What matters is not the pocket WiFi but whether you have a spare usb battery charger because you won’t last a full day

CDJapan is what I use, it's good. I don't know if you can pick it up at Haneda but they'll mail it right to your hotel. Dropping off at the airport is easy.

I went with Genki Mobile due to a link peanut posted way further up the thread, it was really good:

orcane posted:

I had one from Genki Mobile (I think someone in this thread suggested that) and the battery lasted through a day traveling by rental car on Shikoku as well as by metro/trains in the Tokyo area, no problem. We had the cheapest rate, 3000 yen base fee + 300/day with 1 GB/day full speed and unlimited at 200 kbps.

It's actually possible to also rent an additional battery but I never would have needed one (or a spare USB battery charger)

I've only been here for a day and change but the one I got from Ninja WiFi (with the discount code snagged from here) seems to be working fine so far. Haven't needed to actually use a battery to recharge it yet either, but I'd suggest buying one and bringing it with you rather than renting it with the router as it seems far cheaper to do it that way.

I got one from japan-rail-pass.com which delivered to the airport (available 24h unlike most others) and never went below 60% battery despite having it on all day.

Having just got back I will endorse tmobile big time for internet. I paid $10 extra for the month for extra speed and it was no different than being back home except for streaming video, which wasn't a big deal. No sim swapping, no extra thing to haul and charge and pick up/drop off, etc.

By the way, huge shout out to google maps. Aside from super detailed maps for walking it did a nearly perfect job with public transportation navigation. It has routes, schedules, tells you how many stops to go and even how much to pay. Hyperdia was better for JR stuff but maps was the poo poo for day to day. Especially the feature that colors in...I don't know what you call it, areas with high concentrations of restaurants and bars and stores and stuff. Keeps you from accidentally wandering into mundane office/residential areas. Although, I did have a really good time walking through a mundane residential area in sugamo to visit an onsen where I was the only white person. So that was worth it.

Smart phones are bad and there’s nothing too special or magical about going to new places using saved DIGITAL MAPS and traveling is all about exploring things on your own!!!!! Especially sugamo where it has a rep of having all these shady sex shops and desperate Japanese language program dormitories. What matters in life is reading all sorts of weird books or brain food with alt right leanings that value common sense and hard work.

Actually the Kyushu country side is super pretty and fun and full of good food but you really need a local connection.

Yeah this worked for me too, completely fine and the only time we ran it out of power was the day in Kyoto we went out to the bamboo forest at 6am. My wife was watching netflix on the trains via it too and playing pogo. Significantly cheaper for us than the other options.

I used tmobile too, and it mostly worked, but there were periods where it'd seem connected, but nothing would load (and Google Maps wouldn't be able to route me anywhere) and then 5 minutes later it'd switch from Softbank to Docomo or something.

Hello. I am traveling to Japan for 7 nights. Possibly 8. I am planning to go to Osaka - Kyoto area. Also, I plan to do Tokyo for 1 day.

From Osaka-Kyoto, I'm interested in some of the nature spots/scenic areas from there, perhaps beach, perhaps mountain, perhaps countryside villages. Any suggestions around that area? I'm trying to find good resources and looking at Google Maps too but was hoping for recommendations.

Please also kindly to be informing me where can I pick up my anime waifu? I need to know all the good catgirl body pillow spots.

EDIT: I will get the Japan Guide and the Lonely Planet book

For 7 or 8 nights in Osaka/Kyoto, you can easily do 3 days in Kyoto, day trip to Nara, day trip to Himeji, day trip to goofing around Kobe, day trip going up to Arima Onsen or Mt Rokko, plus all of the stuff that's actually in Osaka. Another option is to go down to Hiroshima for a few days and work your way back up towards Osaka.

e: the trip to Tokyo is ~$100ish and 2h45m each way, the kansai 5 day pass is 13500円 and it's only 1h10m from Shin-Kobe to Hiroshima

e2: vvv i'm gonna eat at backyard bbq just to spite you tomorrow

e3: Go do the Shimanami Kaido bike ride. I somehow mixed up the whole scenic thing and got caught up on the single day in Tokyo.

I really liked the Iwatayama monkey park. It doesn't take too long to get to from central Kyoto, it's a 20 minute hike up the mountain so it wasn't jammed with tour groups, you get to see and feed monkeys of course, and it has a really great view of Kyoto. There's also the (overrated, overcrowded) Arashiyama bamboo grove and some shrine and garden which I didn't want to pay for. The free public kameyama park which is right there was nice though, great view at the top of the river snaking through the mountains.

Are you honestly going to buy and carry around a huge unwieldy body pillow and then somehow transport it halfway across the world to bring it home? That's insane to me.

I had that a few times too, but toggling airplane mode brought it back (if there was truly cell service there).

I researched maid cafes when I was planning my trip last year and decided they were just too otaku-y for me and my partner

Besides, a big part of the experience is supposed to be small-talking with the maids and you can't really do that if you don't speak Japanese

correction - all the main street electronics shops are full of Chinese tourists (this goes extra for Saturdays), but all the nerdy spots are full of American or European otaku. You won't hear much Mandarin in places like Trader or Super Potato, but you will see lots of white guys.

Ikebukero is basically Tokyo's Chinatown now. So don't go there if Mandarin makes your skin melt off your face or whatever it seems to do to some people.
