering away with four fingers and looking at the keyboard. But my ex, goddamn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQI4Jtc0vak That's just short of 130wpm, 99.5% accurate (his personal record is 128). He's somewhat slower on modern squishy/short-travel keyboards, of course, but it's hard to find Ms these days and then you have the get a USB adapter ... so once the last M and desktop died (The keyboard from an overdose of Coke, the computer because it let the smoke out of the PSU after a thunderstorm-induced power outage*) and we switched to modern lappys, we gave up on good keyboards. *I love my current laptop, it's a fairly recent gaming rig, only ever used plugged in -- I travel a lot for work, but it's always on a desk and plugged into the wall, so it's basically a desktop with a built-in UPS.

Cherry Greens are pretty similar in equivalency to the buckling spring of a Model M, at least as far as modern switches go. I have a CM Quickfire Rapid with greens and it is heaven to type on.

I use Command+Space all the time on my Mac, it has never felt awkward to me. No more awkward than hitting any other key combo, one nipple on the first and both thumbs on the other key. I also learned Alt+Space in Windows decades ago as a way to relocate lost windows. Alt+Space, M, hit an arrow key (otherwise the mouse won’t lock) and then move the mouse. There’s your Photoshop palette or whatever. That problem was so common among my friends that I wrote a tiny Delphi program that grabbed any out of bounds windows. Interestingly that often revealed all sorts of adware IE windows and poo poo which was a scary bonus at the time. SLOSifl has a new favorite as of 02:10 on Apr 14, 2018 |

As soon as it came out, when I was in college, I had to carry around an after-market mouse. The only nice thing was that, with two USB inputs on the keyboard, you could use the puck mouse as a left handed mouse and a Kensington as the right one. That may seem weird, but I used to work with a left handed guy so we could switch back and forth really fast without fussing with cables. For some reason, he liked the puck. I blame his Vietnam experience. Or possibly that he was a Criminal Justice professor. They're fussy.

If I were a lefty, I would probably just leave it on the right (I can mouse fine with my left hand as a righty, so I figure the inverse would be true). On the topic of puck mice, I never really cared about them one way or the other. I could use them fine with a delicate thumb and pinky grip I never had to think about. One thing that was great with them was how well you could feel the ball movement when they were just a little dirty.

I honestly thought these were out of production, but a look on Amazon shows they're still around, but I'm not sure if it's just old stock and/or generic versions of the principle: Wi-Fi SD Cards. They were a pretty popular thing about maybe 8-10 years ago, I think, mostly for portable devices and what not that still used SD cards, but since so much stuff has moved onto microSD or smartphones having built-in networking/BT/cloud/etc. support I don't think I've seen them around in stores in the last few years.
