To be completely fair Battleborn was an attempt to bring mechanics from a top-down genre into an FPS game like Borderlands did. The problem is they didn't realise that MOBAs were tapped out in general unlike loot games which went a surprisingly long time where there just wasn't that many. I mean we used to call it diablo-style loot until just a couple years ago. They also forgot to steal their entire art direction from something unique and outside of video games so it didn't look so generic and uninspired. It'll be interesting to see how Borlderlands 3 goes after people have played other loot-driven shooters.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified needs to let me drop a loving hard save while back at base. Or just in general. Relying on autosaves is a terrible idea when the game doesn't autosave religiously. I lost nearly 20 minutes of doing stuff between missions because I tried to do a bunch of errands all over the base before stopping for the night. So now when I go back to it tomorrow I have to redo all that stuff again before I can continue on as planned.

Relying on poorly implemented auto-saves is a great way to piss off and burn out your player base as they lose progress because they haven't hit and arbitrary save point in a half hour. The auto-save implementation in Ubisoft games is one of my favorite implementations, though. Those games save after almost every action pretty much invisibly to the player, besides the save icon popping up in a corner of the HUD. One of my favorite indie games, In Celebration of Violence, has the worst save system I've seen. You can only save and quit after defeating a boss. The levels can take up to an hour to completely clear. In the levels, you can find black keys to get you into a bonus dungeon after the boss fight, but you can't save and quit and still hit that bonus dungeon, because saving and quitting puts you at the start of the next level when you continue your game. Also, you can only save and quit; you can't save your progress and continue playing. There is no auto-save on quit, either, so if you do need to quit in the middle of a level, you lose your character, progress, and need to restart the game. Motherfucker, I have a kid on the way, I'm not going to have time to commit an uninterrupted hour of game time with a penalty for saving and quitting to take care of her. It's a shame, too, because the rest of the game clicked with me more than almost any other game I've played. I wouldn't recommend it to everybody, but the gameplay just feels right to me, and it's still one of the few real-time roguelikes that feels like a roguelike.

Underrail imagine fallout 1 except every enemy is a deathclaw and every one of those deathclaws has a mingun and laser eyes and is also invisible. also the player character is a piece of toilet paper. There i've just summed up how irritating the combat system is,i do like what this game does in many respects but it also does poo poo worse than a 21 year old game and i just can't figure why they developed it that way. The first half of the game you'll be walking through grey caves and getting insta-killed by every single enemy you come across even if you stick to the path you're supposed to be on,it's a terrible start to the game because it's boring,confusing and ugly. But now that i've been playing it for like 30 hours some of the environments are actually really gorgeous and all that's changed is better lighting and some simple changes of wall textures and environmental stuff,it's such a small thing,why wouldn't you open with this stuff instead of the drab poo poo you get at the beginning? bizarre.

Picked up Icewind Dale recently, and while there are a lot of things dragging it down that are just a product of its time, the most baffling one is this: The presence of the STORE and RECALL buttons seem to acknowledge that they know I'm going to mash REROLL until I get high stats, but somehow never considered how incredibly dull that is. Possibly it's supposed to work as a kind of anti-skinner box where you question your life choices more and more with each push of the button.

I’m playing the third Walking Dead game. The main recurring character is a girl who, in the first game is 8(?), the next like 10, and this one 12/13 ( just guesstimates but should be about right). Anyways now they show her walking swinging her hips like crazy. I’ve NEVER seen a woman walk like that unless they’re trying to get attention or something like at a bar, and a 12 year old a) wouldn’t walk like that and b) wouldn’t have hips big enough to do that. A few minutes later she’s standing with her hand on her magically giant hip in an exaggerated manner; again, I haven’t seen anyone do this; hell, I put my hand on my waist and maybe lean a little because putting my hand on my hip is not comfortable, and I don’t swing my hip all the way out while doing this. Maybe this is an oversight cause they were dumb and don’t know how people walk, or they just used stock 3D models with stock animations that they then put her texture over and I would assume those would be sexualized because Video Games; but, no matter the reason, it bothers me. E: 2 seconds after I post this in a new scene an adult lady walks by with a normal gait and put her hand on her waist like I was describing how I was doing it so yeah there’s no reason for them to have the 12 year old to be standing and walking like that. I’ve posted about this before but I think a whole lot of it is randy pitchford giving them an absolutely awful image. I have talked to some very cool gearbox people irl, and he represents them terribly. This is not to say their games are high quality, but a lot of the accusations at gearbox are 100% fabricated such as “battleborn was intended to shamelessly rip off overwatch.” And then you see what randy is posting on twitter and you almost want to join in. I suspect a lot of the company wishes he would stay off of social media.

That said, grenades and molotovs are useful as gently caress, so get your throwing stat up and any relevant perks early. Learn how to make the best grenades, and always keep what you need to make them on you. You can solve a lot of problems by chucking fire bombs everywhere. The problem that ruins the game for me, and I've probably posted about this before, is the final area of the game. It's a point of no return that you can quite easily find yourself in by accident. There's no merchants anywhere, and any resources you do find are extremely limited. The enemies are dangerous as hell and respawn. I've played through this game twice up to this point and quit, because it stops being fun the second you run out of anything. The whole min max deal means you're character is probably very good at one thing, and if you can't do that one thing, you're hosed.

Underrail is really cool with some loving idiotic design decisions. You can't run because the dev wanted you to walk everywhere to emphasise the oppressive metro atmosphere. I lucked into a good build and found the combat really really fun, more than any other single character turn based game I can think of, but I can imagine it being a drag if your build sucks.

I had to restart Underrail about 6 times before I found a build that felt good. I went no crafting, unarmed/stealth/psychic and pretty much tore through everything with very few exceptions. Crafting is handy, but it's a huge investment of skill points. The thing that really dragged the game down for me is the lack of map, the end game area especially is an enormous maze. I ended up making a crappy map in paint to try and keep track of it all, which was kind of rewarding on the one hand and a tremendous pain the rear end in another.

I'm a sucker for any media that takes an abrupt and overwhelming turn completely nixing the entire story. One of my favorite pet ideas is a movie in which the heroic lawyer, walking from the parking garage to the courthouse for the final legal showdown, gets smacked by a bus, and the movie ends on a shot of his case breaking evidence flying gently down a sewer grate. I really, really wanted to like Underrail, but there are way too many little things bringing it down to make it enjoyable for me, all of which have been mentioned here. My main bit is that the difficulty isn't challenging enough to make fights a puzzle to solve, but so deadly thanks to the enemies having comparable stats as the PC, despite outnumbering the PC X-to-1, that every fight feels like bullshit.
