Not a fan of all the tacky chrome, especially on black - reminds me of your average lovely Harley - but that's easy to fix with Plastidip nowadays. Cool besides that.
No way it's worth $50k, though, even if it were brand new 0 miles.

God drat, everything about that screams aftermarket chrome bullshit, but a lil' google image search later and I still can't believe it's all legit oem product... How much coke did VW do off the hood of that thing before they decided to go that route?

Funny you say that because they apparently were close to $50k new

But, these 500 limited models were expensive – some 42,000 DM in 1991 equates to about $46,000 in today’s money.

$46,000 for a lifted Golf with 90 horsepower.

Yeah, trying to do the basic math on this. Ran a generic "used value" type stuff on KBB and the check cut from the insurance for the value even on the low end wouldn't have been bad.

Perhaps he doubled downed and bought it back thinking he could do better...yet he won't part it out.

Dunno. Over financed and rolled over a few loans...several meters underwater...bet you are right. Yet doesn't explain not parting it out.

It wouldn't be a clean title then.

I think it's a really good donor for a restomod project. There is a powerful powertrain right out of the box, plus the brakes, seats, dashboard that could be re-fitted. This car has a lot to offer to someone. Not sure what the right price would be, but people who pay for crate engines may find this to be a decent deal.

Probably rolled it while drunk/high/stupid, didn't tell insurance, got a buddy with a tow truck to tow it back to wherever. Decides to sell because taking it to a body shop would be too expensive and a car in such a state might cause questions to be asked...

That car has clearly been rolled over in a field somewhere. Wouldn't that cause at least some damage to the transmission/engine? Even if it runs as the seller claims I'd be worried about unseen damage from getting tossed around.

Engine damage from oil starvation? Or do new cars now shut off the engine automatically when they're upside down?

I guess motor/tranny mounts might not be in a happy place, but you might replace those anyway if restomodding.

I guess it's possible but I don't think so. I've never heard of a G sensor to cause a car to not start. Though that would be a fun one to diagnose. :v:

Might vary from state to state...but had a car that was "totaled" and bought it back from insurance company (State Farm). Title never changed hands and hence no "salvage" on the title.

Granted, what was a total loss and was merely a few dents.
