Please help to make some noise about this, any way you can (Twitter, Facebook, whatever): A player on Jiangsu Suning FC, one of the biggest soccer teams in china, has disappeared in Xinjiang and appears to have been detained for "re-education": https://www.rfa.org/english/news/uyghur/footballer-04132018162312.html

actual belief is less important than just saying the right things so re-education is likely a mix of bribes and threats against him and his family

it would be great if more people realized that the main source of china's power is the "by 2020" narrative and if you get rid of that it becomes just another lovely authoritarian country i have seen more people realizing this since 2015 and some since xi declared himself dictator for life but its still extremely prevalent this dude puts it pretty well actually http://stanfordpress.typepad.com/blog/2015/03/chinas-rise-is-over.html quote:I often find myself amazed, when teaching, to realize that almost all of the undergraduates in my courses have only known a world in which “the rise of China” is an axiomatic reality. Bill Overholt, now of Harvard University, popularized the phrase with his prophetic book of that title in 1993. By the late 1990s, the rise of China was firmly anchored in the minds of people worldwide as the key to unlock all the complexity of the People’s Republic, the inescapable megatrend that could help us interpret, understand, and predict everything of importance in China, and eventually the world. Blistex posted:There needs to be a purge in the west of people who support alternative medicine. In 10 years I can see the Cansdian government giving TCM practitioners the same recognized status and legitimacy they have to chiropractors. Really, out of everything that bugged me on a regular basis in China, it was the group-think about insane TCM ideas and the "advice" that came with it. When someone tells you that the eyes are directly connected to liver, and that's why air pollution and crying are bad for the liver, giving you disease, then there comes a point where you can no longer speak because it's useless. They don't want to know, they don't care. "I heard that" or "they say that" is their evidence and you can rightly shut up because "you are not a doctor." It was sad and funny to see how much disbelief and upset people would have telling them that antibiotics will not cure their fever and flu. Like, who can actually know what an antibiotic is used for? That's mysterious information. Doctors and pharmacists with fake degrees wouldn't just give you an antibiotic for no reason! Warbadger posted:It's tempting to just copy & paste the active ingredient list with the common names in parenthesis (THIS IS TYLENOL) and see what happens. "That's because the antihistamines in it." "Everyone's always getting sick there, way more than anywhere I've ever lived an.." "You're racist!!!" There's like 2-3 in the entire country last time I was there, and Taco Bell is honestly one of the only fast foods that I am 100% okay with eating when I am in the mood. If I could get a 7-layer Burrito a couple times a month, I think I would have been more stoked on life.

Breaking TCM News! My wife never brings this kind of stuff up because she is embarrassed, but since we have a little guy (8 months now) she did a little, "Why are Chinese people so stupid?" rant. Apparently a new mother was forced to do the "sitting the month" and was confined to her room. The weather was consistently above 30°c, all of the doors and windows were sealed shut, no fans or AC were allowed, and she was made to wear insulated pyjamas and lay in a bed with heavy winter covers on it. As you can guess she was happy to get through that ordeal, but understood that it was for the best, and that she and her new baby's health benefited greatly from her mother's care and wisdom. Just kidding. The mom died of organ failure brought on by dehydration and extreme overheating.
