Throwaway account.

I live in the US.

I have a decent job, I can save a bit of money every month while still paying my bills, driving a decent vehicle, and have a fairly fun lifestyle.

With that said, I’m wondering if anyone has made the decision to forego renting to stockpile money for buying a house. In my perspective, I could get a Planet Fitness or Anytime Fitness membership so I can bathe and groom, and live out of my car for every month except December, January, and February. I could probably save almost 10k per year additional.

Has anyone tried this successfully?

This is probably less straight BWM and more IWM (Ignorant with-regards-to Money), but a guy in his early 30's came to HR yesterday afternoon to talk about problems with his taxes.

He was upset that his refund was much lower than he expected in TurboTax and thought that HR made an error on his W2.

His big problem was that there is a column for "Employer Contributions to Healthcare" that is $621 per pay x 26 pay periods for a total of $16,146 for the year.

He said that he contributed $573 to healthcare costs in 2017 and only spent $394 on healthcare for the year.

His refund was only about $1,000 (I didn't catch the exact amount, but it was around there) and the tax filing deadline was just a couple of days ago.

He was asking what paperwork he needed to file to amend his taxes to correct the error made by HR.

They looked through his information and it all looked right, but he kind of blew up and said that there is no way that it is correct.

By his math, he should be getting about $17,325 back on his taxes because his contribution ($573) and the employer contribution ($16,146) were not used since he only spent $394 on healthcare during the 2017 tax year.

Taxes product all types of drama. At my work the big drama is always taxes on commission being higher, because in the short run comp is taxed higher (considered a bonus), and then it balances out during tax season.

All year round co workers are constantly changing Fed withholdings to 0 right before a commission check so they get more back immediately. Now is the time of year when said people are also complaining about owing a good chunk of change back on their taxes.

Some stuff can be unexpected though. I recently won a contest for a Pixel 2 XL ($850 retail). About a month later, my check is suddenly $250-300ish less than expected. I forgot that the phone is treated as a “bonus” so it’s full comp tax on the $850. Thankfully I already sold the phone for more than that, but I’m sure there are people throwing a fit over it.

Give me a cash reward over a physical prize any day.

I just don't know how you get to your 30's thinking that your employer contribution to your health insurance comes back to you at the end of the year if you don't go to the doctor.

Even just using common sense, why would you think you were getting a $17k refund on a $45k salary.

Given it was a bonus contest from Google, and not my direct company, not happening. In general that’s one thing that they wouldn’t do anyway. Annoying, but not worth griping over. I sold the phone for $530, so essentially It was about a $250ish bonus after tax.

They’ve been moving away from physical prizes anyway, probably for this reason.

My (22F) future "mother-in-law"(50sF) is asking way too much from me

quote:

I have been dating my boyfriend for about 5 years now, so I guess you can say we are in a long term serious relationship that could possibly lead to marriage.

For the past year, my boyfriend's mother has been suggesting different things I should do to secure my future with her son. The first thing she did was suggest that I start a life insurance policy and add my boyfriend as a beneficiary. The agent came to their house and we had a 3 hour long discussion about the different policies and she was pushing me to go for the policy which would cost about $300/month. Although I have a decent paying job, I am in no position to pay that much every month for life insurance when I am only 22 years old. I filled out the application and provided my bank routing and account number for the initial deposit, but I decided not to go through with it right now.

After the whole life insurance policy discussion went away, she started suggesting my boyfriend and I get a safe deposit box together and put our income in there as savings. No way in hell would I do that, so I declined, but my boyfriend went ahead and opened the safe deposit box on his own and added his mother to it.

Now just recently, she has been pressuring us to buy plots in the cemetery as "security," saying that we can sell it in the future if we desperately need the money. She also said that open plots are hard to come by in this specific cemetery so we have to buy it now before it is all filled. Unbeknownst to me, they decided to go ahead and purchase the plots without my knowledge, each costing about $14,500 and we are contracted to 3 plots (one for me, one for my boyfriend, one for his mom). There is also an initial down payment of $5,000 and I would have to pay about $250/month for 60 months to pay off the plot for myself. This whole situation makes me INCREDIBLY upset because they went ahead and did this without my knowledge and I have to be stuck with a stupid piece of land I won't even utilize until I'm dead for who knows how long. The crazy thing is that I'm not even on the deed so if we break up, there's no guarantee I will get my money back. Although $250 a month won't be a huge hit for me, it still makes absolutely NO sense as to why I would need to throw away close to $15,000 when I could use that money towards my new car or down payment for a mortgage.

I expressed my displeasure with the whole situation to my boyfriend but he basically just brushed it off saying it'll be good for our future. Regardless of what happens, I still have to pay it monthly, but how can I prevent things like this from happening in the future when we get married? He comes from a really superstitious Chinese family and is a momma's boy, so he believes EVERYTHING his mom tells him, even if it makes absolutely no sense. Would it also be weird for me to have legal documents involved in regards to the cemetery plots and my payments? I am really close to his family and I am certain they won't do anything shady if push comes to shove, but I do need to my own security.

TL;DR: Boyfriend's mom is trying to make unnecessary financial decisions that has little to no benefits, but claiming it will secure our future. Now I am stuck paying $14,500 for a cemetery plot for the next 5 years and my name isn't even on the deed. How do I prevent similar things from happening in the future? Should I get legal papers involved for the plot?

It can be good to have life insurance to help cover your death. Beyond that yeah it is crazy. Also, gently caress whole life insurance, term life is much better. At 22, a $300 a month policy of term would be several million worth of coverage.

Hell, the 55+ age bracket is already going through that. It includes a lot of people who relied on a house as their retirement plan(and then 2008 happened), or who thought their kids would be their retirement plan(which doesn't work so well in the modern era when you only have 1-2 kids to spread out the burden instead of 5+), or who relied on pensions that are increasingly undermined or straight-up destroyed.

Doesn't matter how much you make. If your expenses = your income, you can't save.

And we're predisposed to inflating our expenses to match our income! I'm surprised the figure isn't 7 out of 10, honestly

I'm sure we all know a big income, big spender with little to show for it other than maybe a big house and nice car.
